Damon Lindelof’s ‘Star Wars’ Script Is Ready With Actors Attached, To Be Announced Soon

We started the week on a negative note regarding upcoming Star Wars films, with Variety and Deadline saying that projects from Patty Jenkins and Kevin Feige have been put on the back burner, so we might as well put a positive spin on the topic now. There’s nothing particularly new about this story, but we shall update those of our readers who might be behind on the latest Star Wars news, particularly when it comes to the project developed by Damon Lindelof that will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Lindelof pitched the idea to Lucasfilm in late 2021, and according to Jeff Sneider, who first reported the news back in March 2022, the project came in with the lead actor attached. After a quick look at Lindelof’s filmography, and adding in another hint that Sneider was given by sources — that the actor has successfully transitioned back and forth from TV and film in recent years — one can conclude that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a clear candidate for that position.

The filmmaker has been working on the script for over a year now, from the initial treatment to the actual scripting phase, which probably started during the summer, after Lucasfilm assembled a writers’ room that included, among others, Justin Britt-Gibson, who is co-writing the film with Lindelof; Dave Filoni apparently also popped by. A director was also hired — Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who holds two Oscars for Best Short Documentaries, and directed episodes 4 and 5 of Disney Plus and Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel series.

Speaking on the most recent episode of The Hot Mic With Jeff and John, Sneider weighed in on the topic once again, saying that the script is probably done at this point, and arguing that it is 100% going to be the December 2025 film and that it will be announced during next month’s Star Wars Celebration. In fact, we might add, Lucasfilm is probably casting the female lead role in the coming weeks, and possibly some of the supporting cast as well, so they can make a splash at the upcoming event, where the title and logo could also be revealed.

The reporter has also stated before that Kathleen Kennedy has a five-year film slate in place, but whether or not that will also be part of the presentation at Celebration, we don’t know. However, this is particularly interesting for a variety of reasons. Reading between the lines, we can clearly see that Lucasfilm is now focusing its efforts on telling a coherent story across its next few films. Kathleen Kennedy stated last year that their upcoming films would be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and The Hollywood Reporter echoed that last year, when they said that this was the case in the Lindelof-Obaid-Chinoy film, adding that characters from the sequel trilogy had high chances of appearing. Suspiciously enough, Daisy Ridley was very open on social media about taking meetings with Lucasfilm around that time; whether she will have a cameo in the first film (which is reportedly going to feature a new set of characters) or she will appear in future projects that are part of the aforementioned slate, we don’t know. But we wouldn’t be surprised to find out as much during the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel in London, on April 7.

Stay tuned for more on the upcoming Star Wars films!
