‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’ Reveals Details About Its Open World and Level Design; Obi-Wan Kenobi Skin Presented

Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming video game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, is barely more than two months away from release. As the game’s launch has drawn closer, we’ve learned more about the title’s combat, enemy design, and story, among other elements.

One aspect of Survivor that has attracted lots of conversation among fans of its 2019 predecessor, Jedi: Fallen Order, is its open world. As many sequels often do, Survivor is attempting to offer players an adventure with a larger scale than the previous game without losing sight of what made the original so much fun to play. To that end, Survivor is introducing the new planet of Koboh, among others. It will be presented in-game as a huge open world with required missions for the main story as well as plenty of optional content waiting to be found and experienced.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Cal faces the Raiders

IGN recently posted the latest video in their IGN First series, which has been covering Star Wars Jedi: Survivor throughout February. Their newest report replays some Koboh footage from the gameplay video we saw two weeks ago, and reminds us of some new features that we had already learned about before, like the sequel’s introduction of fast travel and rideable creatures.

However, it also presented lots of new information about what players can expect from Koboh. Apparently, the majority of the footage IGN has shown of the planet thus far is from an initial linear section that protagonist Cal Kestis will have to trek and fight through before the map becomes more open and explorable. Once it does, though, there won’t be any shortage of activities to enjoy.

These activities include optional boss fights, Jedi chamber puzzle rooms, enemy camps, and additional paths that Cal won’t be able to get to until he has the right upgrade (think of Metroid and Castlevania games). While the game doesn’t require that players complete these challenges, doing so will grant rewards, including additional skill points and new customization options for Cal.

Survivor won’t be entirely focused on open-world exploration, however. The game will also include more linear levels reminiscent of those in Fallen Order (which often felt wide and non-linear too). The video shows Cal traversing one of them, a mysterious moon base full of deadly enemies. Even in this level, Survivor continues to provide optional activities and areas to engage with, including new challenge rooms where Cal will have to fend off larger waves of enemies.

If you’re the kind of gamer who enjoys unlocking alternate skins for your characters, and want to see some of the outfits Cal can get in Survivor, you’re in luck. EA’s Star Wars Twitter page (hat tip comicbook.com) has provided a new look at the Obi-Wan Kenobi-themed, pre-order exclusive cosmetic pack that was announced for the game months ago. All in all, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor looks like it’s doing all it can to achieve what any great video game sequel should: give fans more of what worked from the first entry while introducing new features and design elements that provide an even better experience. We’ll find out how well Respawn realized their expanded vision for the Star Wars Jedi series when Survivor launches on April 28, 2023.
