Industrial Light and Magic Building New Production Studio in Mumbai

Industrial Light and Magic is expanding its horizons by announcing plans to open a new production studio in Mumbai, India.

The San Francisco-based film and television company Industrial Light and Magic already has four international production studios in Vancouver, Canada, London, United Kingdom, Sydney, Australia, and Singapore, but plans for a fifth to have just been revealed to Variety this morning. Kiran ‘KP’ Prasad, who previously worked at the Indian visual effects company DNEG as the Head of Studio of the Bangalore and Chennai division, will lead this new division of ILM. Prasad issued the following statement about the start of the new division:

“ILM has always been on the forefront of technological and creative innovation in the visual effects industry and there is no better time to start our studio in India than now, as the Indian VFX industry is poised for spectacular growth in the coming years. It is exciting and an honor to be part of the ILM team at such a key moment in the VFX industry with technological developments pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. I look forward to working with the executive team to set up the studio from the ground up, building a world-class facility and bringing the best of the diverse Indian talent together for an opportunity with endless possibilities.”

Like the other international divisions, these studios will work on visual effects and animation for a variety of film and television productions around the world. Industrial Light and Magic Senior Vice President and General Manager Janet Lewin, who Prasad will report to, issued the following statement about the next expansion for ILM:

“With five global studios consistently operating at capacity and continuing to grow, the time was right for ILM to expand once again to meet the industry’s increasing demand for high-caliber visual effects.”

What this means for Star Wars, at the present time, is uncertain, but at least two divisions opening have been tied to the development of new Star Wars projects before. Industrial Light and Magic Singapore, for instance, was important to the start of Lucasfilm Animation, with their work being instrumental for the development of The Clone Wars. ILM’s London office also opened shortly before principal photography on The Force Awakens wrapped, and subsequent Star Wars and other Lucasfilm productions that have filmed in the UK have taken advantage of their resources. It’s not clear if this means that we’ll see Star Wars movies or projects made or developed in India, but in any case, ILM will continue to lead the way in visual effects development and completion for movies around the world.
