Damon Lindelof ‘Star Wars’ Movie Reportedly Taking December 2025 Slot; Status of Taika Waititi Movie Unclear

More news on the Damon Lindelof-written Star Wars movie has come into focus from Jeff Sneider, who was the first to report that Lindelof was developing a Star Wars movie.

About 19 minutes into his podcast The Hot Mic, the conversation towards Star Wars and specifically the recent news about Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy being hired to direct the movie scripted by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. While Star Wars movies as of late have entered periods of development hell while Lucasfilm paves a cinematic future not solely dependent on the Skywalker Family, Sneider explained that he was confident this film will be the next one in theaters:

“I do think it’s gonna happen. In fact, I think it actually has a release date! I’m like, ‘Wait, I have to keep track of what I’m allowed to say!’ [laughs] I think it’s gonna come out December [19] 2025… I’ve been saying that since I reported it. So I broke that story in March… About [Damon Lindelof], you know, followed it up this Summer saying that he’d been seen on the lot, doing that kind of stuff. I didn’t realize, what I had originally reported, it was unclear whether this guy was going to be writing the script or leading a writer’s room. I knew he was working on something up there, right? So it turns out he was leading a writer’s room… In the end, [Justin Britt-Gibson] is going to be co-writing with Damon, and yeah, they have the director from Ms. Marvel [Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy]. I think that’s an interesting package, I think that we’ll see it Christmas 2025.”

When asked about new details in the report, namely that the film was set after The Rise of Skywalker and characters from the sequel trilogy could appear, Sneider said that there aren’t any specific names floating around:

“I have no idea which characters from that trilogy you might see. I hope that they keep that to a minimum, I think I wanna see ‘new’; that trilogy was that trilogy.”

On the subject of another Star Wars film that was actually officially announced by Lucasfilm, Sneider explained that the Taika Waititi film is further off than some might expect, but the film from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Damon Lindelof, and Justin Brett-Gibson is moving forward quickly enough that it will likely be the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker:

“This is the date that [Taika Waititi] has right now. Taika’s Star Wars is December 19, 2025, but as I think fans may be able to read between the lines of what’s been reported… Yeah, I don’t know if he’s really there yet. So I think that Damon’s movie will inherit that date.”
