Tony Gilroy Confirms ‘Andor’ Season 2 Will Shoot Through August for a 2024 Release

With the first season of Andor closing in on its Disney Plus debut, the second and final season of the Star Wars series will start filming in November. In a recent interview with The Wrap, showrunner Tony Gilroy said their plan is to be filming until August of 2023, meaning the second season will likely arrive in 2024.

Gilroy was first asked about his involvement with the Star Wars franchise and whether he will stick around after Andor. He said:

“As suspect as my involvement in the community is, by the time I’m done, I’ll have had my hands on 26 hours of Star Wars content. I will be a player by the time we finish. This is me sticking around right now. I think that’s the headline.”

The Oscar-nominated writer/director then followed up that comment with this little insight into the schedule for the second season:

“I have two more years to go. We start shooting in November on Part 2. And I don’t know if … Our past pattern was two years, but I mean, I’ll be on … We’ll shoot from November to August. And then our post[-production] last time was about a year.”

Season 2, or Part 2 as Gilroy calls it, will mirror the schedule for season 1 to a tee — Part 1 started rolling in late November 2020 and wrapped in August 2021, targeting a late summer 2022 release (it was initially scheduled for August 31 and then moved to September 21). From all accounts, it seems like it will be the same for the second season, which will see the return of at least Diego Luna, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, and Adria Arjona.

Additionally, this also gives us some insight into the schedule for Star Wars content over the next couple of years, at least as far as live-action goes. Andor will wrap 2022 for us, which already saw the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett (technically a 2021 release, but in practice, it was 2022 as the first episode came out on December 29, 2021). In 2023, we are getting The Mandalorian in February (though that date was not reiterated during D23, which might mean that we could get it a bit later), Ahsoka (probably during the summer), and Skeleton Crew (probably in the fall). These last two series are still in production in Los Angeles. And lastly, in 2024 we know we’re getting Andor season 2 and The Acolyte. In addition, Jon Favreau confirmed in an interview during Star Wars Celebration that he was writing season 4 of The Mandalorian at the time, which could point to a 2023 shoot and a 2024 release. That would also leave us with a blank canvas for 2025 and beyond.

Andor will start streaming on September 21 with a three-episode premiere. Stay tuned for our weekly written reviews on Star Wars News Net and look forward to the return of TRB Live on Wednesday nights, where the crew from The Resistance Broadcast will recap the latest episode.
