Giancarlo Esposito Wants to Appear as Moff Gideon in Massive’s ‘Star Wars’ Video Game

Speaking at a Q&A at Fan Expo Canada 2022, Giancarlo Esposito joked that he wanted to reprise his role as Moff Gideon for Massive’s upcoming Star Wars video game — this was spotted by r/StarWarsLeaks first.

The writer of Massive’s Star Wars game, named Navid Khavari, has already worked with Esposito on Far Cry 6 (another game under the Ubisoft umbrella, the publisher that owns Massive), in which he played the villain. It seems the two of them enjoyed working together if Esposito does indeed have his number.

If Moff Gideon was to appear in the story, it would hint at the time period Massive’s Star Wars game is set in. If Moff Gideon is part of the story, then it should be set around the time of the original trilogy. We’ve only ever met Moff Gideon after the events of Return of the Jedi, but the story could allow fans to meet him earlier in his life, during the original trilogy or in the early days of the Empire.

We don’t know much else about the game aside from Ubisoft’s statement on the initial announcement, but we do know that it’s supposed to be an open-world action game, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to those familiar with Ubisoft’s gaming portfolio and Massive’s previous efforts, which include two Division video games and the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, all of which are open-world titles.

Giancarlo Esposito also spoke more about Moff Gideon, talking about “wardens” who were created and assigned geographic sectors to watch over across the galaxy. According to him, Gideon realized he was stronger than all the other wardens and started planning to make them listen to him, seemingly with the objective of governing them all himself. Esposito then spoke about Gideon becoming “drunk with power”, though it’s not clear if this is part of Moff Gideon’s backstory or something that will happen in future The Mandalorian storylines. More Moff Gideon is always a good thing, no matter what stage of his life we meet him. Hopefully, we can begin to see him in other Star Wars media outside of The Mandalorian.

This article has been edited, as Giancarlo Esposito only said that he would ring Navid Khavari, not that the writer had already asked him to appear in the game. We apologize for the mistake and getting some fans’ hopes up for a Moff Gideon appearance in the game (even though it could pan out in the future).
