‘Andor’ Production Design Highlighted in New National Geographic Featurette

A new, 90-second featurette from National Geographic Travel has been released, focusing on the work that Andor production designer Luke Hull did on the series.

Gilroy had mentioned before the production designer was one of the first people he hired when he started working on the scripts for Andor, and Hull’s work on Chernobyl was what sold him on the name. Check out the new featurette here:

In the video, showrunner Tony Gilroy says:

“To make a really proper Star Wars show, the quality of design has to be perfect.”

Hull explains his process as follows:

“As the production designer for Andor, we were very keen to build worlds that felt like they went beyond just the set. The story is quite gritty, so we used a lot of locations that were relevant. [Gilroy: Luke found this massive dam in Scotland] which literally looks like Darth Vader’s mask. And then Ferrix is a trading post town. It’s one huge set, and we were referencing 1920s Amsterdam. And then with Coruscant being this planet of cities, it was natural to kind of gravitate to a more Brutalist style of architecture. It’s about scale and empire and monochromatic fascism… My main goal was to trick people into thinking that they are watching something that could be set in the real world and then remind them that it’s Star Wars.”

Star Diego Luna then praised Hull’s work:

“The work Luke has done is spectacular. It’s so meticulous, with so much care.”

New episodes of Andor debut on Disney Plus every Wednesday. You can check out our written review of the fourth episode here, and watch The Resistance Broadcast’s live discussion here.
