‘Andor’ New Image Reveals Kathryn Hunter’s Character, Kyle Soller Praises Tony Gilroy’s Writing

Total Film Magazine has released a brand-new image from the upcoming Star Wars series Andor that features Kyle Soller as Syril Karn and Kathryn Hunter (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) as Syril’s mother, Eedy Karn. Syril is an officer of the Imperial Security Bureau who has a “possessive” obsession with Cassian Andor, as Soller recently told SFX Magazine.

In addition to debuting the new image, Total Film also had a brief interview with the actor, who clarified the relationship between his character and his mother:

“He doesn’t have a father. He was raised by his mother, who is sort of the stage mother from hell. He has an extreme sense of need to impress, and fill a hole in himself. And so that really is about ascending to the top of whatever field he’s in. The field he’s chosen is one of restriction and complete control, and one of domination. I think we’ve been able to thread that through with the scenes that Syril has with his mother.”

Soller also holds showrunner Tony Gilroy in very high regard, as he explained:

“Tony wrote this incredible tapestry of life. It’s really Dickensian in its scope, and its achievement. I’m only, of course, speaking from Syril’s trajectory. But he then brings it down to incredibly personal, incredibly small domesticity, and almost turning it into a Pinter play. And it’s nothing I’ve sort of seen in a Star Wars movie before: the combination of the action and mystery and intrigue, and then you have these incredibly unique, personal stories coming through.”

Not many details about Syril Karn have surfaced. He only appears in a few frames in the trailer, and we see him in the village that we assume might be where we first meet Cassian (see image above), but we don’t know much else about him. Kyle Soller is being promoted by Lucasfilm as one of the lead actors of the show, so we assume his role will be rather large.

We will find out for ourselves when Andor has its three-episode premiere September 21st on Disney Plus.
