Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie Will Reportedly Start Filming in Early 2023

Taika Waititi has been popular this week. Between the release of his new Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder and his tongue-in-cheek quotes, like joking about not knowing Natalie Portman was in Star Wars (which many took seriously) or not knowing whether his Star Wars film will be made (likely also a joke), the director has found himself front and center in headlines and across social media. Well now The Hollywood Reporter is saying plans for Waititi’s mystery Star Wars movie is on firmer footing than the filmmaker would have you believe.

According to THR, Waititi’s Star Wars movie is set to begin filming in early 2023. Not much else is known about the film, beyond the Schoolhouse Rock looking logo Kathleen Kennedy presented when announcing the project. Here is what The Hollywood Reporter had to say:

Taika’s Star Wars project may be coming your way sooner than some of his interviews let on. Multiple sources tell us that the project is eyeing an early 2023 start. God knows plans can shift with Lucasfilm, is the usual caveat, of course.

Taika Waititi will develop a Star Wars film

The only other confirmed detail about the film is it will be co-written by Oscar-nominated 1917 screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Beyond that, there is not much else to wrap our hype around other than Waititi claiming he wants to expand Star Wars beyond what we are familiar with, which would indicate the Jojo Rabbit filmmaker wants to take the franchise to unfamiliar territory, something a Star Wars feature film has yet to do since Disney acquired Lucasfilm 10 years ago.

We will keep you updated as more details emerge about Waititi’s movie, which has leapfrogged the “pushed aside” Rogue Squadron as the next Star Wars movie to hit theaters after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. A release date is yet to be revealed, as it is impossible for the film to be ready to fill Lucasfilm’s December 2023 slot.
