Sneak Peek at ‘Star Wars’ Comics Coming This October; Darth Vader, The Mandalorian, Aphra, and More

Star Wars storytelling continues to come in massive waves! Today, we were given a sneak peek at an upcoming slate of October comics. Not only will we be continuing with stories we have been seeped in for a while, the opportunity for adventures with new characters will be granted as well.

The High Republic

As an ultimate fan of The High Republic era, I’d be remiss if I didn’t lead with the news hailing from the golden age of the Jedi. Author Cavan Scott will once again join forces with artist Ario Anindito as they bring us Issue #1 of Star Wars: The High Republic. This will launch the beginning of comic adventures for Phase II of The High Republic. Phase II will push back 150 years prior to the events of Phase I. In Issue #1 we will be introduced to Jedi Vildar Mac. Mac is described as being a “Jedi safe and secure in who he is and what he could be”.

With Starlight Beacon not in existence yet, it appears we will be opening up on this series on the moon of Jedha: “a beacon of faith and spirituality”. Ever since Rogue One I have been wanting to see more of this legendary site. The preview for the series indicates Mac will face a “nameless terror”. This undoubtedly alluding to the frightening monsters referred to as “The Nameless.” To catch up on some of what we know about The Nameless, here is our review  of The Eye of the Storm #2, which gives some insight on where they come from.

Scott and Anindito served as the dynamic duo of the titular comic series for Phase I. It’s been a while since we revisited this era, so here is a refresher on all things High Republic.

Star Wars

The flagship comic series from a galaxy far far away has been a wild ride to say the least. Luke has met Jedi from the distant past through a force fueled mycelial network that only author Charles Soule could have come up. We just saw Leia have one final confrontation with Imperial Commander Zahra: an issue capturing Leia’s character so well. Where it will go next is anyone’s guess, but by the looks of this cover we should be in for a treat.

Luke has been growing in knowledge and power and Issue #28 in October will “test his growing Jedi skills to the limit.” Not knowing anything about this issue yet I must say from a simple artwork standpoint, E.M Gist has delivered one of my favorite covers yet! Charles Soule promises to test the Rebel Alliance in ways they haven’t been tested yet in the continuation of this arc. Feel free to take a glance at our latest review from this series.

The Mandalorian

For those in favor of live-action comic adaptations, you will be interested in this. A sneak peek at Issue #4 of The Mandalorian is here. Written by Rodney Barnes and Illustrated by Georges Jeanty, fans of our friend Din Djarin and his little green friend will be pleased.

The first issue in this comic adaptation was dropped last week and it looks beautiful. The show we all watched on Disney Plus truly jumps out at you through its pages. For those who might need a quick reminder, Chapter 4 of The Mandalorian is titled: Sanctuary. Attempting to flee the Empire and the bounty hunters searching for Grogu (funny we don’t know his name yet during this time) Mando makes camp on the planet of Sorgan. Instead of a quiet hiding place he finds chaos, companionship and a fully functional AT-ST. Check out Issue #4 in October.

Darth Vader

For those who have been loyally following the Dark Lord of the Sith’s journey thus far you know just how riveting it has been. Come October, the stakes will be raised once again with the release of Issue #28.

The Queen’s Shadow herself, Sabe will be face to face with the Emperor. This arc has been a constant reckoning with Vader’s past as Anakin and his enduring torment. Sabe, the former handmaiden of Padme, knows his darkest secret. While she still holds onto a sliver of hope that Anakin Skywalker still lives inside that black suit it remains unclear what her fate will be. Here is our latest review from Darth Vader.

Doctor Aphra

Will she survive? How do all the converging storylines end? Issue #25 of Doctor Aphra looks like it will keep you turning the pages quickly. Coming into this issue there are so many storylines to resolve. The preview hints that the spark undying still lives in Aphra’s body and its power grows. We also know this will largely tie into everything that happened in Crimson Reign.

While Doctor Aphra is not necessarily a “new” character to those who delve into these stories, Aphra is widely unknown to the greater Star Wars fan base. I would love for the conclusion to this arc to be one that could streamline her into some live-action formats. Here is a link to all things Doctor Aphra.
