Carl Weathers Praises Layered Storytelling of ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Carl Weathers briefly talked about The Mandalorian season 3. Weathers is back this season as Greef Karga in front of the camera and as a director. The actor-turned-director already helmed an episode of the second season, Chapter 12: The Siege, and is very excited about doing it again.

About the episode he directed for season 3, Carl Weathers said the following:

“Oh there was a bit more [action], I think, in this one. [It is] a little different [to ‘The Siege’], because a lot of it had a lot more scope. But this one also had many, many different kinds of stories within the story, and that’s really nice.”

He went on to explain how directing for The Mandalorian has been such an enriching experience for him:

“I love directing. It’s my passion. This show gives you so much opportunity to deal with all these different characters. Even though they’re different episodes, it’s not like typical episodic television – it’s not a whodunnit, it’s not a dark comedy, it’s not a procedural. It’s so many different things, and it’s action-adventure on top of that. As a director, you get a chance to exercise your talent, and also your ability to deliver in those different areas.”

The footage shown during Star Wars Celebration introduced a brand-new Greef Karga, who is now donning regal robes. When the topic was brought up, Weathers praised the show’s costume designer:

“Amazing, isn’t it? We have such a wonderful wardrobe designer who puts all of that together. The wardrobe is majestic to say the least. Greef wears it well!

It really speaks to how he has matriculated, how he has grown in stature and ambition,” he explains. “And obviously on screen it looks fantastic. It adds so much.”

The Mandalorian season 3 is now in post-production and is scheduled for a February 2023 release date. In addition to Weathers, we know that Bryce Dallas Howard and Rick Famuyiwa will be directing at least an episode of the new season, each. Famuyiwa is also on board as executive producer this time around. And while it hasn’t been confirmed yet, we can’t imagine Dave Filoni won’t be helming at least one episode. Filoni is currently working on the Ahsoka series, for which he is directing multiple episodes.
