UPDATE! ‘The Mandalorian’: Taika Waititi Has Reportedly Acted in the Third Season

While Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie may be a while away, he will reportedly be making a return to the small screen with the third season of The Mandalorian.

In an article discussing Waititi’s process on developing Thor: Love and Thunder, Slashfilm has reported that amidst his mountain of active projects, Waititi somehow found time to direct more than one episode of The Mandalorian season 3:

“Taika Waititi is one busy dude. This week alone, he’s been making headlines for his role in Lightyear and for the buzz surrounding his latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder. And that only accounts for a fraction of Waititi’s busy schedule: he also serves as executive producer on two ongoing FX series, Reservation Dogs and What We Do In The Shadows, directed upcoming episodes of The Mandalorian season 3, and has the sports drama Next Goal Wins arriving later this year. That’s in addition to multiple movies in the works: adaptations of Flash Gordon and The Incal, plus a standalone Star Wars movie.”

If this report is accurate, then Taika Waititi would be among the list of returning directors for the series, such as Bryce Dallas Howard and Rick Famuyiwa, who directed episodes for the first and second seasons, and Carl Weathers, who directed an episode for the second season. Jon Favreau is confirmed to do the bulk of the writing, though it is not confirmed if he will be directing an episode.

Waititi has made a career out of being incredibly efficient as a filmmaker, so while it remains to be seen if the next Star Wars movie will be keeping its currently planned December 2023 release date, it’s entirely possible that he could get a film ready by that point if it starts filming late this year. That would still take a lot of moving parts, and it should still be noted that Lucasfilm does not appear to want to rush into release dates even if that release window might be ideal.

IG-11

UPDATE!

Slashfilm has updated their piece with a key clarification – Taika Waititi did not apparently direct for the season, but has “starred in upcoming episodes” of the signature Disney Plus series. This brings to mind his role of IG-11 in the first season, and while we can’t rule out flashbacks, a return of IG-11 specifically does not seem incredibly likely after the droid took a lava bath, followed by a self-inflicted thermal detonator blast. With that in mind, the IG series droids have plenty among their numbers and it seems just as likely that Waititi could be voicing another droid that is a similar model. It’s also possible that he could be playing a character in live-action, but we’ll have to wait and see on that front.

The first two seasons of Star Wars: The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney Plus. The third season is set to arrive in February 2023.
