Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Film Will Not Shoot This Year

In slightly puzzling news, Taika Waititi has revealed that his Star Wars film will not begin filming in 2022.

In an interview with TheWrap, Waititi revealed that he’s still trying to figure out what the film’s story will be, which makes it sound like principal photography is a long way off.

Not this year. I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with ‘Our Flag Means Death’ and ‘Time Bandits’ and during that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.

It’s not great news for us Star Wars fans wishing for more films. Some had begun to suspect that Taika Waititi’s film would be released in December 2023, with news last year that the Rogue Squadron film has been delayed. Strangely, Lucasfilm seems to be intent on keeping the slot. With Patty Jenkins unable to get involved with Rogue Squadron until she’s finished working on Wonder Woman 3 at least (an Amazons spin-off and a Cleopatra film might also be higher up her to-do list), some speculated that Taika’s film would be taking its place. It’s possible there could be a non-Star-Wars-related project filling that slot, though Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to release six months earlier on June 30, 2023.

If Waititi is busy with acting commitments and still in the storyboarding phase though, that seems like too short a window to get the film finished and released. Lucasfilm likely don’t want to rush their new film in the same way they did The Rise of Skywalker, so it’s tough to imagine any Star Wars film arriving in December 2023 unless Kevin Feige and Michael Waldron’s movie is further along than Feige would want us to believe. Waldron has recently announced that he is working on the project, even though Feige himself has stressed it’s a long way away.

Thankfully, we’ve got plenty of Star Wars content coming to Disney+ over the next year with The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian and Ahsoka all getting new and debut seasons. It’s just a shame we’ll have to wait a little longer for the big screen.
