‘Star Wars’ Storytelling Is Similar to How Video Games Are Written, Says Kathleen Kennedy

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy discussed how the way games are written today is very similar to the way they are telling new Star Wars stories. She also addressed some of the elements that appeared in recent video games that have now made the jump to live-action stories on Disney Plus.

Kennedy said:

“It’s funny, the more I’ve got to know how games are written, and that kind of persistent storytelling that goes on in a game environment where you’re just constantly building upon a single story, that’s much closer to what Star Wars is,”

Part IV of Obi-Wan Kenobi was heavily inspired by a section of Jedi: Fallen Order, a game that also introduced the Fortress Inquisitorius for the first time. Kennedy confirmed that it will not be the last time something like that happens:

“There’s intention around [bringing in elements from games], because there’s a huge investment by people in Star Wars along the way. We have fun identifying who carries forward, and what we reference, and the history. You always want to feel that there’s a history behind everything that’s happening in Star Wars. So there’s a lot of conversation that goes around that.”

Kennedy already teased in an interview with Vanity Fair that was published in May that VR has a solid future in Star Wars storytelling. The company is also in development of a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order, titled Jedi: Survivor. The official title was announced at Celebration in May, along with a teaser trailer. The game is aiming for a 2023 release date. Earlier this year, LEGO Star Wars. The Skywalker Saga, went on to become one of the most successful games in the history of the franchise, and Knights of the Old Republic II was just re-released on Nintendo Switch.
