It’s been a year and a half since Kathleen Kennedy officially announced a Lando series being in development for Disney Plus, from Dear White People creator Justin Simien. Since then, even though we haven’t had a lot of updates, we are slowly starting to learn more about what is going on behind the scenes with that series.
In a new interview with Cinemablend at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that Lucasfilm is waiting for Donald Glover to be done with his other commitments to start active development on Lando.
Here’s Kennedy’s quote:
” You need to ask Donald. He’s the one that holds all the cards here. But there’s no movement. I will say that honestly. But it’s not for lack of trying. It’s just that he’s a very busy guy… He’s got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he’ll come our way. So patiently waiting.”
We know Glover is currently in post-production for Atlanta season 4, which will probably air before the end of the year. He’s also in pre-production for Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith series, though that series was reported to be in development many months after Lando‘s original announcement — we assume this is the “one other thing” Kennedy says Glover is working on. The actor mentioned in a recent interview that he’s finishing up the writing for it. For that reason, it’s unlikely that Lando will begin pre-production before 2024 unless some kind of overlap happens.
This is the second time Kathleen Kennedy has mentioned Glover by name in the past week. When course-correcting on her comments about Lucasfilm not recasting legacy characters moving forward, Kennedy said they are still talking to Donald Glover about Lando. Moreover, in an interview during the press tour for Atlanta season 3, the actor himself hinted that he may be coming back to the role sooner rather than later.
We will keep you updated as soon as more news on Lando comes out. Stay tuned!
