Hayden Christensen: The ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Lightsaber Duels Are in Line With the Fighting Style of the Prequels

The May edition of Total Film Magazine continues to surprise us with Obi-Wan Kenobi-related content. In addition to the snippets of interviews released online in late April, the printed edition also contains a lot of interesting quotes from the actors, including Hayden Christensen opening up about the lightsaber duels in the upcoming Disney Plus series.

Hayden Christensen, who returns to the Star Wars franchise 17 years later to play Darth Vader, was asked about the fighting style Vader will bring to the series — is it more in line with the fast-paced, highly choreographed style of the prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith? Or the slower movements of the original trilogy? He said:

“We’re more in line with the prequels than we are with how the fights are in the original trilogy. These characters have aged, but not that much yet.”

When Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced in December 2020 that Christensen would be back in the role, there was a lot of enthusiasm online, as the Star Wars fandom had long been clamoring for the actor’s return. And, as Total Film pointed out to him, this was not about having Vader back, but rather him. To that, he said:

“It’s been a very rewarding experience in that regard, and it’s been really nice to have this wave of positivity over the prequel films. And to see that expression come across has been really nice.”

He also weighed in on how the series will join both the original and the prequel trilogies:

“We’re adding more connective tissue, and so that has to line up. That was something that I was cognizant of, even when we were doing the prequels, in knowing that there’s someone else that played this character before me and after me, and we have to find something that feels right. I spent a lot of time just watching all the Star Wars stuff I could, from the original films to all of the animated shows — Clone Wars, Rebels, and all of that.”

As we learned recently, the Obi-Wan Kenobi marketing push is now a well-oiled machine. The show debuts in just over two weeks, and the press world tour has begun, with Berlin being the first stop. The crew will also stop at Star Wars Celebration the day before the series premieres, on May 27th.
