‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Gets the ‘Disney Gallery’ Treatment on May 4

An inside look at the first (and hopefully, not the only) season of The Book of Boba Fett is set to arrive on May 4, 2022, as part of Lucasfilm’s annual Star Wars Day festivities.

Per What’s On Disney Plus, Lucasfilm have put together a documentary film detailing the behind-the-scenes process of the making of The Book of Boba Fett in the same way that they’ve approached documentaries for The Mandalorian‘s first two seasons, featuring commentary and interviews from the cast and crew of the hit series. While it’s not completely clear if this will be a single documentary film or a multi-episode docuseries, the approach taken with the second season of The Mandalorian seems to indicate that a single film may be the norm for new Disney Gallery presentations, similar to Marvel’s own behind-the-scenes documentaries.

Alternating between events set after Return of the Jedi and events set after The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett serves as a spin-off that explores a period of the legendary bounty hunter’s life when, after being robbed of his armor, he spends several years learning the ways of the Tuskens. With a new perspective on life and his armor reclaimed, Boba Fett decides to use his resources and form alliances that will take over the corrupt government of Mos Espa in hopes of making a better world for the people of the planet – though his intent to rule with respect is not met without resistance from the criminal element that settled in during Jabba’s absence, including an incredibly dangerous bounty hunter from his past.

Along the way, the series has an interlude continuing the story of the bounty hunter Din Djarin (the titular character of The Mandalorian) as he’s given a new task that will tie him closer to the roots of his people, and we learn how his adopted son Grogu has fared under the care of Luke Skywalker as the 50-year-old child continues to learn the ways of the Jedi. Both storylines intersect with Boba Fett’s own journey as the story culminates in an action-packed climax on the streets of Mos Espa.

It is not clear if there will be any other significant Star Wars offerings that will arrive on May 4, but the day has usually seen some new content hit on Disney Plus in the past few years (with The Rise of Skywalker and the finale of The Clone Wars dropping on that date in 2020, and the pilot movie for The Bad Batch and some other specials dropping on that date in 2021), so we’ll be sure to keep you covered if any more news breaks.

All seven episodes of the initial (and, hopefully, not the only) season of The Book of Boba Fett are available to watch on Disney Plus. The series stars Temuera Morrison Ming-Na Wen, David Pasquesi, Jennifer Beals, Carey Jones, Sophie Thatcher, and Jordan Bolger, and features guest appearances from the likes of Pedro Pascal, Timothy Olyphant, Corey Burton, Amy Sedaris, Danny Trejo, Emily Swallow, Jon Favreau, Rosario Dawson, and Mark Hamill.
