Rumor: New Kid-Focused High Republic Live-Action Series in Development

The High Republic era is seemingly growing more diverse in its storytelling by the day. While phase 1 was told on the page, future stories are going to branch out into different mediums. The Acolyte is getting set to begin filming later this year, Star Wars Eclipse is bringing the era to video games in a big way, and now a new rumor has surfaced regarding another series in the works. Cinelinx is reporting that a new High Republic live-action series is in development for Disney Plus, with a focus on younger heroes. Therefore, the primary cast will consist of kids in their pre-teen to teenage years.

Cinelinx notes they have heard from multiple sources that the basic idea behind the series is “Stranger Things in space”. If the show does follow in that vein, adults should have confidence the show isn’t strictly going to be for a younger audience. Their sources also say that a member of the publishing team is on board to help with the story.

Cinelinx‘s description of the series means we can probably assume we would be following a group of Padawans as they travel through the galaxy. The Stranger Things comparison immediately draws the mind to the Drengir, carnivorous plants that tap into the dark side, as a stand-in for the Demogorgon from the hit Netflix show.

Star Wars High Republic Dregnir

Daniel José Older’s Race to Crashpoint Tower sent Padawans Ram Jomaram and Lula Talisola right into a Drengir horde, so this wouldn’t be foreign ground for the High Republic to explore. There is no indication though that the series will feature known characters, although it is possible if one of the books/comics authors is involved.

Reminder that all of this is to be considered a rumor until an official announcement is made. There are still whispers in the air surrounding a potential High Republic movie as well. Star Wars Celebration 2022, in Anaheim, is not far off, so hopefully we get some answers there.
