The master is back! Two and a half years after he gifted us with the score for The Rise of Skywalker, Variety has now confirmed that John Williams composed and conducted the recording of a new main theme for the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series. While we all thought he was done scoring Star Wars after the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, it looks like Williams is doing what he already did for Solo: A Star Wars Story, composing the main theme and overall tone of the score.
For now, it is unknown who will be the main composer of the series, but Variety is saying that the music is being recorded right now in London. Apparently, Williams recorded his music last week in Los Angeles. While, according to Variety, this was done under strict security, TheOneRing.net found out about it and discussed it in a recent edition of their live show. Furthermore, word started to go out on Reddit last week about Williams scoring a TV project, though it was unknown which project it was.
Williams is now completing the roster of themes for original-trilogy characters, after he composed the theme for Han Solo in 2018, and now the theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi. This is only fitting, as the theme he created for Obi-Wan back in 1977 was ultimately repurposed and is currently known as The Force theme, one of the most beautiful pieces of music he’s ever created. In other words, the last time he tried to come up with a theme for Obi-Wan, he came up with the Force theme — what has he come up with now?
At 90 years old, the five-time Oscar-winning composer is as busy as ever. Besides working on Obi-Wan Kenobi, Williams is also scoring Spielberg’s semi-biographical story, The Fabelmans, later this year, and of course, Lucasfilm’s fifth Indiana Jones movie, coming out next year.
This is also similar to the situation we just had with Ludwig Göransson and Joseph Shirley in The Book of Boba Fett — Göransson is credited as the composer for the main themes, and Shirley as the main composer of the series. We will keep you posted as we find out who the main composer of Deborah Chow’s series will be.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will debut on Disney Plus on May 25th, exactly 45 years after the debut of Williams’ most iconic score, the original Star Wars.
