The new Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, is experiencing less audience demand (so far) than the first two chapters of the first season of The Mandalorian, the show that opened the door for Star Wars live-action television and was headlined by an unknown character. This comes to us from new data collected by Parrot Analytics and submitted to Insider, which compared the audience demand during the first two weeks of release for both series.
According to their numbers, audience demand for The Mandalorian during its first 11 days was 75.5% higher than that of The Book of Boba Fett in the U.S., and 101% globally. In addition to that, The Mandalorian was the No. 1 show in the world (and the U.S.) during this same period of time. Currently, The Book of Boba Fett holds 12th place in the States, and the 18th worldwide. Notice that this number is especially relevant if we consider that back in November 2019, when The Mandalorian first came out on Disney Plus, the platform wasn’t available in many countries outside of North America. With all of that said, The Book of Boba Fett is still in the top 0.2% most-watched projects worldwide at the moment, much like The Mandalorian was when it first came out.
It’s also interesting to consider that, prior to the release of the first episode of each series, audience demand was similar for both, but once The Mandalorian came out, it blew up (probably due to a cute green surprise hidden at the end of Chapter 1), and The Book of Boba Fett just hasn’t caught up. If we took The Mandalorian season 2 numbers into account, in which Boba Fett was reintroduced, the comparison isn’t even fair — according to a report from The Observer, season 2 was the third-largest season debut in the history of streaming, and the streaming share went up 30% from season 1’s debut to season 2.
Last week it was reported that, according to Samba TV numbers, The Book of Boba Fett‘s premiere was up 13% from Hawkeye‘s debut, as around 1.7 million households watched the first episode of the Temuera Morrison-led show. This is from a total of 46M TV devices that that company is tracking — notice that it doesn’t include any other way of watching the episode, like on a laptop or a mobile device, so the number is probably a little bit higher. Rough estimates for The Mandalorian season 2 debut state that it was viewed by almost 6M people.
As far as critics and audience reception to the show, it has been lukewarm. After the first episode, 83% of the critics that submitted reviews to Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a thumbs up, while only 71% of the audience did. While those numbers only account for the first episode, they are significantly down from the 90% and 95% that The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 scored with critics, respectively. But, one chapter is a small sample, so let’s wait to see how it plays out in full.
