Anthony Daniels Currently Doing C-3PO Performance Capture for Upcoming Project
It’s been over two years since we last saw Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but he might be back soon. Daniels recently posted a picture on Instagram announcing he’s currently doing performance capture work as C-3PO for an upcoming project. While he didn’t go into more details, this is probably Star Wars: A Droid Story, a new animated adventure from Lucasfilm that was announced over a year ago by Kathleen Kennedy.
Daniels’ involvement in A Droid Story was not confirmed by Kennedy back when she first announced the animated special in 2020, but from the project’s description, it seems inevitable that he will appear in it — after all, he even voiced C-3PO in projects like the VR experience Tales From Galaxy’s Edge or the Disney Plus special LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special. Kennedy said the following when she announced A Droid Story:
“As Lucasfilm continues to develop new stories, the intersection of animation and visual effects offers new opportunities to explore. Lucasfilm Animation will be teaming up with Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic, to develop a special Star Wars adventure for Disney+, A Droid Story. This epic journey will introduce us to a new hero, guided by legendary duo R2-D2 and C-3PO.”

At this point, it just makes sense that this is indeed A Droid Story, but in no way has it been confirmed. We haven’t seen much of Daniels as C-3PO in a performance capture suit, so it probably makes sense that they are bringing him into an animated project that will push the boundaries of the medium. And having Daniels do it just feels right, as he can provide all the subtle nuances that come with being a paranoid, nervous, neurotic, but lovable protocol droid.
