ILM Reveals New VFX Reel For ‘The Mandalorian’ Season Two

The Mandalorian ILM VFX Reel Feature

ILM has shared a new behind-the-scenes video featuring the visual effects of The Mandalorian season two!

The new video goes into detail about how Industrial Light and Magic created the impressive visual effects for the series. As some fans likely know, The Mandalorian combines the latest in cutting-edge technology like the Volume screen as well as some old throwbacks like physical model work.

Visual effects work on The Mandalorian was completed in all five of ILM’s studios (located in San Francisco, Singapore, Vancouver, London, and Sydney) as well as a contingent of other vendors working for ILM. The season’s eight episodes encompassed nearly 5000 visual effects shots in addition to all of ILM’s real-time effects work done for use during principal photography.

The effects team leveraged virtually every trick in the book, from miniatures and motion control to traditional puppeteering (including some assistance from Phil Tippett), advanced animatronics, spectacular special effects, and photo-real CG. Here’s a sampling of ILM’s post visual effects work done for the series that garnered ILM thirteen Visual Effects Society Award nominations.

The video gives a glimpse of a variety of VFX work from season two, including the massive Krayt dragon from Chapter 9, “The Marshal.” One of the unique things in the video is the brief look at Moff Gideon’s light Imperial Crusier, which was realized as a practical model the same as the Razor Crest had been.

It also details how seamless the integration between the practical sets and the LED wall is, as shown in the junkyard from Chapter 15, “The Believer.” Physical props and set dressing are positioned right up against the wall, which then provides added depth and scope to the scene with a projection designed by effects artists.

Another surprise in the video is the revelation that the Imperial tank from the same episode was constructed to some degree, with the cockpit being a physical element and the rest being a combination of CGI and practical effects.
