AFI Video Honoring ‘The Mandalorian’ Goes Behind The Scenes of Season 2 With Jon Favreau and Pedro Pascal

AFI The Mandalorian

Last month, the American Film Institute (AFI) named The Mandalorian one of their Top 10 Television Programs of 2020. Now, before their virtual event this Friday, February 26, they are honoring each of their nominees through a series of videos featuring the team behind the shows as well as some fun facts for the general audience. In the case of The Mandalorian, they posted two videos, one with the main actor Pedro Pascal talking about the show, and another with creator Jon Favreau.

Favreau talked at length about the Krayt dragon sequence from the season 2 premiere, The Marshal, which he directed, as well as the ending of season 2, The Rescue, which saw the return of Luke Skywalker through a sequence every Star Wars fan will remember for a very long time. According to Favreau, the Krayt dragon set piece was filmed on location in LA. He also talked about how the thing that totally sold the visual effects, and is in fact the hardest one to pull off, is the random movement of the sand. This sort of simulation is something that has been tremendously improved over the last few years.

The AFI website also posted a couple of fun fact cards about the show, which briefly explained how the StageCraft technology represents a major shift for the visual effects industry, as well as the film industry as a whole. They also talked about the character of Ahsoka Tano, who first appeared in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie.

From AFI:

“THE MANDALORIAN shows us the way. Jon Favreau and his visionary collaborators prove the power of STAR WARS to thrive beyond the Skywalker saga. Set far, far away from the central battle between good and evil, this intoxicating adventure expands the galaxy with heroic purpose and a genre-busting narrative all its own. In these dark times, “Baby Yoda” and this larger found family of icons glow with a warm, laser-like light to prove that the Force will be with us – always.”

And here is Jon Favreau, talking about the show:

The Mandalorian‘s legacy will forever be cemented by the fact that it proved live-action Star Wars can work on a comparable level of quality to its movies, so any other honors and accolades it gains over the course of its run are a bonus. It is so great to see how passionate its star and its creator are about making something truly special for fans of the franchise, and we look forward to the next adventures of Din Djarin in a galaxy far, far away.
