Marvel Unlimited: This Week’s Star Wars Releases

Marvel Unlimited is the Star Wars comic publisher’s subscription service. Think of it as like Netflix/Spotify but for Marvel comics. The comics are released on the service three months after they’re released for individual purchase (either physically/digitally).

They’ve got the entire canon Marvel Star Wars back catalog in their library plus anything they’ve released under the Legends banner.

Released this week:

Writer: Greg Paz Artist: Raffaele Ienco

Darth Vader #6

Summary

Between failing to either kill Luke Skywalker or turn him to the dark side and ignoring the Emperor’s orders by tracking down the truth behind Padme’s death, Vader needs to be reminded who is the master and who is the apprentice. Stripping him of everything and taking him back to his lowest point, on Mustafar, the Emperor won’t allow Vader’s resistance to continue.

Verdict

Greg Pak’s first run of five issues was a resounding success and while this issue isn’t as revelatory as those, it’s hard to judge since the majority of it is set up for the coming issues. Watching the Emperor break Vader down might not be a completely new concept but the art of this issue really takes it to new heights, as we feel fear for the dark lord himself. Especially powerful is a moment where Vader is force choked and we are shown visions of Vader’s victims by the same awful power. This is an interesting start to the new arc but it’s true value will reveal itself over the next few issues as the story unfolds. Full review with spoilers here.

Happy reading and may the Force be with you.
