Star Wars Insider #199: Holiday Gift Guide, Interviews, and The High Republic

The High Republic, goofy Gungans, and your one stop shop for Porg holiday sweaters – yes, Christmas has come a little earlier this year with the arrival of Star Wars Insider #199! Hitting newsstands in the US on Tuesday, the penultimate issue to #200 features content that spans the galaxy and every aspect of entertainment as it relates to that galaxy far, far away.

With all of the surprises revealed last week during Disney’s Investors Day, the future of Star Wars has never looked more interesting. With upcoming TV series and movies set anywhere from the prequel era to post ROTJ and beyond, it appears that fans are about to truly broaden their understanding of the greater galaxy. And all of that will begin in January when Charles Soule’s much anticipated Light of the Jedi hits bookshelves, heralding the beginning of a new era in Star Wars storytelling: the High Republic. To make the wait until January a little easier, Star Wars Insider‘s latest issue contains an exclusive story set aboard the Starlight Beacon. Truly a highlight of this issue, this all new story is written by Soule and contains hints as to what to expect in his upcoming novel, including references to a “mass casualty event” that is sure to set the stage for peril in the galaxy. Alongside part one of Starlight, this issue also includes a rather extensive roundtable discussion with Soule’s counterparts in creating the High Republic: authors Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel Jose Older, and Cavan Scott. In addition to discussing their collaborations into this unexplored time period, readers will also be treated to some intriguing tidbits about the Jedi who will feature in some of the Jedi slated to make their appearances next month with the era’s book launch.

This month’s Star Wars Insider also contains some truly great interviews with three pivotal actors in the Star Wars universe: Ahmed Best, Ashley Eckstein, and Sam Witwer. Best, who has seen Jar Jar Binks appreciation rise in recent years, discusses playing Jedi Master Kelleran in Jedi Temple Challenges and even touches on whether we’d see him as the Gungan ever again. With all of the newfound love for Ahsoka, thanks to Rosario Dawson’s performance in The Mandalorian, respect must be given to the woman who truly breathed life into Snips – and that is fan-favorite Eckstein. The voice actor behind Anakin’s former Padawan, Eckstein gets an opportunity to gush about the character and touch on meeting J.J. Abrams for Ahsoka’s The Rise of Skywalker cameo. And rounding out the excellent interviews is Sam Witwer who has played everyone from Starkiller to Emperor Palpatine to Maul – roles that are all touched on in a fun discussion with an actor who has always been a huge fan of the projects he’s gotten to work on.

If all that isn’t enough to make you pick up the latest Star Wars Insider, credit must be given to their Holiday Gift Guide which will not only have you shopping for the little Ewok in your family but also, mostly, for yourself. Empire Strikes Back stockings, Wookie sweaters and all the Mando merch you can imagine, there’s plenty of ideas for last minute additions to your list!
