The Last Jedi Wins 5 Empire Awards! Ram Bergman Confirms They’ve Already Started Working on the New Star Wars Trilogy

Rian Johnson’s take on the galaxy far, far away might not have gotten much recognition at the major award shows this year, but Star Wars: The Last Jedi won pretty much every major award at this year’s Empire awards, voted for by the magazine’s readers.

The “Rakuten TV Empire Awards 2018” ceremony took place yesterday at Camden’s Roundhouse in London, where The Last Jedi took home 5 awards out of 9 nominations. The movie won the three main awards of the event – Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. Also the eighth installment in the Star Wars saga won the award for Best Visual Effects and Costumes.

Rian Johnson and Daisy Ridley both were attending the event, collecting their awards for Best Director and Best Actress. You can watch a video with Daisy’s speech below, thanks to “Hey U Guys”:

Also, Mark Hamill was in the house to receive Empire’s Icon Award, presented by Daisy Ridley. This recognition comes just 10 days after Hamill received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Before the actual ceremony, Empire interviewed Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman about the status of their new Star Wars trilogy which was announced by Lucasfilm before The Last Jedi hit theaters. After The Last Jedi received some negative feedback upon its release, many fans were wondering if the project was still happening, especially after the changes Lucasfilm has made in the past with directors Josh Trank, Colin Trevorrow, and Phil Lord & Chris Miller. Since the announcement of Rian’s new trilogy, he has been very evasive in his interviews, which has been taken by some fans as a sign that the project might be in trouble. Now, in this new interview, producer Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson seem to put these worries to rest, revealing that they have started working on this project.

While the comments are still vague, it definitely seems that things will get in motion soon, especially with the announcement that this was Ram’s and Rian’s final The Last Jedi related promo event.
