I think he is on the island and disconnected from the force not only because of his failure, but because the stronger he becomes, if he rebuilds the jedi order, then the dark side will become equally stronger to keep the balance. He says himself that at the height of their power the jedi allowed Darth Sidious to rise. This is true but also most probably inevitable in a system that keeps itself in balance.
The force manifested itself in Rey and also Anakin so strongly because the system was coming out of balance.
I saw 4dx version yesterday. Between real water spray of the sea at the island and trying not to lose my popcorn, I noticed two things.
Luke offers three lessons and only gives two. According to one news site this third lesson is about bandits attacking the caretakers. Luke says if they interfere then the bandits will come back in greater numbers. Snoke also gives this lesson but the other way round: darkness rises and light to meet it. This is somehow symbolic of my point above.
The other point I noticed is when Rey is about to leave the Falcon to meet Kylo, she is messing with the drawer where the Jedi books end up – i think. It is very fleeting.
I like this theory. Always wondered how destroying the Sith brought balance to the force.
I thought that maybe the reason the Force manifested itself in Rey so strongly was perhaps linked to the fact Luke cut off his connection to it. I wonder if the timeline matches up, around the time Rey is born does Luke disconnect from the Force?

That “IS” the story,you just figured it out. i keep telling people THE FORCE “AWAKENS.” very important Title like snoke says. “Darkness Rises.and the light to meet it.”
Rey and Ren are both equally powerful in The Force. Luke has died – being cut off from the The Force. Prophecy fulfilled! Anakin HAS brought balance to The Force.
However, The Force is always in motion… so, ‘balance’ will not last for long. I like how this plays into Luke’s realization that The Jedi were arrogant and misunderstood ‘why’ The Force was out of balance. The more power the light side had, the more powerful the dark side would accumulate. Makes a ton of sense… and it makes me like The Last Jedi ‘slightly’ more. We shouldn’t have to connect all these dots our own and fill in all the missing pieces. Still bad storytelling in my opinion.
No, Luke was connected as little as five years ago when he was training Ben.
This is a really good theory. Its also one that could be simply ret-conned into the narrative and make it a better story. Instead of trying to explain that Luke was hiding because in a moment of weakness he ‘created’ Kylo Ren – it could be that Kylo was being corrupted by Snoke – so Luke hid away and withdrew from the force to PROTECT the galaxy. The less power Luke had / the less power the Dark Side could have. Balance of The Force – truly. Plays right into the OT and Prequel stories – but ‘concludes’ them in a great way too!
WOW – what a great concept and a horrible missed opportunity.
This is what’s called the stage of grief where you bargain with yourself. Your trying to find meaning to like the story.
Perhaps. Still – its an awesome story – and would have made the whole plot of the Sequel Trilogy top-notch. Imagine, if instead of chucking the lightsaber over his shoulder… if Luke responded, “No – we don’t need to do this.” Then for the first part of the movie he keeps talking to Rey in odd ways – only to find out that Luke has not been talking to ‘Rey’ at all – but he’s been talking directly to ‘The Force’. He hid away from the Force to diminish the power and fighting of the galaxy – but as the dark side has grown – THE FORCE started looking for Luke. THE FORCE needed him to come back to restore the balance. His look at the end of The Force Awakens would have actually made sense – as he would have been distraught over being discovered by The Force. ACTUALLY – it would have made the title, “The Force Awakens” make soooo much more sense. It adds to the mysticism of The Force – and expands upon it in awesome new ways.
I remember thinking it might be a cool idea if Luke had lost the power of the force, and when Ray arrived on the island she had to train him again so he could go and rescue Leia…

I think that’s a strawman argument. I don’t speak for others, but I think I’m simply judging Disney by the same standards I judged Lucas when he ran the show. I certainly don’t wish for the destruction of the Star Wars franchise, but I want Disney (just like I wanted Lucas with the prequels) to listen to fan feedback. Sure, Lucas could churn out big money-making prequels, but he damaged many of the OT character arcs in the process (particularly Vader who turned out to be a creepy, whiny stalker in the prequels). And none of his new prequel characters were legendary or beloved. And I feel TLJ has done the same for Luke and most of the sequel cast of forgettables. So after the prequels, I wanted a shakeup (not necessarily a sale of the company) where Lucas would be just a consultant on the films rather than autocrat. Now I’m beginning to wonder if Disney needs to shake up Lucasfilm too. Given the repeated controversy behind Kennedy’s handling of the films (with revolving door of directors, etc.), I’m hoping KK is shown the door, and someone like Dave Filoni be put in charge (yes, I know that sounds crazy to most folks, but I’ve thought much of his work has been the best Disney-made Star Wars to date: a great blend of OT lore and new material.)

Sure, it‘s going to make a lot of money. But this whole divisive fan-reception is surely going to worry them on some level. You have to keep the hardcore fans in the boat in order for the follow-up movies to continue making mountains of money… To know your brand and core audience is the key to that.
My bet is, that the next movie will be played safe by Disney.
Everytime I get mad about my feelings towards TLJ and maybe I’m being too hard on the movie. I hear Luke Skywalker himself just as mad and realize it’s not just me.
TFA was better in my opinion. I loved it the first time i came out. I knew Han would die. I watched it 5 times on big screen. When i came out of TLJ, I had confused emotions. I didn’t expect Luke’s last scene. I like TLJ but a bit disappointed mainly about Luke

Couldn’t agree more, loved it as a film and even as a Star Wars film. The only thing I’d change is the treatment of Luke.
Yes that’s my feelings as well! Disappointment. I was expecting to love TLJ even more than TFA but I didn’t. I also didn’t like that all the mystery from TFA has been done away with. I can’t even begin to think what they can do with episode IX now to make it exciting! We already know Rey is more powerful than Kylo and will beat him when they next meet. Will IX just be about the rebuilding of the resistance/rebellion and training new jedi!? Just feels a bit meh now! I’m also a bit sad that there won’t be anymore saga films after IX as the skywalker line will have gone.

For those disappointed with “how they treated” Luke……did you you also read those EU books post ROTJ. Luke is my favorite MOVIE character and his arc is fricking AMAZING. He goes from somebody who aspires…..to somebody who INSPIRES at the end. I don’t understand the complaints, unless you read those EU books and put Luke on this “pedestal”. We all have moments of weakness….his had huge repercussions, it’s life, but at the end……he DID become a Legend !! Back to drinking my green milk.
The movie takes several viewings,it suffers because the middle section is so long you forget what was said when we get back to Luke,it is all explained perfectly once you have digested the movie Fully. and also luke was not out of character! he has thrown a lightsaber before. tried to kill his father etc. what you see if the greatest hits of his Human side when we meet up with him. which sets up his return very well. Fans are confusing the Legend with the MAN,just like Rey is Doing in the Film. so don’t be like Rey DO YOUR HOME WORK. and Watch the OT. Hell luke is even a Farmer when we meet up with him again. and that made me smile! I loved TLJ.
i have watched this movie 4 times…and it got worse to me with each viewing…sure there were cool moments..but over all the movie is still terrible. fans arent confusing anything with anything…you people are seriously forcing yourselves to like this piece of trash.. if you like it you like it…more power to ya..but you guys really need to stop trying to convince people why its a good movie..you are wasting your breathe. the people who hate it wont change their mind. lol..nobody could ever convince me that this was a good movie. ” do your home work”? haha. this was more like a youtube fan film with a blockbuster budget..this wasnt a good Star Wars movie..they should have made episode 7 take place 100 years after ROTJ and avoided this mess theyve created. Just watched it for the 3rd time.. it was the most fun. better than the first 2 viewings, and i went on pre-release night! lol
So an untrained Leia is able to bring herself back to life with the force..A force power that only a dark side user can obtain…a force power that Only one being has ever been able to achieve. A force power that is the sole purpose to why Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side and became Vader. A force power that Vader and the Emperor never achieved even though they were the most powerful Sith ever. Righhhhhhhhhhhhhht. They made the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader completely pointless and meaningless…but it was a good movie. Righhhhhhhhhhhhht.

apparently you havent read the book Bloodline…SHe was never trained…ever. It says so in plain black and white text… and how do i know she was dead?????? did you see the same movie? SHe got sucked out into SPACE after her bridge blew up…she was killed instantly…youre welcome
That doesn’t mean she was dead. No one said she was dead. There was nothing in the film that implied she was dead. People can survive explosions. People can survive in vacuums for very short amounts of time. (Granted TLJ was a bit longer than what is possible, but The Force can do crazy things.) Bloodline didn’t even say she was dead either. Ha ha.

4. Simple Force pull is simple, she could already feel/hear through the force even back in the OT
Just watched the film a 3rd time. The explosion broke the window and she was seen sucked out. She wasn’t impacted by a full explosion.
And luke took out the Death Star without a targetting computer with no training either. She had no fromal training, but she knew just as much as Luke did when he took out the Death Star.
Oh.. and she’s a freaking Skywalker…..

She wasn’t dead — she’d just been in space for a few seconds. At most, she warmed herself up and pulled herself back to the ship. Pulling (that is, moving objects) is one of the first and simplest things we ever see people do with the Force. After thirty years of knowing about her family’s connection to the force and having decades to practice, I’d be shocked if Leia couldn’t do at *least* that much.

My take is that Luke disconnected from the force and then the force itself strives to balance the arrival of Snoke and corruption of Ben Solo with the light. One obvious manifestation would be in Leia. Rey is also formidable. Luke’s disconnection act fulfills the you cannot escape destiny philosophy.

You can survive in space for a brief time. It’s not instant death.
If she was truly in a vacuum then the debris would have been shifted further by the air from the bridge dispersing further. She was still among the debris and indeed there was more debris further out than her. My take is that this was still a very short space of time and the air had not really dispersed. Certainly not dead by my reckoning.
I knew a lot of people would be disappointed with the film after the media and fans were blindly hyping it to be the best Star Wars movie. And I have no idea why. I guess they assumed Rian Johnson would make Star Wars great? Well, we’re lead to assume it’s Johnson’s film but ultimately Disney has the final say as to what happens…. which Rogue One basically proved and now the director replaced for Solo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson had to submit his script to be approved as he was writing it.
I remember when Johnson was first announced to write and direct. People found old tweet’s of him dissing the OT SE and PT. Then those tweets were suddenly removed shortly after his announcement. Johnson had to play to ball with Disney to keep his job, otherwise he would have been a goner, too. Johnson is ultimately Disney’s puppet. And now the biggest puppet of them all is returning to direct the last one.

The more you have to explain a movie to yourself and see it 7 more times in order to “like it” is a Red Flag. If a film requires that much work (bordering on therapy) to “like it”, then something is fundamentally awry.
