Dave Filoni Coy on Future, but That Future Will Be with Star Wars

As Star Wars: Rebels‘ final season cruises along, many of us wonder how the series will come to a close. However one question that has escaped many to this point, perhaps until the show’s final episode airs is, “What’s next for Dave Filoni?” The current keeper of the flame spoke with io9’s Germain Lussier, and in classic Filoni fashion, touched ever so lightly on what lies ahead for him.

In an interview with Germain Lussier posted today on io9, Dave Filoni discussed Rebels coming to a close, and using his most vague-tipped brush, touched lightly on his future after the show, but perhaps with a few hints.

First off, fans can rest easy knowing that Filoni isn’t leaving the galaxy any time soon. He wears his loyalty on his sleeve, going so far as to say he feels he owes it to his team at Lucasfilm (with him since Clone Wars) to keep creating new Star Wars projects and stories:

I have an incredibly talented group of people working here [at Lucasfilm]. They’ve worked for me all 12 years that I’ve been here. So I feel indebted to them and want to keep creating work for them so they can use their abilities and tell great stories. I also want to keep pushing myself into areas that are challenging and new. I’ve had a lot of experience now interacting with live-action directors like Rian Johnson who’s been really wonderful to me and showing me what their production is like.

One clear takeaway from that quote is that Filoni has been not only interacting with Rian Johnson as a fellow Star Wars creator, but that Filoni spent some time on The Last Jedi set, understanding how the production of a live-action major motion picture operates. As a matter of fact, if you go back to Rian Johnson’s personal black and white camera shots (which he shared some at Celebration in Orlando) there is one of Filoni himself on set!

Filoni goes on to state that the medium in which he tells his stories is not the priority, but he doesn’t stop short of expressing his willingness to branch out beyond television. This is purely my interpretation but it almost sounds like he is leaving it up to Lucasfilm to give him a shot.

I want to celebrate stories, and it doesn’t matter what medium its in. I don’t care — big screen, small screen — I just need space to tell a story. And do it as best I can. That’s my goal in the end. So we’ll have to see what form that takes in the future. …But let’s just put it this way. I learned from the best.”

The final quote from the interview is certainly a stamp of stability, maybe even stylistic continuity?

“I feel rather indebted to George for the knowledge that he gave me…and it’s part of my responsibility to try to help other people maintain what makes Star Wars such a wonderful universe to visit.”

Dave Filoni is ready to continue telling Star Wars stories, and while he may be ready and willing to branch out into bigger and better mediums to tell those stories, he knows not to stray too far from the root of who made Star Wars, and what made it so great, the mind and imagination of his mentor George Lucas.

Such mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, yeah, Lucas saw something in Filoni that he thought was pretty special, and he (Filoni) hasn’t made any major missteps to call that judgement into question – certainly, I think his early output has been better than Ron Howards’ early output, another guy Lucas identified as having something worth nurturing. I also haven’t seen anything to suggest that Filoni misunderstands the proper tone for Star Wars like so much of the non-Lucas creators have. So I’d like to see him get a shot, at least on a smaller scale and budget film.

On the other hand…KK hasn’t really filled me with any confidence that she understands how to effectively deal with creative differences as the head of LFL, and by extension the keeper of this franchise. She keeps (apparently) hiring the wrong people for the wrong projects, and the only managerial tool she seems to have in her toolbox to solve issues is to fire or sideline her chosen directors. Take a guy who was a Lucas-era protege, who may feel like, having been there for a decade in a creative role, that he can take an artistic stand and have a strong voice in the conversation, and I can see that going all kinds of wrong.

I see where you’re coming from. I don’t know what exactly is going on at Lucasfilm and KK, but if there’s someone that knows Star Wars it’s Dave so if he’s given the opportunity, KK is gonna have to take a seat and let him do what he does best. I doubt there would be any creative differences though because they both would want to produce something the fans would enjoy.

Indicates to me he’ll be moving to do a movie in a the near future. Though I’d love it if he did a novel also. Maybe a short story on Anakin right after his death over Endor similar to the Obi-Wan short story in From a Certain Point of View.

The is huge difference in quality between The Clone Wars (2008) series and Rebels. The difference being Lucas being able to tell Filoni “no”.

The difference is Lucas not being able to pay himself for every single episode, and Disney XD

…as if Kathleen Kennedy couldn’t easily tell Filoni “no” if she wanted to? The real difference between the two shows is that TCW had a budget larger than that of most live action shows, and that allowed it to have the scale and quality that a Star Wars show deserves. Rebels gets a TV budget, which is why the “Mandalorian Civil War” episode took place in the fucking desert.

Do you really want to have this discussion?

      Do you?

Do you want to talk about what George Lucas did with the direction of Clone Wars?

Do you want me to go through and hand pick the worst episodes in the Clone Wars (And there’s probably almost a seasons worth) that were George Lucas’s brain children that shat all over the TV screen so we can talk about who needed who to say “no” to an idea?

Please. Tell me you want to have that conversation. I am ready to school you on this one.

I never really felt that way about the guy. However I don’t hold him in such a regard that a lot of others do. I felt his work has been “ok.”

If anything the most perhaps “cocky” thing he said was he sort of liked upsetting the fans. Yet I can understand his reasoning. I mean come on. The Star Wars base is passionate and they will absolutely tear into you for the dumbest of reasons.

He generates rock-star level hype and attention for himself while putting out a product that ultimately disappoints. He also fucks with fans’ heads, which I kinda like… but it’s still pompous.

More power to him, if he’s comfortable basking in that lackluster limelight, but I’d be ashamed and I certainly would not be looking to level-up to anything outside of animation.

For a while, I was hyped for an Ashoka project, but I’ve lost interest at this point, and I really hope they don’t attempt the live-action route.

Receiving a dictionary definition from another forum member in order to force a justification of an opinion (which isn’t even an uncommon one) is pretty fucking insulting.

I feel the same for a lot of the folks here, too.

But I will reiterate this as I always do with folks who get butt hurt when they say something inflammatory and people respond to it in a logical way to break apart the shitty argument presented.

This is an internet discussion forum on a fan site for a one of the biggest IPs in the world. People are going to have opinions. And fight about them. If you post something up here, you have to expect people will reply and disagree with what you said.

The Kenobi vs. Maul duel alone shows his understanding of core SW aesthetic, it’s not about flashy moves or shit blowing up everywhere. Everything on screen should serve the story first, and what a phenomenal duel we got as a result. Pure Kurosawa/Lucas stuff!

That episode doesn’t really advance anything in the Rebels story. It doesn’t do anything for Ezra or Kanan or Hera. It’s just him fixing the problem he created by not having Maul die at the end of Season 2.

unfortunately it would just be throwing good money after bad as rebels has been way behind in average viewers vs clone wars since the start. if this show wasn’t canon i think they would have pulled the plug even earlier.

Yeah. Putting it on XD was a terrible idea. I think they ran into trouble too with how it butted up against Rogue One which started to change existing canon and crimped where the Rebels could go.

Also, they have two Jedi (Now one a Lt. Commander in the Rebel Alliance) who have met Mon Mothma but are never once discussed with Luke in the OT. I assume that’s the biggest reason they’re pulling the plug is continuity is becoming an absolute mess.

Which is a shame, I did really enjoy season 1 & 2 and most of three except for the continuity stuff starting to manifest.

It’s sad too, because at the start of the show it was obvious that they were going to focus their show’s main story on the Inquisition. But then they dropped that and went on to connecting to Rogue One.

Actually Deadly is pretty open to most stuff that comes out, and he gives everything a chance and even allows folks to attempt to engage him on elements of a show or film (Like Rebels) he may not like to try and sway him.

It was. But the same can be said about either of the Star Wars animated series. They are, in the end, a cartoon. That are made for kids and tweens but cater to Star Wars fans. Which can be a hurdle to over come and enjoy them.

I dunno. There is shit in TCW that makes me want to break my television, especially since that shit is now canon. But I did learn to stop worrying and love the animated series (for what they are).

Except that their mature content (the Marvel Netflix shows) are staying, as Disney still wants to maintain a family friendly image. If a live action Star Wars show were to be any more mature than TCW, it would probably have to end up on Netflix.

They do, but. I will say this. I don’t care for the prequels. But what they did bring to Star Wars was more world building and lore expansion than the OT dreamed of doing. TCW was almost completely dedicated to expanding the SW Universe. Some of it was bad, a lot of it was good.

Same goes for the Prequels. I adored all the designs from Episode I to III for both the Republic and the Separatists. Loved the droids, the starships, the starfighters, the ground vehicles. The Clones and their multitude of helmets and colors. It was good shit.

For me, it fixed the Prequels a lot. I mean, I couldn’t stand to think of Anakin Skywalker and Hayden Christianson’s performance. Enter TCW, and Anakin was saved. When I think of Anakin, it’s the animated version. Which is…weird, but, for me, doable.

That’s just me and my opinion though.

Brad Bird’s failure to transition from animation to live-action should be a cautionary tale. It’s no easy feat, and the skills & experience don’t always overlap.

Except what was his failure exactly? His MI film was well received, both critically and by audiences as I recall. Tomorrowland…well, that script is just a freaking mess, so Bird clearly bears some major responsibility there, but I think it’s as a writer, not as a director. I don’t see how he’s been a disaster as a live-action director though.

I’m thinking “Tomorrowland”. The “MI” film was a hit, and you’re right — I should give him credit for that (even though all of those flics kinda blur together in my own recollection, and the idea of revisiting any of them seems exhausting to me).

I’m just very grateful that he turned down “TFA” in favor of “Tomorrowland”. In addition to the script problem, that film had a constant tonal shift, which is something that is easily forgivable in animation, but stands out in live action. Tim Burton has that problem too.

(I should also mention that I adore all of Bird’s animated films.)

He does a really good job creating interesting content despite the short timeframe of each Clonewars/Rebels episode, a limited budget and the young target audience of his shows. I can only imagine what Filoni would be able to do if he wasn’t held back by these limitations.

I said as much below. I don’t hate the guy or anything. He made two children shows about Star Wars. So I wasn’t expecting much. I’ll say this… some of the episodes across all the seaons were really good. Most were filler or Saturday morning cartoon shenanigans. Which again… how can I hold that against him? That was the target audience really.

Now the guys who treat him like the second coming of Lucas. I don’t know what to say to them. I’m glad they are happy but I wouldn’t even want Lucas back. So there’s a separation right there.

The one that always surprised me is the cult following of Lord and Miller. Those guys were treated like master minds. Then you imdb them to find out they’ve done next to nothing outside of a few oddball comedies/animated films. Seriously it’s like 4 things and they were all rather ho hum to me 😛

It’s aimed for older kids as all of XD’s programming is.

But the sample you used in your scientific analysis of the show’s appeal, two children you know, is outstanding. You should probably forward the results to Disney asap.

          • October 29, 2017 at 2:00 pm
            Permalink

The show is rated Y7. I don’t think it’s for “older kids”. If Disney wants to make future kids’ shows, they need to base them on some unknown world with no connections whatsoever to the rest of canon, so that everyone who wants to stay up-to-date on canon can completely avoid it.

          • October 29, 2017 at 5:48 pm
            Permalink

Disney XD is for kids 6-14, with most of the programming falling to a target audience of 9-12. The Y7 does not indicate the age range at all, Stranger Things is rated for 14 year olds, yet the show appeals to adults just as much as kids.

You can always Wiki it, Disney doesn’t have to do anything, and the idea is to have anything published; be it an animated series, live action television show, video game, or comic book, connect to canon.

I doubt they’re going to heed your request.

Oh my God, another one of these stupid debates. The next thing someone is going to chime in and say that Star Wars was originally made for little kids. You’re just stabbing in the dark with your comments about what you believe the show was rated for. Y7 is Y7, and Rebels sucks because it was a show made for little kids that tries to keep older people interested with small morsels of non-juvenile themes. My suggestion was actually a good one, and I hope Lucasfilm won’t make a Rebels-type mistake again. I could care less about what you doubt.

Yup, it sure does. Seven and up. It doesn’t mean “target audience of 9-12” as a previous person said. It means starting at 7 years old. That is a second grader. And, unlike that same misguided person said, The Clone Wars was not aimed at second graders. It was quite enjoyable for teens and adults. Young kids could also get some great entertainment from it too. THAT is how Star Wars should work. Exactly like the original in 1977. Perfect for teens and adults, and great but a little challenging for younger kids who can handle it.

No. He’s right. In terms of what children are generally interested in, there is no vast difference in what a 7-year old enjoys as opposed to what a 9-year old likes. I thought everyone knew this.

So you believe a 7-year-old has the same social and mental maturity and coping skills as a 9-year-old? Really, there is no reason to keep proving how stupid and ignorant you are. Surely you understand that what a 7-year-old is “interested in” has nothing to do with ratings and content limitations, right? You must know that 7-year-olds are not capable of understanding dialog and themes that a child 2 years older can handle, right? Or maybe you have not had children yet, and you really have no concept whatsoever so you’re just talking out of your hind end. Yeah, that’s probably it.

I said there is no “vast difference” between a 7 and a 9-year old, and there isn’t. I’m not “stupid and ignorant” because I disagree with you. And really, you have a habit on these forums of resorting to name-calling when being out-debated. You should probably return to the nest (if, in fact, you’ve even left) for some additional home-training. See? I can do this too.

I’ve got children. I understand their behaviors and ability to process things. Do you have kids? If so, I suggest you begin to pay closer attention to them. I’d also suggest that you don’t model for them the same behaviors you demonstrate online. But something tells me you’re really young so….

I’m not trying to bust your chops too much, but when you get online and launch into the piss-and-moan routine because characters you like and want all to yourself appear in features made for children (and on a Star Wars site, no less) you’re going to get roasted a bit.

Y7 means its friendly for folks 7 years and older. It doesn’t mean that the content is specifically made for 7 year olds.

Your suggestion isn’t a good one at all. It goes against their new business model. And who cares about a show that has no impact on the greater IP if everything else produced is connected to it? They’re going to do that just to appease YOU. Haha, s’a’good one.

Sorry they made an animated series for kids you didn’t like. A lot of other people didn’t either. Perhaps they’ll take the criticisms to heart and produce a new animated series closer to the vein of TCW, which was TV-PG (That 7 year olds still watched despite that rating).

You should probably send your cell number and email to Lucas Film. I know they want to hear everything you have to suggest.

P.S. I for one never believed Star Wars was made for children. However, the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, said it was. So I guess you can argue with the dude who made everything and tell him he was wrong.
