New Designs from Star Wars: The Last Jedi Leaked Online

New designs from The Last Jedi have leaked online, and we can confirm that these are the real deal. Among the leaks are designs relating to certain “guards”, stormtroopers, and First Order vehicles. If you do not wish to be spoiled, then move along….move along. If you want to check them out, proceed!

The photos are promotional images for yet-to-be-released merchandise for The Last Jedi. They were leaked just moments ago via Facebook here. We received confirmation from a reliable source that they are indeed real, so here they are!

VISUAL IMPERIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!

A Red First Order Guard: very reminiscent of the Emperor’s Royal Guards from Return of the Jedi, but by the looks of it we may see these guys in action, unlike Palpatine’s almost statue-like guards.

First Order Stormtrooper Officer: (Red Pauldron could signify another rank but up until now figures with red ones have been referred to as Officer). It appears this officer is wielding an axe-like weapon, perhaps similar to the electric current harnessing (lightsaber blade blocking) conductor vane weapon used by the now deceased FN-2199 aka “TR8R”.

First Order AT-M6: a clear variation of the infamous, yet clumsy, AT-AT walkers, this one now equipped with a central cannon located above the cockpit. The front feet seem to be pointed backward, perhaps to prevent imbalance caused by pesky tow cables! Good luck with this one Wes Janson!

What do you think of the images? We are definitely interested to see some Imperial Guards actually doing something for once! The new cannons on the walkers could make for some interesting effects, and who doesn’t want to see a stormtrooper swinging an axe? Sound off in the comments below and be sure to head into the Cantina to talk about it!

The new walker appears to walking on the back of it’s hand. I wonder if there is a non-stylistic reason for this design?

It very Gorilla like. I really like this upgrade to the Walkers.

This upgrade feels like a real upgrade in-universe not just simply “lets change it a little to sell toys and keep nostalgia). The walkers legs were the downfall of the Empires design.

The legs definitely look more stout. Hopefully the Resistance has upgraded the strength of their tow cables accordingly.

Good god the last thing we need is a tow cable takedown. I’m pretty sure there will be something fresh in taking down these monsters!

I wouldn’t mind a little bit where one of the fighters tries to do a tow cable takedown and gets owned by some new piece of tech on this walker. Maybe that’s too on-the-nose, though.

That sort of nod wouldn’t be bad IMO. They could of done something similar in TFA by having someone suggest using the trench to attack, only to have Poe say no. Should get you on board with gems like that!

Look at the front legs, I suspect those vanes are some kind of anti-cable defense. For example, cable gets snagged in one, they snap shut and cut the cable. Perhaps there is a cutting edge mounted on the underside of the vanes.

Yeah, I don’t want to see that rehashed. I was just making an observation that the new walkers seem better suited to defend against that type of attack.

The design change would also make a lot of sense in the context of the OT, because cool as those walkers were; they were very vulnerable. So having a more low-profile walker is a means to rectify the mistake. And that is good subtle world building through technology.

Though, at the same time the FO I argue are rather stupid in attempting to recreate another superweapon. But that is another discussion. Point is, props on RJ and the production team for that small detail.

Well, if we want to pick at Star Wars tech, the entire walker thing is sort of dumb. With repulsorlift technology, why in the world make a weapon of war that walks? Star Wars isn’t intended to make “sense” in that regards. It’s fantasy more than science-fiction.

Terror. It was always meant to intimidate opponents and provide a tactical view of the battlefield.

What we should be asking is why they didn’t use walkers like tanks were deployed in WWII, that is, you protect them with foot soldiers and support weapons, not least of all anti-aircraft defense. But that goes back to your initial statement, this is fantasy not hard sci-fi. 🙂

If you look at some of the early McQuarrie Hoth artwork, the walkers are deployed exactly as you’ve suggested. And it looked damn cool.

Agreed on the fantasy part. I will admit; I have a soft-spot for the Walkers. Goofy and a bit dumb, yeah. But they still contributed to one of the best action sequences in cinema in ESB. So yeah, I look forward to seeing the next evolution.

Though, man; I wished they could have taken your idea for repulsor technology. That would have been amazing. 🙂

I probably shouldn’t say that Star Wars wasn’t “intended” to make technological sense. That’s probably not completely accurate. It’s probably closer to the mark to say that Star Wars was always more about story and visuals. If something made technological sense; great. If it didn’t; it wasn’t really something they worried about.

After all, there are probably several dozen other ways to transport a dangerous prisoner other than freezing them in carbonite; but maybe not many as cool. : )

I can see that. Honestly, I love SWs for its lore and world building aspects. It was why I was disappointed at TFA and its lack of world building. It is embarrassing how they relegated the NC can do it. I’m not asking for PT levels, dear lord no. But something like ANH’s round table sequence would have sufficed in my view.

it is why I loved RO because that movie did a good job painting the galaxy in such a dark, chaotic situation. But hey, people come to franchises for different reasons and no one reason is more right over the other. It is all subjective. 🙂 And I am hopeful that TLK will touch into the political matters, as RJ has stated he isn’t against that stuff and even defended the PT.

“Though, at the same time the FO I argue are rather stupid in attempting to recreate another superweapon.”

I don’t know. It worked, didn’t it? If I were them, I’d have started working on another once immediately after they lost the first one. That’s why i never had an issue with a second Death Star in ROTJ. If you can compensate for and correct its weaknesses, it’s too good a weapon to turn down. Can you imagine the United States abandoning their atomic bomb program if the factory where the dang things were assembled was destroyed? No way. A devastating weapon is a devastating weapon. You lose one, you build another…if you can.

          • June 9, 2017 at 3:01 am
            Permalink

I agree that ROTJ second Death Star didn’t bother me. But really that is because of Palpatine and knowing he is an ego-driven man. As for a weakness for Starkiller base, I’ll give somewhat credit that Han and company needed to create an opening. But if I was to be honest, I kind of wished that the FO didn’t use a Superweapon. Something like a giant fleet would have been so much cooler. Heck, it would have been cooler to see this fleet just smash out of hyperspace and take out the NR by surprise. Plus, it would have made for an amazing excuse for a space battle.

But that is just me and you overall raised some valid points.

          • June 9, 2017 at 3:27 am
            Permalink

Well, again Starkiller Base as a concept didn’t really bother me. Other than the name…that was sort of corny. But I really think it should have survived the film. The trench battle at the end really was a bit too close to what we saw in ANH – and this is coming from someone who thinks most of the “TFA is the same as ANH” comments are sort of overblown.

But again, it’s survival would have added a pretty interesting story element. Had the FO destroyed the seat of the Republic’s government and evaded destruction, the FO would have been in a position to hold the galaxy hostage. It would have given an immense trump-card to what is still, from my understanding, a fringe organization.

          • June 9, 2017 at 4:39 am
            Permalink

If the movie subverted expectations like that, I would have been more forgiving. But really, Starkiller was the one element, among many, that just took me out of the movie. Because, contrary to some, I didn’t mind the ANH callbacks until Starkilelr base. And really, I found that element distracting with the overall goal of finding Luke which felt more like a side quest than anything tangible.

Honestly, I pass TFA as an incomplete movie that served as a TV pilot. Not the best in terms of moviemaking, but given Abrams and his sick obessession with his mystery box that is really the only way I can look at it. Still, Rian Johnson is an incredible director.

I’m biased, but really I think he is going to knock TLJ out of the park. So, I cannot feel too cynical, especially after RO. A flawed movie, but one I love and rekindele my love of the franchise movie wise. I state movie wise, because the NC has actually been quite solid. Particularly, the main SWs comic and even the books as of recent.

My guess is that they can splay their legs out in a wide stance as a result of the re-design, making them much more stable in the event of a direct attack.

They were called the Gorilla Walkers by the FX team, but if you look closely at the front legs, you’ll also see what I assume are tow cable cutters. It would make sense that there is also a function behind the design of the front feet, because that design is more likely to decrease stability otherwise.

Hell, I take you one further. In 1983 I initially thought RotJ was the death of Star Wars for the exact same reasons people use on TFA…plus teddy bears!

It was because I was just old enough (13) to have some critical thinking skills, but too young to see the world as anything but binary. It was either good or trash. RotJ is still middling on my personal stack rankings of the films, but it by no means killed the franchise for me.

There are so many things I love about Star Wars and other things that cause me to roll my eyes, but I will never get tired of the house George built.

I know everyone is getting tired of the “rehash” comments…but Lucasfilm could have easily avoided that by NOT having a walker assault scene in their middle episode. But then again it does “Lucas rhyme” with the other Trilogies, so I guess we’ll see. I hope these walkers wreck the Resistance. The First Order is not scary at all, at this point (Coruscant clone planet destruction not withstanding). They need to start winning.

I agree on the FO being a joke. Really, the NR’s destruction came out so left field that it was dumb. At least Alderaan’s destruction, while we didn’t see the people, better tied into the movie with the Force, Leia’s consequence.

And the fact that the NC has established the FO as a more credible threat than the movies is pitiful. I feel bad for those movie only fans. So yeah, the FO need a big victory. As for the rehash thing, while I believe that TLJ won’t be fully ESB; TFA did too much damage on that regard.

And LucasFilm can only blame themselves for how they structured it. And the whole rhyming scheme, my rebuttal is that if we are to treat SWs as poetry, it is bad poetry if it relies constantly on rhymes. I say this as someone who knows experienced poets and have seen them at serious poetry slams.

But I will give TFA some credit in trying to do new things. A bet buried underneath the derivativeness. But credit is where credit is do. Fingers crossed for TLJ.

Interesting. I assume this vape terminology you picked is some kind of insult. Which if an ad hominem is all you gave to contribute, it is a trite gesture. As for the “We get it” a deflection/ dismissal of any kind of analysis/ discussion. Which is pitiful. But I guess the modus operandi of SWs and many fandoms is mared in either-or. Either you love something or you hate it. No in-between. I will admit; I am a bit cynical when it comes to TFA. But really, that hasn’t stopped me from praising the other aspects of this franchise like the NC, RO and even TLJ which looks amazing.

So yeah, unless you have something else to contribute other than a snide remark, it is sticks and stones as far as I am concerned.

I’m digging the new Walkers. They have a similarity to the original, but still are different enough to hold their own unique identity. So yeah, I look forward to seeing them in action and used creatively. The royal guard for Snoke look really cool. I was hoping for at the very least a different color scheme if I am to be honest, but I do like how their design is.

My hope is that we will actually get to see them in action. An issue I always had with the OT, namely ROTJ, was that we never got to see the royal guard in action. Even though in Legends and the new canon, they are actually really kickass fighters. And I’d be lying if I didn’t want to see Luke go up against these guys. I always had an alternative ending where Luke redeems Vader and the two team up against the royal guards(kind of like Lego SWs TFA) and Vader sacrifices himself at the end. But I digress.

The Stormtrooper armor, as Hard Case mentioned, I dig because of the similarity with the Clone Trooper armor. Which I may irritate some, I always preferred the Clone trooper designs to Stormtroopers. So to see that influence come in is a nice touch. Much like that reference to using a clone army in TFA.

Overall, props to the design teams on this.

Resistance skimmers and bombers are pretty original as a concept. Don’t focus ONLY on the FO. They are imperial wannabes, so they reuse old designs improved in some way. It’s fine and coherent with the deep nature of what FO is.

in reference to our reality, think about how long an aircraft carrier or ling range bomber or even fighter jet model remains in active service. Quite a while even if you consider the amount of time that passed between RotJ an TFA. Even then we have seen an evolution on most on the basic designs that were introduced in the original trilogy.

Really, I think Canto Bight has a lot of interesting things to look at to a kind of 1930’s Elite Gothic sensibility and the new Guards IMO look closer to newer designs (Crimson Corsair, Gavian Death Gang, Queen Warriors in Screaming Citedal) more than the older designs like on the other royal gaurds.

Plus while I enjoy world expansion, I think it’s wise you don’t do it the point where it doesn’t resemble star wars and/or there are not things that should come off as natural evolutions, because it’s thematic to a generational family saga story and sometimes true to life. I think they can afford to do bigger expansions in other spin off material, but I think it’s important they stay within a certain scope with the saga films.

Um, you realise the entire look of star wars (OT) is ‘broke ass’. I didn’t become fan of something I would have to take out a small bank loan in order to dress up as.
Or are you more into the prequels aesthetic?
I wouldn’t blame you, they are so dense.

You saw a shitty 240p picture of the guard, so I don’t know how could possibly hope t pass judgement on its design. It looks more like concept art than a final picture, honestly.

I’m actually really looking forward to seeing a full or at least closer to full lineup of the First Order Praetorian Guards. My hunch (at least partially based on the now apparent fact that the three episode directors apparently have greater than a normal directors latitude as to the look and feel as well as the storyline itself) that there might be some connection to the supposed “Knights of Ren” as seen in the TFA Force Vision. Perhaps what we saw was this group in a different era and they either evolved or devolved into these new Red Guards. Neither the original group seen onscreen and what we know of this group, only Kylo Ren wields a lighsaber. The others have versions of “conventional” weapons. There are also just enough difference in their individual looks to mark them as individuals, even with similar color palettes, the subtle differences of costume along with the individualized weapons would be enough to tell them apart to the point where people will develop different affinities and fandom surrounding individuals in the group, which satisfies the merchandise sales requirements. If my hunch is correct, the big remaining mystery is Ren. What it it. It’s a noun for sure, but most likely a place or idea more than a person unless that person is some sort of larger than life historical character who’s name itself becomes synonymous with an idea and a set number of followers. Sort of like Jesus and his 12 apostles, Caesar and his triumvirate, Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, The Seven Samurai (keeping the Star Wars legacy), etc. The only hard and fast think we know about the Knights of Ren, beyond that they exist, is the fact that Snoke used the term Master of the Knights of Ren as and honorific applied to Kylo Ren in the discussion on whether his immersion in the Dark Side of the Force was sufficient to allow him to murder his own father, so clearly its of large signficance. A historical example is the fact that Julius Caesar’s name was Gaius Julius Caesar. At the time that was just a name. In the Latin of the time it meant “full head of hair” just like the technical meaning of the name Charles means “warrior” today. For generations after, people took the name Caesar as a title.

Regarding the new walkers, I agree that at first glance they look like the the old AT-ATs with some pieces glued on. I’d draw your attention to the legs, though, and the way they’re built. At first glance, it looks like the mechanical function of the legs are a repeat of the ESB walkers. With the bulk of the structure of the leg shifted significantly lower than on the older model, some new possibilities open up as far as the motion characteristics. They legs look like the knee joints pivot inward quite a bit more than previous walkers, which could make their movement appear much more spider or insect like than they appear in static images. Plus, they wouldn’t want to give away a lot of details this early before the release, hence displaying the walkers in a more familiar upright pose. In my mind, they’d be much more menacing, as the First Order appears generally in comparison to the overwhelming numbers of less individually lethal vehicles of the Empire. The Empire displayed their might through filling local space with big flotillas of ship and clogging the ground with very large numbers of less trained “cannon fodder” stormtroopers. The first order ships (albeit from the one we’ve seen) seem to be more efficiently designed in regards to placement, variety, and number of weapons. The First Order Stormtroopers appear better trained, better led, and individually braver, not being effective by apparently poorly designed or maintained landing craft infiltrating them onto the battlefield in small, easy to mow down en mass groups. A good deal of new canon material post ROTJ has mentioned or elaborated on the military philosophy of the Hux family and its insistence on excellence. Having a walker that crouches down to show a lower profile of the upper legs with heavily armored lower legs that move inward as the first part of the step before pivoting at the “hip” for the forward motion which would also allow it to crouch low and move side to side would be a frightening sight, while still providing both offensive and defense advantages as well. Plus it would be dumb if they just slapped some extra leg armor on and added a big single shot cannon up top so it just looked different enough to justify new toys without having any impact on the battlefield tactics that make the movie exciting. Disney/LFL already very often comes close to having blatant on-screen toys (pronounced MAZ Kan-AT-a) as it is to now have barely different main battle set pieces. They’re already showing little speeder ships who’s apparent only function is to kick up red dust (WHAAAAHH!?!?) from a white planet and get blown up. If everything is a toystore money grab, they ought to just show it all in the retail packaging on screen. For this reason, I think the new walkers will crouch down and fight more nimbly from a lower center of gravity (another defense against the dreaded Rebellion Tow Cable of Walker Death!)

AT-M6? So far all waker designations have been acronyms for their function (scout transport, armored cargo transport, etc) but unless I’m missing something I can’t think of what M6 could stand for. All terrain mark 6? I assumed these would be All terrain heavy transport or all terrain armored artilery or some such. Any guesses?

I really like how Snoke’s Guards feel like a lot of newer additions to the aesthetic like The Queen’s Warriors from Screaming Citadel, the armor on Gauvian Death Gang, or Sidon Ithano’s get-up.

That’s the obvious parallel that clearly everyone is making, but I think the “style” is actually closer to a lot of newer aesthetic. The other Royal Guards remind me something Trojan or Roman, or Centurion with those long robes, spears, and rather contoured helmet. These newer designs have something a little more contemporary military and maybe a heep of Samurai, in this case (but it’s hard to tell with the art being kind of blotchy and with the red extending outside the lines), but it kind of looks like he has layered-scaley armor on his shoulders/arms…
