Without giving to much away, the scene involves the one between Harrison Ford‘s swashbuckling Han Solo and Adam Driver‘s sinister Kylo Ren characters. Abrams shares his thoughts on what he thinks was going on in the mind of Kylo when Han attempts to tell him to turn his back on Snoke:

“Kylo Ren in this moment is actually being convinced to walk away from this,” Abrams says in the commentary, but ultimately, “Deep down, he’s gone too far.”

So is this going to be a full video commentary? Because if so, I’ll buy it. I’ve been waiting to purchase a copy till it has the features I want.

I would have liked to give the commentary a listen, the insight into the characters’ thought processes is quite fascinating. I wish the first release had more features packed with it, but I’m going to try my hardest not to double dip because this marketing practice doesn’t really sit right with me. Plus I don’t own a 3D television and don’t currently plan to, so it’s worth even less to me.

You’re right, and the more people who buy into this, the more they’ll rip us off in the future.

No one is forcing you to buy anything and if your collector addiction can’t hold out, that’s on you.

Or maybe they should just include all of the extras on the original release and not rip-off their dedicated fans. Sounds better to me, personally.

I don’t consider that a rip off b/c I know exactly what I am buying. The information from the commentary will be on the internet, so there is no reason for me to buy it.

I consider it a ripoff. They intentionally held back on features so that they could wait a few months a rerelease the movie, knowing that we wouldn’t have enough patience to wait 6 months to get the full Blu-ray release.

Well I’ve learned my lesson. I won’t purchase the first disc for ep8 just the download then wait for the ultimate cut. Disney is following Lucas with all his set releases. they are taking advantage of fans to get as much as possible. I just got a kodi so I’ll see it for free!! there Disney up yours!

Pretty sure we went through this when the 3D edition was announced. The films under Lucas where released, at their closest, 2 years apart. 6 months after swearing up and down that nothing was being held back is new territory and feels awfully crass.

I agree. Though, to be fair, they actually did say that they would be releasing a 3D version later in the year.

At least the re-releases used to be years apart. I’m fine with that. But I’m betting most, if not all the content on this one could have been released a few months ago if they had wanted to.

“He’s gone too far” so he can’t be redeemed? Hopefully so

I think he means that he’s gone so far down the dark path that he’s in denial of the truth about Snoke. It’s more that he’s not letting himself think it’s possible to be redeemed, not that he can’t be. I personally want to see him and Rey switch places (only temporarily for Rey, of course), to shake things up a bit.

First they’ll have to convince us how we can possibly root for a guy who killed off everyone’s childhood hero, Han Solo.

Doesn’t bother me, he was never my childhood hero in Star Wars – lol

Well..his death was a stab in the heart for me, but still..never was a big Han Solo fan.

JJ did say in “The Secrets of the Force Awakens” that this movie isn’t just about the light side of the force awakening in a young woman but also the dark side awakening in a young man….

I don’t want to see Kylo Ren redeemed. Vader’s turn back to the light side needed to be a one-off. Let’s not start a tradition of seeing every bad guy get lured back to the good side. While Ren idolizes Vader, he’s not Vader and his story should be different. He also killed Han Solo; a move I found necessary to his story, but one that would to be difficult to overcome. Even if the character were to be redeemed, the audience would probably never be able to forgive him.

This was just the beginning..keep his path to the dark side GOING and keep it going strong. Don’t redeem his ass cause then he’s just another Anakin/Vader..make him an iconic villain to be reckoned with..one that will show our new trio the consequences of war! *BATTLE CRY!!* Vader was weak and foolish..he was seduced to the light because his love for his son won him over..Kylo doesn’t give two shits about his family..let him have no weaknesses..BRING BACK THE SITH! LONG LIVE THE DARK SIDE! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/85d3dcb1f88f58bdf11d526e06ef86f56b40379cb4904fed7ea7ff3c626583b4.jpg

Have to agree with the sentiment – Kylo HAS to stay fallen. Redemption would cheapen whatever success “that” scene had.

Although I totally agree with this, I think back to how Anakin slaughtered a bunch of jedi and younglings, then tortured his daughter, blew up her planet, chopped off his son’s hand, but in the end all was forgiven because he killed the emperor.
I could totally see if he sacrifices himself for the lightside Kylo could be redeemed for killing his dad and whatever jedi he took out

My interpretation of this scene has evolved over time. I first saw it as Kylo truly being swayed back to the light by his father, then deciding at the last minute to stay with the dark side. Over time, I started to feel that Kylo was just playing with Han to get him closer, always intending to kill him. I guess my first instinct was right.

What is interesting to me is comparing this scene to Episode 6. What does it say that in the OT the father was redeemed by his son, but in TFA, the father was unable to redeem his son?

It says that they tried, kinda unsuccessfully, to jam both SW and ESB into a single movie?

      • October 18, 2016 at 6:44 pm

I don’t think so. In the OT, we have three movies that focus, eventually, on the redemption of the father. If TFA was the end of Kylo’s story, I would say you were right, but it is really just the beginning. Ultimately, it will depend on what they do with Kylo in the next two movies. If his character goes through a lot and changes a lot, Kylo killing his father will be seen as just one event in longer story.

I personally thought that the scene would have been even more powerful if we would have seen them interact with each other before that fateful moment. Maybe during the battle of Taccodonna, they fight and Kylo gets the upper hand but couldn’t bring himself to kill his father. They then would meet again like they do in the film and just when you think he is about to turn back to the light, he has flashes back to all of the Jedi he killed and his betrayal of Luke and makes the choice of doubling down on the darkside. I remember initially being really underwhelmed by this scene but I will admit that it has gotten a little better in subsequent viewings.

Worst scene of the movie, the death of has solo has no meaning or depth , dying at the hands of a chilidish teen just because is evil to kill your father and that grants you safe passage to the dark side,.. it sux!!
