UPDATE! J.J. Abrams Reveals 2 Shots Which Were Added Later to the Iconic Duel at the End of The Force Awakens and More on Finn and Rey

ILM the force awakens

One of the best new features from the upcoming relase of The Force Awakens four-disc 3D collector’s edition Blu-ray, is definitely J.J. Abrams’ audio commentary. To give you a taste of what to expect from the highly anticipated release on November 15, Yahoo Movies posted new exclusive clip from the Blu-ray. Check it out…

In the clip below J.J. Abrams reveals some interesting details about the climatic lightsaber duel between Kylo Ren and Rey in the woods of Starkiller base. Surprisingly one of the shots was actually suggested by Selma director Ava DuVernay.

From Yahoo:

“I showed an early cut to my friend Ava DuVernay, and she had a bunch of great suggestions. One of them was she really wanted to see Daisy, in her attack on Ren, have one really cool moment,” says Abrams before pointing out a closeup of Ridley about to deliver a decisive blow to her rival.

“Boom! It’s a little thing but it really connects you to her intensity.”

Rey's Awakening

Yahoo also revealed that the addition of this brief shot happened during the eight-week hiatus that happened during principal photography due to Harrison Ford’s injury. Another addition to that sequence (this time due to reshoots) was the moment when Rey taps into the Force, before she counter attacks and almost kills Ren.

Abrams explains that the the original cut didn’t have the extended moment of self-reflection. But he decided he needed to add a beat, where Rey would “take this moment of hearing the Force and thinking about what Maz had told her about closing her eyes and letting it in. And so she has this incredibly internal moment that is extended in movie time where she basically feels it, accepts it, and is now ready to kick his ass.”

UPDATE!

Also IGN posted another clip from the special features of the 3D Blu-ray, where J.J. Abrams reveals what was the initial plan for the scene where Finn and Rey meet each other for the first time.

          Really???

They were running away from everyone when this guy attacks them, has critically injured her friend and is trying to kill them both.
What exactly would your idea of “defense” consist of? Asking if he wants to build a snowman? Kylo Ren is trying to kill her, has already subjected her to mental torture after kidnapping her and she is fighting back. That’s pretty much defense right there.

She didn’t seek him out. She was attacked, fought back. If someone throws a punch at me and I am “now ready to kick their ass”, that’s still defense. I didn’t start the fight.

Yeah, at that point, after swinging a lightsaber at her head a few dozen times, he reaches out. Until then, he was trying to kill or at least capture her.

So let me clarify: if he was just trying to capture her or maybe maim her, should she not have fought back in defense?

I agree with some of your points but I also disagree with some of them :p You’re too harsh on Rey’s agressiveness I think. She has not been educated in the jedi way by anyone therefore she can not try to uphold the ideals of non agression. I think her face shows anger during the last part of the duel and calls back to Anakin/vader in Ep 3 She could have killed him before the ground split but she decides not to do it therefore she does what Luke does in episode 6 and lets her enemy live. Remember that Anakin also attacked dooku first or that Obi Wan went full agression on Darth Maul, more trained jedi make the same mistakes (even iif in these cases the movie shows it is a disadvantage). Finn ‘beating’ kylo is exagerated. He gets in 1 lucky hit because Kylo is being cocky and after that kylo just owns him. Anyhow I like reading those opinions! Discussing Star Wars is one of the most fun things to do :3

Yeah, Kylo was toying with Finn and it was his arrogance that led to that lucky hit. After that, Kylo got serious and Finn got owned.

Agreed. Jedi are not INVINCIBLE —- hell they sometimes even get killed by Clone Troopers according to the Prequels. It’s realistic that Finn could get in “one good hit” before Kylo’s dark side rage kicked in and he OWNED Finn with ease.

Re: ” Kylo was toying with Finn ”
Agree, I think that it was a bit reminiscent of Vader mostly toying w/Luke in Empire. Once Luke/Finn scored a lucky hit, their angered opponent put a stop to the fight very decisively.

You know what other movie doesn’t have much of a story or plot and is just kind of a series of scenes?

          The Empire Strikes Back.

What is the story? Luke trains to be a Jedi while Vader chases Han and Leia until it’s time for a lightsaber fight at the end.

And it’s awesome. It’s the best SW movie and one of the best overall ever. Because of the characters and the scenes. The actual story of the movie is flimsy in the traditional sense, but it works.

          Just like The Force Awakens.

It’s funny how a movie that I’m told is a shot for shot remake of “A New Hope” now has “no story”.
This is the underlying flaw with nearly every criticism of TFA. And I see it over and over again. They need to have it both ways in order to pull it off.

That makes no sense. You could literally say that about anyone if you look at their UNFINISHED work. You have to take into account what’s actually there.

Audiences did like Star Trek 2009. That much is pretty universally known.

But judging from the widespread positive reactions to TFA, I think it’s safe to say most people think he got it right.

I might also add that the complaints for the star trek films (save for into darkness, i think criticism on that one is warrented) you could attach that supposed fanboy ire to every marvel film, every christopher nolan film, pretty much anything that breaks 1 billion.

Those movies were critically acclaimed, and so was The Force Awakens. Obviously the films were more than financial successes, they were seen as well-made films by a lot of people. You have to admit..Rey being able to use a Jedi mind trick (which is not an easy thing to do) and beating someone who is skilled in the force in a duel simply because she “let the force in” doesn’t make much sense, and in my opinion, sort of takes away the aspect of having to train and earn the strength the force grants. To me having Rey be that skillful and winning said duel was the equivalent of say having Luke (in ANH) a simple moister farmer, going up against Vader and winning simply because he “let the force in.” https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/dbcb220beb38813c2ec34b4bab577e7cc64475da04a34da5d59b0610df96bed0.gif

No, but Luke let the Force in and destroyed the DS or a 10yr old boy that can win a podrace that no human has won or maneuver a damage fighter through the interior of a starship.

Rey was already skillful with a weapon, why couldn’t the Force enhance her abilities like it did with the young Skywalkers?

          • October 19, 2016 at 11:25 pm

Well because it has been stated the the force can give an individual a sense of the future and guidance. The force is the only reason why Anakin was the only human to participate in a podrace and survive. And the guidance of the force gave him enough instinct to survive separatist gun fire in the space battle (he is also the chosen one). Luke, like his father had experience with flying before and was able to shoot wamprats for target practice which are very small in comparison to the exhaust port on the DS, all this presumably with the aid of the force. Neither Anakin or Luke were born with the skills of an already trained Jedi, and neither would be able to hold their own in a duel with a Jedi weapon. This was something they trained and earned. Fending off other scavengers and criminals with a stick is not the same as holding a weapon Jedi and Sith train endlessly to weild while fighting someone who’s experienced with the art.

Ah, but Luke was also able to reflect blaster shots from the remote on his first training session.

Kylo, was not a master, he didn’t even finish his training yet. Rey overpowered him with the guidance of the Force because she is stronger with the Force. She probably danced with the darkside at that moment too just like Luke did with Vader in RotJ and Luke was no where near Vaders skill and yet he manage to overpower him.

Him reflecting blaster bolts (under the guidance of Obi Wan) still applies to what I had said about the force giving an individual a sense of the future and instincts. That’s basic. Kylo is not a master yes, but he knows his way enough to slaughter a whole Jedi temple. And Luke danced with the dark side yes, but with yoda’s training he knew what the dark side was and to resist the temptation. How does Rey know how to do such a thing? If anything the dark side can just be (to her) the “force calling..” so how did she know not to embrace it? And in ROTJ, Vader was old..and Luke was a fully established Knight..I think he was stronger than his father at that point. The emperor saw it.

Whatever you think may be the rules of theForce, the canon continues to evolve beyond what was established in the OT, first with midiclorians, and most recently in the comics, television shows and films. Relax and enjoy. Star Wars worldbuilding won’t stand up to Tolkien levels of scrutiny no matter how much you hope it will.

Don’t get me wrong..I’m enjoying the new content..but to me it still has its flaws that could’ve easily been avoided if they went a different route for the ST. Starting with a newbie again to me wasn’t a very good idea simply because it raises these questions.

About the lightsaber duel, I don´t know, I have some sense that Kylo (yet wounded and weak) didn´t give his ultimate efforts against Rey for an obscured motive. I don´t know, I´m inclined to say he knows her. “From a certain point of view”.

But he has no training in the Force, just like Rey. She was a proficient fighter to begin with so why couldn’t that be the same for her? I don’t think Kylo is a great fighter. He hasn’t shown it. He has greater Force abilities (Force throw, Force freeze, etc.) and that’s how he was able to capture Rey to begin with, but his swordsmanship skill are questionable.

And do we know for sure that Kylo slaughtered Luke’s academy? All I remember is that Han said a student slaughter them all. It’s been implied its him but do we know for sure?

Right, but flying or racing isn’t the same as fighting with a lightsaber. I haven’t been opposed to the idea that Rey, a girl who presumably has never flown a ship in her life was able to fly the Falcon like a pro..that I can live with because it’s been done before with Anakin/Luke. And though Ben slaughtering Luke’s Jedi wasn’t explicitly said, it was heavily implied simply because Han mentioned that one boy turned against him and destroyed it all..the only boy Luke took in was Ben.

Lightsabers are only a weapon. You don’t need to be a Jedi or Sith to use one. Don’t forget General Grevious wasn’t a Force user and he could still use them. Its basically a tool to fight with as a ship is a tool to fly. If she already knew how to fight with a staff (not too different than a sword – parry/strike/jab) I don’t see the difference.

So if Kylo was the only boy, what did he destroy/slaughter? Were the only other students female and aliens?

            Good conversation btw 🙂

I dont know. I guess i just find it hard to accept certain things be more concrete when it comes to her affinity for the force when this is the same series that had Luke and Han know where the main control room was to the Death Star, even though both men had absolutely no knowledge of where it might be, seeing as how they both looked surprised when they bumped into it on the way to Alderraan.

There is a reason Rey was able to use The Force like that, we just don’t know what it is yet.

And she beat Kylo after he was shot by Chewie’s bow (which sent troopers FLYING remember?) and after he was hit by Finn. I don’t see any issue with it. She already showed she knows how to fight and Kylo’s training itself is not complete.

Re: “he’s been trained by first luke”
Exactly – Kylo was trained, according to the hints in the books & timeline established, for quite a LONG TIME with Luke frigging Skywalker.

            And Rey was NOT TRAINED.

Luke had apparently completed his training, at least he was not trained any further by Yoda when he returned & was told – “Your training is complete” in MUCH LESS TIME than Kylo spent with Luke….and Luke was 1st toyed with by Vader & then when he scored a hit & pissed him off – was immediately defeated.
            I really had a tough time with Rey’s insta-Jedi just-add-moment-of-eyes-closed metamorphosis.

Note: Yes, we can imagine that perhaps she did receive *some* minimal training – & somehow forgot/memory wiped …but even then, she was VERY young when dropped off & can’t imagine any hardcore Jedi/lightsaber training had been mastered to adult Kylo’s level.

Rey – without training beating Kylo as soundly as she did was just too unbelievable.

It’s still possible that Rey was taught some Jedi lessons by her parents who were Lukes students. They drop her off on Jakku while they go off to battle kylo and get killed, hence never coming back.

The only way I can imagine Rey being as powerful as she is, is NOT her parents being Luke’s students…but one of her PARENTS being Luke.

It ties in nicely to our own world’s theological concept of “becoming like a child”. Maybe the hardest part about using the Force is letting go of your own will and aligning your will with the Force. Rey was able to do that.

Love the duel in the snowy forest and particularly that close up with the sabers reflected in their eyes. I do think they weren’t clear enough about the characters however: Why was Ben punching himself, for example (you can explain it, but the film does not). Goes for other sequences as well. My biggest question remains, how did Finn know Rey was taken to the base from Takodana? And, secondly, Why did Kylo bother to travel to the base everytime he had to call Snoke?

      Why was Ben punching himself?

He was drawing strength — or at least the illusion of strength — from the pain of his bowcaster wound. I thought the movie did an adequate job of nonverbally explaining this.

I have a theory: What if balance in the Force is literal? In other words, when the Jedi are strong in numbers (PT era) the dark side of the Force begins to congregate either in numbers or in one person (Palpatine/Vader).

Once the Jedi were wiped out, the Force began congregating again in one person (Luke) and after RotJ he began increasing the number of light-side users. This led the Dark side to congregate again in one user or group of users (Knights of Ren, Snoke, etc.).

Now that the Jedi are pretty much wiped out again (we think), the light side of the Force is once again congregating in one person (Rey). Here’s the possible twist this time, maybe the dark side isn’t just present in a few people like the Sith. Maybe Snoke and Kylo have a whole army of dark-side users they’ve been training in the shadows.

Palpatine kept his Force abilities under wraps and the Empire was only loosely tied to the Sith. But it failed in just 20 years. What if the First Order is “getting back to its roots” and more closely allying itself with the dark side of the Force? Recreating the Sith Empire or something like it.

This would explain why Rey is so strong in the Force. She’s one of a handful of light-side users up against hundreds or thousands of dark side users. That’s just a theory anyway.

My other thought is that maybe the reason she’s so strong in the Force is because she’s so ignorant of it. She doesn’t have her ego or pride getting in the way of the Force molding her will to its will. This ties into the theological concept in our own world of “becoming like a child” and submitting to God’s will.

Luke was petulant in that didn’t listen to what his master told him to do, which was to stay and learn, not run off and fight. Rey took advantage of Kylo’s insecurity about being under Snoke’s wing. She ‘let it in’, exactly what Luke didn’t get at that point in ESB:

      In Jedi Master Yoda’s words:
“You will know know, when you are calm and at peace.”

Yoda warned him before he left: “Remember your failure at the cave”

Luke went and did exactly what he did in the cave, and it cost him. He brought a lightsaber and fear and anger to his confrontation with a Sith Lord, and he lost his arm. Simple as that.

You’re right. That’s exactly what Luke should have done. How did Luke defeat the Emperor? Not by awesome lightsaber skills or force powers. He gave up. He trusted the Force. Only then was Vader able to feel the light side of the Force again and throw the Emperor into the reactor.

That’s…not what happens in that sequence at all. Not even a little. He makes a conscious decision not to kill his father, not to walk further down that path. He doesn’t open himself to the Force to save himself. The Force, similarly, has NOTHING to do with Vader’s decision either. He sees his son in agony, being tortured to death at the hands of this twisted, evil being – THAT’S what wakes up the last remaining little bit of Anakin and spurs him into action.
