New Rogue One Planet Name Revealed?
Two days ago an image with several Rogue One Black Series figures was posted on Instagram. It included several familiar characters like Kylo Ren, Rey and Jyn Erso, but also had a first look at the K-2SO, Cassian Andor and Death Trooper figures. The Cassian Andor figure seems to feature the name of a yet unknown planet on its packaging that might or might not play an important role in the movie. Read on for the full details…
POTENTIAL SPOILERS
Captain Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, is one of the main leads in Rogue One. What we know about his character so far is that he’s an intelligence officer with a great deal of combat experience. He’s the quiet type, and he was stationed at Yavin IV. He was assigned to keep an eye on Jyn Erso during their mission to steal the Death Star plans.
Here’s the image that was posted by Instagram user jedi_skywalkerr (it was later removed):
As you can see next to Cassian’s name we have the name of the planet Eadu. That’s a common Hasbro practice to include the name of the planet next to the character’s name and the specific outfit he wears for that location. This is made to distinguish different toys of the same character. For example we have a Black Series figure with Finn as a stormtrooper and a Black Series figure with his Jakku outfit. The latter is named “Finn (JAKKU)”.
What’s interesting is that this figure’s outfit matches with the one Cassian wears at the planet Jedha (image above). Why are we certain this is Jedha? Well, we already know that the planet Jedha was the home of spiritual warrior-monk and rebel Chirrut Îmwe. The planet was considered a spiritual home of the Jedi. (via Wiki)
The image above was revealed at Celebration Europe. If you connect the dots with the following two images, you will most likely come to the conclusion that this is indeed Jedha:
Now comes the question why the toy with Cassian’s outfit that he wears at Jedha bears the name of another planet? The simplest explanation is that perhaps Eadu is the name of the city where we see (from the teaser and the BTS footage) the action sequence between Jyn, Cassian and the stormtroopers. From what we know and from what we’ve seen, it appears that Cassian and Jyn went to Jedha to recruit Chirrut. It’s very possible that we will see something similar to the Magnificent Seven recruiting process in this movie. (Remember that Zack Snyder had pitched a Seven Samurai idea to Kathleen Kennedy long ago).
So if they are on Jedha trying to recruit Chirrut, perhaps they were on another planet before that trying to do the same with another potential candidate (perhaps one of the alien creatures, Pao and Bistan?). Cassian’s outfit seems more suited for a much colder planet. From what we’ve seen Jedha very much resembles Tatooine and Jakku, but looks more populated. Cassian’s outfit resembles the one Han Solo wore on Hoth. So another possibility is that Eadu is the name of a planet that has a much colder and perhaps snowy climate. Maybe they were on that planet before they got to Jedha, hence the mismatched outfit?
A very good bet is that the planet Eadu is the one we’ve seen with the Death Troopers holding the stormtrooper doll from the EW’s coverage (image above). This scenery was shot in Iceland. You can’t mistake that unique black soil. You probably remember our report from September 2015 where we shared some images from the filming location in Iceland. Local sites reported that Mads Mikkelsen was spotted in Iceland so he will definitely be involved in that scene.
The Icelandic climate is much cooler and it’s a much better match with Cassian’s outfit from the figure. Could this be Eadu? Who knows. It seems like a good bet since it’s the only scenery that doesn’t match with what we’ve seen from the officially revealed planets. I guess we will find out soon enough.
Of course there is another, not so fancy possibility, which will make this whole article pointless and embarrassing. EADU could be an abbreviation of something. For example the U could stand for Uniform and the whole name to be just an abbreviation for the type of uniform Cassian is wearing on Jedha. Still, I’ve never seen previous Black Series figures use such abbreviation.
From all the Rogue One footage we’ve seen so far, we’ve seen three officially confirmed planets – Jedha, Yavin IV, and Scarif. We already discussed Jedha above, and Yavin IV doesn’t need an introduction.
Scarif is the third officially confirmed planet in Rogue One, where the climax of the movie will probably take place. Here’s Wookieepedia’s curious entry on Scarif:
Scarif was a secluded and tropical planet used by the Galactic Empire to house the construction of the first Death Star, an armored battle station capable of destroying entire worlds. The Empire built a major military installation on Scarif and excavated large swaths of land in order to build ships and supply the Death Star. An orbiting docking station housed several Imperial Star Destroyers. The planet was protected by an impenetrable deflector shield that enveloped the entire world.
The docking station with the several Star Destroyers thing sounds like a good opportunity for a space battle, something that we haven’t seen in any of the Rogue One footage so far. And one could only wonder if we’re going to get another mission for deactivating a shield in Star Wars.
If there is another planet part of the plot we will most likely see glimpses of her in the full trailer. We’ve tried to find a planet on the Star Wars galaxy map that has the name Eadu, but with no luck. The closest we got was Eriadu, the home planet of Grand Moff Tarkin and his family. We’ve all heard the rumors of Tarkin’s appearance in Rogue One which makes perfect sense (and the BTS footage showed a character that had a huge resemblance with him), but this is most likely a coincidence.
Still, Eadu not appearing on the current canon galaxy map doesn’t mean that it does not exist. As you see below the planets Jedha and Scarif have not been added as well. This will probably happen in the non distant future and we will keep you updated if new information is obtained.
And lastly, speaking of Cassian, here’s an image with him and Bistan (aka Space Monkey) shared by the StarWarsMovies Instagram account that you might have missed. Actually this photo is not new as many sites are claiming. It was released on June 23 together with the other Rogue One photos by EW. For some reason the photo is no longer on their site, but you can see it HERE reported by the Playlist.
So what do you think? Do you think Eadu is a new planet’s name or is it a name of a specific location or city? Or neither of those? What if it’s just a boring abbreviation? Regarding the shield — I would imagine that’s why they recruit imperial cargo pilot Bodhi Rook. He can sneak the team past the shield.
The point about the mismatched clothing actually makes a ton of sense. i’m guessing Cassian and Jyn were on Eadu before they went to Scarif.
Might as well call the planet- Iceland. Another bland planet in the tradition of anything in The Force Awakens.
Sounds like you should apply for a job at LucasFilm in their filming location spotting department.
He might actually do a better job than the current staff.
I long for the days of George Lucas when there were real exotic locations.
The Maldives not real or exotic enough for you?
That’s earthly, not extra terrestrial. You guys are slow.
Not for a planet in a galaxy that is far, far away…
Not EVERY planet has to look extremely exotic.
Why not?
You mean bluescreen sets? Yeah, real exotic.
All those sets were actually miniature real buildings.
I mean… that’s not true in all cases. They used miniature elements, but when it came to actually filming actors and having them interact with the environment, it was blue/greenscreen elements driving it.
Don’t get me wrong, I want VIII and IX to be more exotic and challenge the limits of what “real” environments can provide, but the way Lucas overused bluescreen sets in Episodes II and III, in particular, was ridiculous.
That was probably annoying for the actors, but the result doesn’t affect us at all, we don’t see the blue screen, we see it like the director envisioned it. I don’t see why you would bring up blue screen as if you could see them. Now films like Force Awakens have a lot of green screens and a crapload of CGI too but nobody brings it out. For example, all the space fightings was garbage to me, it looked like a videogame. And it doesn’t take basic physics into account. When the Falcon crashes on the snow after a lightspeed dive, it should have been shattered in a billion pieces. But no, it was just an awful cgi model. Just like those bad videogames where cars can bump into eachother at high spedd and remain intac without a single scratch. It can pass for a videogame, not for a movie, unless it’s a stupid pop corn flick.
Even still, that doesn’t even come close to the death-defying feats that Anakin and Obi-Wan do in Episode II during the Coruscant chase. They fall thousands of stories and land perfectly on a blindingly fast speeder. Come on, man!
But no seriously, it does matter as far as the actors are concerned. The way they interact with the environment does play a role. You just might not notice it on surface-level. Look at how Obi-Wan interacts with General Grievous vs how Frodo and Sam interact with Gollum in LOTR. Big difference and I think you can very much tell.
I don’t like the prequels, you don’t have to convince me about it, but I still recognized that Lucas worked on them a lot and he had new original stories and tried hard to make it perfectly fit to the original trilogy. Put aside all the flaws of the prequels, they’re still Star Wars movies, nobody ever questioned that. Force Awakens on the other hand isn’t a Star Wars movie because it doesn’t look like it, it is soulless, it’s stupid, it’s a dumb rehash with 1 dimensional useless characters that nobody cares about except some teenage girls on tumblr.
Well, I care and I’m not a “dumb teenage girl on tumblr.” It’s fine to criticize TFA if you’re not a fan. No one is forcing you to like it, but to demean those who do is a little ridiculous.
Ad hominem much?
I’m the one who takes the most of ad hominem attacks on this board
Prolly cuz you bring it on yourself, pal. People have opinions and you can dispute them without calling them “dumb” or “slow.”
Why do you think that is?
Jeez, you mean they can’t mix CGI with with real locations like every other science fiction movie seems able to do to make it look like someplace not on Earth?
I would if I could. These new planets are dull, dull, dull. Why does other science fiction movies have more interesting looking planets than the new Star Wars? Even Star Trek Beyond looked better than anything with these new Star Wars movies.
Bland???
Iceland must be one of the most geographic diverse countries in the world with its glaciers, volcanoes, moss covered lava fields, beaches, etc.
I never get tired of seeing the photo shots of the death troopers against the Icelandic tundra. Very much looking forward to see this planet in the movie.
I think what he means is a planet with a forest consisting of huge mushrooms and roots, or a planet with endless grasslads with weird rock formations in it or a planet where all plants have blue leaves and white wood or something like that. A planet where you don’t say: ah this looks like “random location on earth”.
Unlike the original trilogy, in which we got the desert, the forest, and Antarctica. But they, it’s only a problem when the new movies do it.
Now tell me, do you think that was because GL wanted it that way or because they didn’t have the same possibilities back then? (hint: look at the PT Order 66 montage for answers). A mixture (like enhacing real landscapes) would be the way to go imo.
Right on the money, my friend..
Sure he did. It’s called matte paintings and sound stage sets. Dagobah was a sound stage set and they could of designed it any way he wanted but he went with a swamp.
in the Order 66 montage, only two planets out of the 7 or 8 scenes where ‘exotic’, the rest could be found on Earth.
Uh, what version of RotS did you watch? Any of these scenes looked more impressive, no matter how ‘Earthly’ you think they are, than some planet that looks like a barren tundra in Iceland.. Just sayin’. Plus Lucas had limited resources with OT, so no, he couldn’t design it anyway he wanted..
No, they looked really fake.
GL had limited resources on ANH, but ESB and RotJ his budget was so much bigger. So instead of making fake vegetation that looked earthly for Dagobah, he couldn’t make fake vegetation that looked more alien?
Cloud City was exotic looking and that was all sound stages and matte paintings.
Yeah on dagobah like sets. you can only shoot closeups. try building sets that can be filmed from above. sets have their use for closeup scenes and are then extended digitally. a mattepainting might work for stillframes where the camera doesnt move and there is no such thing as rain or wind or moving objects. if you look at the mattepaintings in an HD version of the OT you can literally see the brushstrokes in the mattpaiting. they might have worked on a bad 80s cinemascreen but today they look faker than CGI.
The dagobah swamp is exotic. Its not like you see Dagobah and say: oh it looks like in […].
If you look at the PT we have Naboo with it’s huge renaissance cities that are too huge to be from earth and have a destinct architecture. We get the underwaterworld of gunga city. We get a global city planet with coruscant. Giant termite hills with geonosis. A planet with massive sinkholes aka utapau. a planet completely covered in water with futuristic cities on them aka Kamino. 3 unknown planets in the montage. Kashyyk with its towering trees.the burning planet of mustafar. These are all examples of planets that are a lot different than anything we find on earth. with good compositing and moderate use of CGI to create alien elements such as rocks or weird plant formations you could combine real footage and spice it up a bit,
That’s because they didn’t have the money, resources, or technology for the OT in the mid-70s to mid-80s.. Duh!
So? If they weren’t bland then, why are they only bland now?
To be fair:
a) the possibilities are endless now with new technology, they weren’t endless back in the time of the OT
b) We’ve seen these planets in the OT – why not try something new?
Fair enough.
Overly dependent on CGI, looking like some video game.
For me a practical set, with its architecture and inhabitants, and the right composition would make a chosen planet interesting.
How the hell is this exciting? I want to see something like it belongs in a galaxy far, far away..
Like what?
The guys at Lucasfilm are paid very good to come up with that. If they can’t do it, they should be replaced with more creative people, I’m sure they exist, it’s the recruitment process that is problematic.
Greenland would probably be more on point. 😉
Exactly, I can’t believe they made Luke Skywalker was just sitting on a Irish Island all these years. That helicopter shot was AWFUL, very bad cinematography, I felt like I was watching live news reporting.
Other movies somehow can combine real world locations with cgi to make planets and alien environments look otherworldly, but these new Star Wars movies apparently can not? What gives?
I don’t think it’s a matter of not being able to pull it off. They have the best production designers and CG artist in the industry at their disposal. Using real environments grounds the movie. None of the OT planets looked otherworldly and I think that’s the best approach for Star Wars.
Felucia was awesome because it was nothing like any other planet in a Star Wars movie. Hopefully one of the sequels or anthologies will showcase another crazy imaginative planet too that again breaks the meta of the types of planets in the galaxy. No I don’t want to see too many worlds that are pure fantasy like that but one or two more would be cool to see someday.
Felucia (in my opinion, of course) is a cool idea that was pulled off poorly. But with today’s technology, i think they could actually make it look like less of a terrible CGI/model monstrosity.
Sorry, this just doesn’t capture the imagination-
Maybe the Iceland scenes are actually the decimated parts of Scarif. That kind of contrast between a beautiful tropical landscape and black soil could work quite well.
That’s what I’m thinking.
I really hope that planet isn’t called Eadu because that’s TOO close to Eriadu. If that planet name IS accurate then it’d be a huge fumble because in case they should have just gone with Tarkin’s homeworld… It would be cool to see that planet on the big screen but it’s not cool to see one lazily named Eado.
Dantooine
Tatooine
Planets have similar named all the time in the Star Wars universe.
there’s also Zeitooine. lol
Jimmy Smits just confirmed a cameo/small part. http://makingstarwars.net/2016/08/jimmy-smits-confirms-his-evolvement-in-rogue-one-a-star-wars-story/
FUCK YES

Yavin 4 isn’t a planet. Yavin is the planet and Yavin 4 is it’s 4th largest satellite moon.
You tell’em.
Diego Luna As Cassian looks like the Obi Wan Action Figure from 2002 in Snow or cold weather Gear from Power of the Jedi – coool!

Maybe it exists in google
In the BTS sizzler, we see a child perform a jump in what is clearly an Icelandic location. Perhaps this is a flashback scene of a young Jyn Erso and it’s her home planet.
