J.J. Abrams Would Like to See a Spin-Off Movie About the Knights of Ren!

Star-Wars-Rey-Force-Vision-Knights-Ren

While promoting the latest chapter in the new Star Trek movies, director J.J. Abrams briefly spoke with Collider about which Star Wars story he would like to see as a spin-off movie…

J.J. Abrams directed the first two Star Trek movies which rebooted the franchise 7 years ago. Abrams couldn’t direct the third movie because of his decision to helm Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he does serve as a producer of the franchise’s third film since the reboot.

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters this week and Abrams has been doing the rounds promoting the movie. Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Abrams revealed what he would like to see in a future Star Wars spin-off movie:

“I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who’s running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons. There isn’t something that I’d love to see—I guess the one thing I would say is there’s a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell.”

Knights of Ren

This sounds like a really good idea. We caught a quick glimpse of the Knights of Ren during Rey’s Force vision in The Force Awakens. Very little is known about this dark side organization. We know that they operated under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke and that Kylo Ren was a member of the mysterious group.

There is also a group called “The Acolytes of the Beyond” in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy that many have speculated are a sort of precurser to the group.  But beyond Snoke, Kylo, and some speculation, we don’t have much else to go on concerning the Knights of Ren.

Here’s Wookieepedia’s entry on them:

The Knights of Ren included Kylo Ren, whom Supreme Leader Snoke, the leader of these forces of darkness, referred to as a master of the Knights of Ren. As a member of the Knights of Ren, Kylo was not part of the formal hierarchy of the First Order but nonetheless operated with freedom among the military command, who tolerated his presence with some hesitation as his agenda trumped their own. Kylo wore a black and silver combat helmet based on the battle gear worn by the Knights of Ren.

The Knights of Ren operated in the decades following the Galactic Civil War. They were under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke, who used them as a tool of the dark side of the Force alongside the First Order. The Knights of Ren slew Luke Skywalker’s generation of Jedi. Rey, a Force-sensitive scavenger who hailed from Jakku, saw the Knights of Ren in a vision.

We probably will get more answers on this mysterious organization in Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII. Do you like J.J’s idea on this? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

That wouldn’t be a bad show. But I really want to see the Fall of Ben Solo in Animated form.

Yeah I would like to see a Clone Wars stye animation for the period between RotJ and TFA. Rebels is filling in the gaps for between RotS and ANH, so I guess we have to hope!

Me too. I like Rebels but I miss seeing all my favorite classic star wars characters regularly like Yoda, Mace, Anakin, Obi-wan, and so on… Rebels characters are great but it would be nice to get another look at classic characters we grew up with.

I mean just imagine a show where Luke Skywalker, Ben Solo and other new Jedi go on peace keeping missions while slowly watching the seeds of evil in Ben and conversing with long dead Jedi’s force ghosts. The shows last episode could be the fall of Luke’s Jedi. It would just be amazing!!

Although casting wise I’d love to see Ewan reprise the role, I’m not convinced it’s a good idea for a movie in general. There’s a lot more room for a good story with Solo.

It is quite clear that the backstory of the Knights of Ren is perfect for an anthology movie. I’m afraid they would have to recast though the younger versions e.g. of Ben Solo, Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker.

I’d be down for a clone wars type of show with Luke’s Jedi order and their adventures..it would eventually lead to Ben’s turn to the dark side..and if you give a season later down the line a time jump we can get some back story on the knights of Ren as well.

You don’t need to recast Kylo Ren in order to make him 10 years younger. It’s all make-up! If Robert Downey Jr. can play a teenage Tony Stark in Civil War, Adam Driver can as well. And btw. Robert Downey Jr. is in his 50s

Here is how I would pitch story
It is 15 years before TFA, Sebastian Stan plays younger Luke,a bit of mysterious Luke, and Jacob Tremblay plays younger Ben Solo (I am thinking to if they make that movie for 5 years from now,Jacob would be 15,and Stan would be a bit older also) It would be amazing story, how Snoke actually corrupted Ben Solo to The Dark Side, how he killed all of Luke’s apprentices, and we would see rising of first Knights of Ren. End of the movie would be Luke went missing, because he feels he let down his sister and all he loves. It would e amazing story, with amazing actors, and I would really love to see that

Theories suggest that the knights of Ren (possibly the dark covenante in the Aftermath book series) worship Vader and his heritage. It would make sense for them to worship the grandchild of Vader too, even if every single one of them as stronger than Kylo.

But this guy got his ass kicked and his face scarred by a little girl that didn’t have a single day of lightsaber training, thought that Luke and Force were a myth! My guess is that these guys would be terrible fighters, that would explain why they’re all dead, probably killed by random people! Great idea for a film JJ Abrams! What about quitting Hollywood for good? That’s an even greater idea.

Ohhh, she’s human now. I thought it’s just a fantasy movie where characaters are not human that would explain her super strengh. Why would humans be strong thatn aliens though? First thing we think would be the opposite, humans are not specially strong, they are more of brain creatures than gorillas. As for Rey, she’s a very skinny petite woman, why would she be the stronger creature on Jakku? She should be the weakest thing walking on that planet actually

You actually got my point without getting my point lol. (I love language – we are truly brain creatures!)

“She should be the weakest thing walking on that planet actually”

Exactly. And she’s had to survive, and she’s done it successfully, against odds. So she is a tough cookie, likely just as prepared to enter the ensuing conflict more than most might be.

So now we are applying Earth accent logic to the galaxy far, far away? No.

She’s strong in the Force, she can be whatever she wants to be – which is the point of the hero’s journey.

          • July 25, 2016 at 1:54 pm
            Permalink

No, that’s not the hero’s journey, the hero struggles before overcoming his dfiiculties. “she can be whatever she wants to be” is the Disney heroine journey, and they have nothing to do with each other, they are opposite. One learns his skills and earns his victory, the other is born with them, doesn’t deserve anything he’s got because he didn’t work for them.

Yes, Rey did learn to survive.

Like Luke learned to fly a starfighter with the best pilots in the galaxy.

Like Anakin learned to build the fastest podracer ever.

The hero’s journey isn’t about learning specific abilities – its confronting fears and family/parental legacy and becoming something new and different.

          • July 25, 2016 at 9:43 pm
            Permalink

Rey didn’t learn anything, it was granted automatically the moment she needed it. She pilots the Falcon better than Hans Solo on her first try. No explanation as to how an abandoned orphan living alone on a stranded planet, barely finding food somehow got her ace pilot licence. She knows the Jedi mind trick when she needs it, although she never heard about it. She becomes a Jedi Master in lighstaber duel the moment she touched it for the first time!
Rey is just like Kathleen Kennedy, she filled a female quota, no skills needed. Btw Star Wars under this woman and Spielberg reeks nepotism and inbreeding. And everybody knows that it only produces ugly, deformed, reatrded and importent offsprings. That’s exactly what TFA is.

Right, and girls are dressing up as Rey because Kennedy bribed them too.

The lack of your imagination is striking.

Here in the real world, TFA is loved. You’re welcome to come back to it. You’re mere mention of Spielberg is insidious.

Cosplaying and toy figurines are two different things. In fact, girls do cosplay more than boy, they craft their own costumes and love posing for photos. That’s perfectly normal to see a lot of Rey cosplayers, I don’t think you saw a lot Finn’s though. As for the toys, it’s a boys thing, period, and Hasbro knows this very well, that’s why they focus on male toys.

No, star wars conventions aren’t the real world, it’s a gathering of fanboys who would swallow anything that is slapped with a Star Wars logo. The real world sees TFA as a very generic sci fi movie that copied the plot of an older movie that is infinitely superior.

As for Spielberg, he is responsible for Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrams, Shia Laboeuf, Alden Ehrenreich and God knows what other hacks he helped get into Hollywood. This guy is a plague, he’s bringing his buddies into Star Wars, hijacking the natural selection process based on skills. Now , if you want to play or direct Star Wars, you only need to be friend with SPielberg and his entourage

Minority report is 20 years from Blade Runner and is laughable. It aged very badly .The cinematography was just ugly, some weird blue tint that gives you the puke, awful cgi and studio stunts . But the worse part is the script itself, it shows a society were cops arrest criminals before they commit their crimes. The premise is so wrong, any decent person would think it’s wrong and that this totalitarian police is going to be brought down by the end of the movie. Not at all, the main character is just that, an agent of that evil police.
That’s why I despise Spielberg, he’s always been a propaganda filmmaker, his films are the exact opposite of George Lucas movies. If Spielberg rebooted THX1138, it would be about a cop dealing with some prisoners who refuse to comply.

      1. HE was messed up… he just killed his dad.

      2. He took a direct hit from Chewie’s bowcaster, which had been decimating people the whole movie. (the fact that he survived is either a testiment to his strength, or because Chewie didn’t want to actually kill him. Regardless…. he was injured big time).

      3. Rey is powerful. the title was ‘The Force Awakens’… it refers to her. She isn’t just some girl. Did you see that extreme reaction from the force that she experienced when she touched Luke’s lightsaber?

Would like to know more but no thanks for the spin-off film. I know it probably won’t happen, but it would be really cool if they just made a movie in the star wars setting that didn’t have a connection to the saga films or a very small connection. Something new with new characters that doesn’t have the boundaries that prequels or certain kinds spin-offs have.
