The Truth About the Star Wars: Rogue One Reshoots.

Rogue One 01Recent rumors postulate that Christopher McQuarrie will had a hands-on role in the forthcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reshoots, which he vehemently denied. Entertainment Weekly follows this up with an article going with an in-depth explanation of what to expect from the reshoots.

Slashfilm, which had recently reported an article describing the rumor that as much as 40% of Rogue One needed to be reshot, reached out to McQuarrie (who is said to have rewritten part of the movie’s script) for answers. He had the following to say:

If there are any reshoots on Rogue One, I’m not supervising them. For any outlet to say so is not only wrong, it’s irresponsible. Gareth Edwards is a talented filmmaker who deserves the benefit of the doubt. Making a film – let alone a Star Wars chapter – is hard enough without the internet trying to deliberately downgrade one’s years of hard work. Who does that even serve? Let him make his movie in peace.

In addition, McQuarrie took to Twitter to debunk the rumors, along with thanking Slashfilm for reaching out to him.

The official story is that Rogue One is slated for some reshoots, but they aren’t as extensive as the eight-week shoot that was recently reported. From Entertainment Weekly:

Here’s what’s true: the film, which is about Rebels stealing the plans for the first Death Star just before the events of 1977’s original Star Wars, is undergoing four to five weeks of reshoots, beginning this month and ending just days before the Star Wars Celebration fan event in London on July 15.

In what may reassure fans, reshoots were scheduled for the film before even a single scene was shot. It’s standard practice now for large-scale films to build in additional weeks of shooting so filmmakers can tweak a movie after the first assembly cut.

Those reshoots were originally planned for the spring, but were bumped to mid-summer to allow for extra time as director Gareth Edwards and the creative team decided what they wanted to alter. “The changes have everything to do with clarity and character development and all take place [as inserts] within scenes we’ve already shot,” said one source on the project.

In other words, the changes involve more intimate moments – not redoing entire battle sequences or plot lines. “It’s a lot of talking in cockpits,” as one insider described the new footage.

Rogue One

According to Anthony Breznican’s report, if everything goes as planned, the movie will be locked in August and will be scored in September – both of which would actually come at an earlier point in post-production than similar benchmarks in the post-production cycle of The Force Awakens. The rumor that as much as 40% of the film would be reshot was equally as derided as it was mocked by EW’s sources. If that much of the movie needed to be reshot, then the movie wouldn’t make its December 2016 release date, and word that there were issues with the production would have hit much earlier than a mere six and a half months before release. The month-long period of reshoots owe themselves over to the schedules of the cast, many of whom live in completely different areas of the world; if the reshoots had been set for when they were originally planned, then the filming period wouldn’t have taken as much time.

One of the big fears about the reshoots that people have heard recently is that they will make the movie “Disneyfied”; which is to say that the movie might be a lot less like Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, or Zero Dark Thirty as some fans had hoped for. However, EW’s sources clarified that the intention is to keep the film tonally-distinct from a movie like The Force Awakens, and that it is still very much a “war film” like director Gareth Edwards had discussed back in Celebration Anaheim. (The only people outside of Lucasfilm to see the movie are Disney representatives Bob Iger and Alan Horn, who were said to be helpful with the film’s production and not meddling in nature.) A new addition to the film crew will work toward keeping the film’s gritty tone intact with the reshoots. Tony Gilroy (who wrote and directed Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy, along with writing the first three movies in the Jason Bourne series) contributed to the movie after production had wrapped, and his additions will be looked at as a major part of the reshoots. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, whose husband (producer Frank Mashall) has worked with Gilroy in the past, has apparently appointed Gilroy as a creative consultant on other Star Wars projects. Gilroy also did some work for Godzilla, the previous movie that Edwards directed, and will serve as the second unit director for the reshoots.

One last thing to note is that one of the representatives has said that fans should “go insane” when they see what they’ve cooked up in time for Celebration Europe. We know that there’s going to be a big Rogue One panel that Edwards himself will attend, so it seems incredibly likely that we’ll be seeing a trailer when the big Star Wars fan convention arrives.

Padme didn’t die from losing the will to live, the discount medical droid they used during child birth was malfunctioning. She was pregnant with triplets. The third baby, unbeknownst to anyone, caused and survived her death and lived in the womb for several days until her funeral where Jar Jar heard the baby crying. He rescued the baby and now Dave Skywalker Binks will make his triumph debut in Rogue One.

But Finn was TFA’s lead. He had very similar amount of screentime and spoke nearly identical number of words as Rey. And if you bring up Luke’s lightsaber – he used it more often than Rey. Nobody said anything about his Force-sensitivity during the film’s campaign, only fans came to a conclusion that lightsabers can be used solely by Force-sensitive beings.

No. 😛 For many people Disney will remain the embodiment of all the wrong things in the film industry, despite it being a company that lets its artists have a huge artistic freedom, just because it owns Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm, owners of the most popular IPs in the world.

Are you high? Why is a company that owns successful subsidiaries and actually uses those companies to produce more entertainment for everybody mean that they are evil!?
You even said that they let their artists have a lot of creative freedom, which is a good thing. Would you prefer them to be controlling and hover over every little thing the artists produce?

I don’t understand these people who complain about Disney. It makes no sense to say that a company is evil because they want to be successful at producing movies with a 4 billion dollar purchase.

Would you prefer if George never sold Lucasfilm and we got no new Star Wars movies?

JJ Abrams loves Star Wars as much as you or I, and was a big reason as to why he didn’t want to take on the mantle of directing it in the first place because it would be too much of a burden and stress. I wouldn’t say Abrams was Kennedy’s last choice but there were plenty other directors she reached out to who flat out said no.

I would say you have to be a pretty big fan of Star Wars to be considered for the job as director for a Star Wars movie. Heck some cynics see TFA as fan fiction anyway, so if it’s fan fiction wouldn’t it have to be made by some pretty big fans?

While I still rank ROTJ higher than TFA, I totally agree. Why anyone would rank any of the Prequels higher than The Force Awakens is beyond me.

Some folks will jock the Prequels because they were Lucas’s vision. Who cares? The movies were rotten. I don’t care how loyal a film is to the film maker’s vision or whatever. If the movie stinks, it stinks.

Lucas’s vision included: Jar Jar, elected queens, a clone army of one million (gasp!) soldiers, poop and fart jokes, flipping and grunting lightsaber Yoda, those stupid super-battle droids, that dumb half robot separatist guy, General Grevious….ugh….I can’t do this any longer.

There are rumours that Vader survives an assassination attempt ( the exploding shuttle from the trailer), he’s injured and has to recover in the bacta tank (trailer). Then he confronts Jyn dressed in a death trooper armor, she has two sticks equivalent to lightsabers on her back and she can fight better than Darth Maul. She kicks Vader’s ass, but it’s okay, Vader was still injured from the explosion, so I guess it makes sense for the Disney crowd.

I haven’t followed all the posts, so I’m not sure what you are referring to. But I don’t see a problem with a fan questioning/disliking the idea of Darth Vader getting his butt kicked by anyone at this stage of the Star Wars universe. I hope it’s a false rumour.

In Empire, Luke Skywalker – a powerful force user who has had some training with Yoda and Ben looks like a school boy when fighting Vader, and cops the thrashing he probably deserves for not completing his jedi training, losing an arm even though Vader wasn’t actually trying to kill him! Vader is powerful.

It’s nothing to do with the fact that Jyn Erso is a woman – Vader is powerful. I don’t care if the character Jyn Erso was a man played by The Rock, I would still see it as a continuity issue (not to mention terrible writing) if Jyn Erso owned Vader in a duel. And clearly I’m not the only one.

It’s just the time you approach it with. Did you have a huge problem with Kylo losing in TFA after his injuries and emotional draining after killing Han? I had zero issues with that scene but yes I would have a problem with “Vader getting his butt kicked” by Erso and I’m sure that would never happen as it makes little sense for it to happen. She isn’t a Jedi or a force user that I’m aware of and Vader is supposed to be a very seasoned vet at this point so I would be shocked if that happened. And I think there’s a zero percent chance of it happening. Could Vader ultimately fail at some point? Sure, but I don’t think it’s going to be because Erso caught him one v one in a duel that he gets his ass handed to him in.

I didn’t really think Platinum Star’s comment was that bad, to be honest, again you might be referring to other comments he or she made that I haven’t seen, I’m not sure.

It seems we’re on the same page regarding Vader getting beaten by Jyn – let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

Did I have a “huge problem” with Kylo losing in TFA? I can definitely say it bugged me, and I did not believe it was plausible, and that had nothing to do with Rey being a woman.

Yes, Kylo was injured and emotionally drained, but that didn’t stop him chasing down Rey and Finn, and then basically destroying Finn.

I can certainly understand why people might think the folks at Lucasfilm are pushing a feminist agenda, but that’s not the issue to me – I’m more concerned with the quality of the story telling.

If they remade the OT with a female “Luke Skywalker”, I’d have no problem. If they remade TFA with a male “Rey”, I’d still have issues with Rey’s ability to use the force having only discovered it a few hours previously.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed TFA despite its flaws, I’m glad we have it, and I’m excited for Rogue One and Episode 8.

          • June 7, 2016 at 8:42 am
            Permalink

I had no problems with the end duel at all. He destroyed Finn easily because he’s not a force user that we or he is aware of and he wasn’t supposed to bring him to snoke. His goal with Rey was to lure her powers out and have her dip her feet into the dark side because he wanted to train her and as I said he was horribly injured and drained and basically a rookie at all of this so yea. But I do agree that vader should not get beat by her in rogue one in the way I mentioned.

I also guarantee in episode VIII Kylo is going to not be toying with anyone this time and will be out for blood.

I thought TFA had if any issues, very minor ones and was one of the best Star Wars movies we’ve ever had. That’s just me tho
( and a lot of others ). So that’s why I have faith moving forward

Don’t worry, Vader just can force choking Jyn up, down, left, right and breaking her neck with his mind. More seriously, the only way Erso could defeat Vader in duel would be by cheating, feinting or for example desactivating the auto-breathing of Vader’s suit.

Guess we’ll get a better idea when we see the trailer. Even if this film does suck, I just hope it does well even though I think it will be written off as a failure anyway just because it won’t do TFA numbers.

The spinoffs are the future of SW. After 9 films, There’s only so much more they can do in the saga but the non-saga ones they can do just about anything with the right writers/directors.

After Rogue One/Han, I’d like to see them do something really daring that’s outside of the box like the MCU did by taking chances on D list characters like with Antman/Guardians Of The Galaxy and making a film only about aliens or droids. Kind of like what Henson tried with The Dark Crystal and puppets.

Yo how cool would it be if this movie had a Zero Dark Thirty-esque night-vision scene where they cut the lights on the Death Star and start wrecking people in the dark. Then all of the sudden the hallways light up red when Darth Motherfu**ing Vader pops out.

From what I’m reading it sounds to me that this was a part of the quality plan. Rogue One is currently version 0.7. Re-shoots are simply a part of the planned post-production.

No, re-shoots are part of production. Not post-production. A project cannot be in post-prod if it is still shooting.

The film making process is linear. From production (principle photography) it moves into post-production, that includes reshoots.

            Reshoots

If there are issues with any of the scenes that cannot be resolved by editing, the scene will most likely have to be reshot. The editor examines every clip of the video and compiles a list of the scenes that must be reshot. The crew prepares the scenes, the actors are called back, and the reshoots are done. The number of days that must be committed to reshoots depends on the amount of scenes that be redone.

Star Wars previously is about as smooth as a baby’s butt. We all want Rogue One to be a baby’s butt covered in sand. We don’t want the movie to be as rocky as a gravel driveway. The reshoots will keep the right amount of grittiness that we all want.

    • June 4, 2016 at 9:04 pm
      Permalink

What I think the reshoots are all about is adding in intimate character moments some with humor some with other forms of levity so that when the shit hits the fan we will actually care about the characters it’s happening to. They are still keeping the darker elements but those types of elements don’t work without levity and tone changes because it becomes a slog to get through and tone deaf – look at soldiers they always make light in certain situations to cope with the horrible things that lie ahead otherwise you would go insane from fear

To me this sounds… good. I mean how many times have you watched a movie or played a game where they failed to make you connect with the characters? Where it’s all action but you just don’t care. I always feel that’s the biggest crime with amazing IP. Wasting all that potential behind wiz bang effects and no heart.

If they were able to spot it and be able to fix it. That’s amazing. I hope it all comes together.

Reshoots are common, but Disney seems to be going all out big time with Rogue One. Why? This is my opinion, but Disney watched the film and saw two huge flaws that could cause the film to be considered low in quality. 1) The film lacks energy(fun, excitement)…2) The characters aren’t worth connecting to or caring about. Monsters and Godzilla both have these flaws. Monsters is a good movie, and Edwards does a good job in the other ares to hide those two flaws. In Godzilla he doesn’t, and Godzilla is a mixed bag for many.

My guess is that Disney is jumping in to fix what they see as potential problems. A dark war movie may have been something new, but Edwards vision wasn’t good enough to pull it off. Thus Disney is throwing in more traditional Star Wars. This is the second film in there franchise, and they need quality.

I was about to roll my eyes like “oh here’s another guy that thinks he knows everything…”, but you’ve actually got a solid point here.

I know that if Disney saw Gareth’s work and saw the flaws and said “hey, this needs more work” then that is incredibly GOOD NEWS in my book.

To say Godzilla was a mixed bag for me is a massive understatement; it legitimately pissed me off, the fact that I spent money and 200 minutes of my time on it. I say, heck yeah the dude needs some outside help. Gareth was always the one I worried about when I heard his name on the lineup. It’s very plausible that my worries are being edited away right now.

While I agree that the characters in Godzilla were a little bland, it didn’t diminish my enjoyment of that film. Edwards brought a ton of atmosphere to Godzilla that more than made up for any lack in character development. I have to disagree on Monsters though, I felt connected to those characters. You have to keep in mind, too, that Rogue One is only his third film. He went from making a small indie to making two huge franchise pictures. Flaws are expected to show a little. And if they use these reshoots to streamline the film, all the better. Edwards has shown a lot of promise, I’m curious to see what he’ll do next!
