Editor Maryann Brandon on Rey’s Parents, the Original Opening of The Force Awakens, How Powerful Obi-Wan Is and More

Maryann BrandonAfter a special screening of The Force Awakens at The Pollock Theater, Oscar-Nominated editor Maryann Brandon took the time to do an hour long Q&A about her work on the seventh installment of our favorite franchise. The famous editor touched on Rey’s parents, the original beginning of TFA, Kylo Ren, the Force Back scene, Han’s death and the importance of Maz, as well as how powerful exactly is Obi-Wan, according to George Lucas. Brandon revealed even more extremely interesting bits about The Force Awakens and I recommend everyone to listen to the whole thing. Read on for the full details…

The Q&A began with a very simple question:

Who are Rey’s parents?

I actually don’t know. I am not even sure that they know. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan weren’t talking about it. They shifted back and forth and they haven’t talked about it. Your guess is as good as mine.

In some films that are serialized we change things all the time. We start with one intention and suddenly, you know what, scrap that idea, let’s change who everyone is.

TFA Script

On The Force Awakens script:

Maryann Brandon also talked about TFA script and the secrecy surrounding it. She showed the script, which as we already know was printed on red paper with each person’s name printed across every page. This was done so that if something leaks, they would know who it was. The red paper was used so that the script couldn’t be xeroxed. And although she was locked in a room where she had to read the script in privacy, she managed to convince J.J. to let her take the script home. It was really tough reading 140 pages, especially on this red paper.

On the different beginning of the movie:

Maryann also talked about the different beginning that the movie had (Luke’s severed wrist holding the lightsaber), and why they decided to go against it. The main reason was because many people haven’t seen the Original Trilogy (including the other editor Mary Jo Markey) and this would have been very confusing.

Also the editor revealed that they re-shot the opening scene and added Poe’s humorous lines, while speaking to Kylo Ren. They did that to soften the tone of the opening scene with the villagers being massacred. And Star Wars has always been tongue in cheek during hard and difficult situations like this.

10 - Rey-and-BB-8

On Rey:

At one point Rey’s introduction was not entirely without words as in the final movie. They wanted to underline her loneliness, and after listening to John Williams’ theme on Rey, they decided to make the introduction with no words at all.

On Kylo Ren:

On Kylo Ren, the editor revealed that originally they unmasked him much earlier in the movie. During the first scene with Snoke, Adam Driver was actually without helmet. A CGI helmet was added so that the revelation would happen at a later point. This made his character more menacing.

Also the scene where Kylo talks to Vader’s mask initially appeared much earlier in the movie. They moved it later because it made him more insecure earlier in the film. It was really important to them to make the audience believe that during Han’s death, there was still chance for Kylo to turn to the light and spare his father.

On Maz Kanata:

Brandon also touched on Maz Kanata and her incredible importance to the story. The initial plan was that Maz’s attention is on Rey and how she is a Jedi. Also at some point Maz had force powers and even some magical abilities that were scraped. And they decided Maz to focus on Finn so that you won’t hate him after he leaves our heroes.

Knights of Ren

On the Force Back scene:

Another interesting topic that was brought up, was of course the Force Back scene. According to Maryann this scene is not similar to the Dagobah cave scene from The Empire Strikes Back. There Luke went to face his fear and learn a lesson. In the Force Back scene Rey faces a new world that she was never part of. According to her logic, the lightsaber does call to Rey, but it’s more like she is looking for it and not the other way around, since she will eventually become a Jedi.

Maryann mentioned about the other scenes that were never filmed for the Force Back vision. One of them was Rey walking down the Bespin corridor and seeing Vader cutting off Luke’s hand. Then she turns and sees a version of Snoke with a little boy. But these scenes never made much logic and they scrapped them.

She also said something very interesting. In the original script the Force Back scene was intended to be a ride through the history of Star Wars. It was a very early draft, when Michael Arndt was still attached to the project.

On Han’s death:

For Han’s death scene Brandon said that such powerful character like Han Solo should go, so that there will be place for developing new strong characters.

Vader-v-Obi-Wan

On how powerful is Obi-Wan according to George Lucas:

During the fans’ questions Maryann did a surprising revelation. She was talking about the different levels of Jedi. Some are strong with the Force, some not so much, but if you want to become a Jedi, you should go through a special training. Then she revealed that during J.J. Abrams’ discussions with George Lucas, the father of the franchised made the shocking reveal to Abrams that Obi-Wan Kenobi is not actually strong with the Force. He was average!!!

On the strange Leia – Rey scene:

At the end of the movie many people noticed that after Han’s death, instead of hugging Chewbacca Leia hugs Rey who she never met. J.J. Abrams already revealed in the past that this was a mistake. Brandon added that in previous drafts Leia knew who Rey was. They scrapped that since it didn’t have any logic, because we don’t know who Rey is.

“Then she turns and sees a version of Snoke with a little boy.” Wow, that is interesting. Presumably a young Ben Solo?

But apparently he only went with Snoke around 5 years before TFA according to latest novel. So he would have already been in his 20s

Just goes to show how much of the story wasn’t tied down until the last moment, hence nothing new other than a bigger Death Star.

“Then she turns and sees a version of Snoke with a little boy.” – this is in relation to Ben Solo right, so they were still playing with him being converted at a young age. This isn’t the case now as you pointed out he would of been in his 20s. Hence the story wasn’t tied down to the last minute

Snoke was apparently hanging around Ben Solo from the very beginning. Ben just finally turned Dark in his 20s.

That’s interesting, because according to the new novel, Bloodline, 6 years before TFA, Ben is still with Luke. If what she says is true, maybe Snoke has been around a long time, a bit like Palpatine was.

I never really saw Obi Wan as anything other than an average Jedi. Anikin was stronger in the Force than Obi Wan. So was Luke. Obi Wan never seemed to have particularly outstanding abilities in the Force. Guess his midichlorian count is just not that high! 😉

Agreed. Obi Wan made it to Master because of his years of service, his devotion to the Force, and his willingness to play everything by the book as far as he possibly could. Not because he’s a powerful badass.

And of course he’d be more in-tune with the Force after being in exile for 20 years with nothing but meditation and practice to pass the time.

If fans wrote Star Wars, all the “cool” costume characters with cool weapons (i.e., the ones that sell the most toys) would have superhero powers. I’m glad Kenobi is an average Jedi. It gives him more humanity. That is why he was always one of my favorites in this saga.

I would not call him an average jedi. Even though his force powers are average, he is still one of the greatest jedi in the history of the order.
Though i do agree with you on the humanity part. It really does fits his character, making his role and accomplishments in the story more compelling.

Obi Wan(delf?) though not the most powerful, is naturally good, selfless and sensible. He’s prepared to sacrifice himself to save his friends in the cause of the greater good, and in doing so attains great wisdom and enlightenment, he’s basically Gandalf. Sorry cantina, GL isn’t really all that original.

    • May 16, 2016 at 10:09 pm

GL hasn’t downgraded any characters. Some fans just have a higher opinion of small characters, Obi-Wan excluded (as he is a big character). In this instance GL is just stating an in-universe fact about Obi-Wan Kenobi which is easily apparent when watching the saga. The character is still great regardless of his strength in the force.

Kylo’s face reveal should have been saved until the “torn apart” scene. They also shouldn’t have just had Snoke say “you’re father, han solo”, Han and Leia’s son should have been mentioned only vaguely so you thought he just wasn’t a part of the resistance, and the “Ben!” moment would have been a huge reveal

    • May 16, 2016 at 11:04 pm

I agree. “In the hands of Han Solo” would have been sufficient. But they would have also had to rework the Han and Leia dialogue to avoid spoiling it there as well.

If Hux had made an appearance meeting Kylo carrying Rey tot the shuttle the audience wouldn’t of been sure who was the son of Han and Leia.

I was glad they didn’t wait too long to reveal that Kylo was Han’s son. However, I think Snoke should have just said “in the hands of your father.” Kylo doesn’t need to be told who his father is and it would have been okay if it wasn’t perfectly clear to everyone in the audience at that point. Most would have understood immediately.

Exactly. The film went out of its way to telegraph that Han was toast. However, I called it as soon as Leia asked Han to bring their son home. Yeah, that made perfect sense. I mean, he was only a major problem back when he was just a teenager. I’m sure it’ll work out smoothly now that he’s firmly on the dark side, with a side of daddy issues. What we got didn’t have much logic either. Leia spent the whole movie desperately searching for her twin brother. She finally finds out where he is, and she sends a stranger to meet him? Ummm, why doesn’t she go, too? It’s not like they’re in the middle of a battle or anything. What, she can’t briefly visit her own brother to grieve over Han and Ben? What? I said the reason she sends Rey is that she does not want to dredge up old wounds. If she goes it will just remind Luke about his failure with her son Ben. So she sends this girl who has a good heart and can offer Luke the chance to redeem himself by successfully training someone to be a Jedi Knight.

Again, you’re not making a whole lot of sense. Sending Rey will accomplish the same thing. Luke will be reminded of why he went into hiding when she finally meets him. If he doesn’t already know, Luke will learn that his failure to play an active role in TFA contributed to Han’s death. I also imagine that he might wonder why Leia, his own sister, didn’t come along.

Leia or no Leia, it’s inevitable that Luke will be reminded of his failures.

No but she is trying to take things slowly.Rather than throwing everything on him at once. She believes Rey is up to the challenge of getting Luke back and also becoming a Jedi Knight. She is doing what is best for the galaxy. Also it is not like she has a Resistance to run or something. Looking at your previous comments it confirmed my suspicion that you look for anything to gripe about with this movie so I am not going to waste in further of my time on you.

Maybe Leia knows who Rey is, and knows that Luke knows who she is and that her return will be meaningful to Luke. These could be things that get revealed in episodes 8 and 9.

And, um, yeah, they actually are in the middle of a battle. A really big one. The FO just destroyed the home system of the New Republic. It would be kind of irresponsible for the leader of the Resistance to leave at a time like that.

These are just excuses to explain why Leia didn’t see her own brother. She played an important leadership role in the Rebel Alliance back in the OT, but she also spent lots of time with the gang, especially Empire when they were on the run from Vader. Leia spent the whole movie looking for her own brother. All of a sudden, she’s absolutely too busy to go visit him even though he’s essential to helping their cause. Yeah… okay. Not to mention the fact that they just won a major battle. They weren’t hunkered down or anything. Plus, I imagine they would have to change bases anyway since the First Order knows where they are now.

My take from the hugging scene is that Leia knows who Rey is, but Han didn’t.

Leia had to be told who Rey was and referred to her as the girl. I feel they hugged mostly because they both figured out who each other was and that they were both grieving over Han.

I’m sure Han knew who she was. When Maz asks “Who’s the girl.” they cut it so that the answer isn’t revealed. She is probably someone special to him. Maybe he knew her parents, or maybe she IS Luke’s daughter and he and Leia are aware of this..who knows. Han doesn’t look a guy to randomly recruit people he just met, no matter how experienced they seem to be.

Not sure about that. At first, Han tells Chewie to put Rey and Finn in a pod and drop them off somewhere. It’s only after realising the First Order are after her, and that it has to do with Luke, that he offers to help her.

I don’t think Han knew who she was. Possibly he sensed something, but he didn’t KNOW.

My take is that Leia felt that Kylo killed Han, and someone kicked in the ass Kylo.
Also most probably they talked about it in the return travel:
“Hey, I am Rey the girl rescued, do you copy?”
“Leia speaking, how is my husband…”
“Mmm, Finn is badly injured, and we come with a fancy lightsaber!

Making the Force Back a walk-through of the entire history of Star Wars would have been too much (or just an even more bewildering muddle of swiftly changing images, especially if the prequels were also to be “covered”). But I regret that they didn’t have Rey glimpse how Vader cut off Luke’s hand, as originally planned.

The tradition that Anakin/Vader is in every film would have been maintained, and for newcomers, it would have explained why this Luke guy has a prosthetic right hand when we finally get to see him.

The Force Back scene; so the primary focus of the scene (originally) was that Rey is caught up on the SW history. Well that’s awful nice of them for changing it to only focus on new stuff. Could you imagine how tacky it would’ve been to have a Star Wars clip-show thrown in there? The “TFA = ANH rip-off” critics would never let ’em hear the end of it.
But that is intriguing, I wonder if Rey’s increased knowledge of the SW events made it into the final script? Perhaps she saw more of the vision than we were made privy to?

Although the flying hand through space was an awful idea to begin with and should never have even been considered.

Obi-Wan was ALWAYS average. He got his ass kicked by Maul, Jango, AND Grievous only winning through sheer luck/cheating. I mean Dooku wounds him twice to the point he can’t even finish the duel. Literally he gets owned in every PT film. Only reason why he survived Anakin was due to his arrogance and having the high ground.

@Rey´s Parents, it was not their choice. Kasdan and Abrams didn´t have/want to write who are Rey parents. They could have and idea of it, but if it is not in the movie they don´t know because the following writers can change that.
It is a trilogy they had to left things open. I understand what she says like that.

Imagine the laugh of Rian Johnson if they show him Ep.VII, and say to him “Hey, it is not written anywhere, is not in the movie either, but Rey´s Parents are Pepi & Johny.”
He obviously would have answered, “So, why do you hire me?”

Lucas pretty much spitballed Luke and Leia being siblings but he still knew Vader was Luke’s Father by the time of ANH. It’s why the OT is so rewatchable since you can see the subtle hints there, If they don’t know who Rey’s is then that doesn’t really work.

          Yes, I got your point.
I mean that these guys are not stupid at all, of course they did their conjetures about Rey´s parenting, and they wanted us to make ours deliberately.
So now it is the moment of R.Johnson to follow their steps or whatever.

There is not a G.Lucas in this trilogy, a last word. Last word is R.Johnson because he is the writer of VIII and IX, but I guess he needs approbal of Lucasfilm and Disney.

ANH was designed as a finished unique movie, not as a trilogy. Look the ending… Lucas didn´t know he was going to be so sucessful. Yes, Vader=Father but in ANH is more a metaphor without ESB and ROJ.
Vader should have felt Leia was his daughter, or obviously the droids issue.

No, because only the people who have seen the Original Trilogy a million times would complain that it was too similar. How can an audience that has never seen the previous movies complain that they were too similar?

You could argue that TFA was aimed at both new audiences, by retelling a similar story, and old audiences, by playing off nostalgia.

Her quote was “many people haven’t seen the Original Trilogy”, which is slightly different. Of course loads of people have seen the OT, but they wanted to appeal to new audiences who hadn’t.

Agree 100% though with your comments on not knowing who Rey’s parents are in advance – I’m hoping there are some really awesome reveals that they are saving for us, rather than just making it up as they go along.

Agree 1000% about the floating hand in space idea too… the problem with that is that there was no one to ask “how the hell did that get there”, and no to reply “A good question – for another time”.

Obi-Wan may have been average, but at least he never got beaten by a girl who had literally just discovered the force mere hours earlier!

Yeah, I’d really hate for the saga to become an unmitigated cluster fuck ala the Highlander and Terminator series. That’s what happens with no one steering the ship and they only go by fan service.

I’m not saying he’s a pussy though since if he’s not naturally gfted it makes him more heroic going up against someone who is. Kind of like Magic Johnson who was never the greatest player but is one of the greats since he understood basketball better than anyone and where everyone wa on the courts at all times. Same with Obi-Wan and experience.

How is Luke’s severed hand floating through space a great scene? It’s baffling that they even considered it, because it raises far more questions than why Maz has it in a box. Sure, I can believe that scavengers visited Cloud City at some point and found the saber, after which it passed through many hands (no pun intended.) How does a hand that was last seen falling into the depths of Cloud City, if not Bespin to be crushed in the gas giant’s gravity, end up in space, still holding the saber? It’s nonsense, and good riddance.

How about Vader had it collected after defeating Luke at Cloud City and it wound up with Kylo, who loses it, then tries to get it back after Finn unknowingly sends out to space with the garbage. Because Finn works in sanitation. I win.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi is not actually strong with the Force. He was average!!!”

BUT WHY IS THIS A SURPRISE?

Why does people intend ObiWan to be so powerful and important as a Jedi? He’s just the Jedi Friend, drawn as a cool character because he has relevance to the story and had the bad luck of training the Chosen One. Anakin himself shown of greater habilities already as a Padawan learner in several occasions, and Obi has been a looser in almost all situations:

    – Coruscant chase: They catch the bounty hunter thanks to Anakin jumping from the car.

    – Fighting Jango in Kamino: He loses.

    – First duel against Dooku: Obi is the first jedi down, only by a couple of laser cuts but no limb lost (Finn’s level……..)

    – Battle of Coruscant: Anakin saves Obi from the vulture droides.

    – Second duel against Dooku: Obi, again, is the first jedi down. Anakin wins.

… and wisely George made Obi win the fight against Anakin by placing the Average Jedi in the high ground.

I think this is the end for the Rey Kenobi theory.

Yea, staying a half meter higher instantly leads to defeating one of the strongest force users in canon history. Indeed, what a brilliant idea…
That was the only thing Maul wasnt instructed by his training. If an opponent is jumping over you after incredibly suspicious nods to a lightsaber, dont just stay there frozen like an old Windows 98…

True. I never really liked how any of the PT duels end (except the Grievous vs Obi-wan, that was pretty badass).
They’ve always felt forced and badly written (like Obi-wan not using his force speed while running towards the gates in TPM). Hopefully the ST will be more coherent with the ending of the fights (TFA’s was ok imo).

Yes, but in that case, why did Lucas put it in at all? Except for one scene in TPM they never used it again in the whole PT… It just feels so incoherent in that way. At least imo.

      • May 18, 2016 at 11:04 am

The real reasons are that Obi-Wan knows Anakin better than anyone else in the galaxy, and Anakin is blinded by a potent toxic combination of arrogance and anger, as well as grief and guilt over what just happened with Padme, and not to mention a huge part of him still doesn’t want to kill Obi-Wan. That’s why Obi-Wan won. The half a meter height advantage was circumstantial and almost irrelevant. Lucas certainly could have come up with a better way to portray this on screen but the real drama is what is happening in the subtext, in the music and in the character’s (phenomenal in this scene IMO) acting.

        • May 18, 2016 at 4:03 pm

I never felt any real drama or emotions from the prequels, especially not from the Anakin vs Obi-wan scene. Mostly because we barely know any of the characters and their relationship was never developed on screen and the deeds of the characters were very questionable to say the least…
In ep I and II Obi-wan was annoyed and angered by Anakin who he didnt even want to train at all in the beginning. They suddenly share some ,,funny” one liners in ep III, because there is supposed to be a tragedy in the end of the movie.
There is little to no build up to anything in the story or in the developement of the characers, thus Anakin goes from an ambitious, but tempted jedi to crazy psychopat who kills everyone he knew and grew up with, even children from literally one minute to another because he has to obey a monster guy for some reason (even after he admittely can’t save his wife who will give birth in like the next day).
The duel dosent feel like a tragedy, because the pacing and character developement were so horribly executed, that it feels like watching a bad parody.
Its ironic how ROTJ 20 years earlier without the advantage of over the top CGI lava effects or ,,hearthbreaking” monologues managed to deliver real drama and way much more emotions than the ,,tragedy” of Anakin Skywalker…
This is just my opinion though.

I understand that point of view as I felt that way for many years, but I guess I feel differently now from having the gaps in the filmic character development filled in by supplementary media like Clone Wars, dozens of novels set in between the prequel films, and even using my own imagination to figure out how the characters must have been feeling in each situation and how it would affect me if I were in the situation. Added onto all that is how much John Williams’ score and Ewan McGregor’s dedication do a ridiculous amount to sell the key moments…now that I have put all those things together in my mind and let them stew for a decade, the climax of Revenge of the Sith is one of the most moving sequences I have ever seen on film and it just keeps getting better and better every time I revisit it. I always find some new nuance that makes it even deeper and richer than ever before.

I agree with you. If we put the very good clone wars series into the picture it suddenly becomes a lot better. That show was so much more emotional than the prequels, especially the final episode with Ashoka…

However ROTJ didnt need any ,,patches” to be great. Anytime when I rewatch the duel and the ending scene (with the new music) I immidiately realise again and again why Star Wars is the greatest saga ever created.

        To recap:

        – Lucas says that Obi-Wan isn’t actually strong
        – Dani Catala cites canon scenes from canon Star Wars films to support this sentiment

And Lucas is somehow revising history? Um…what? The original trilogy never even says he is strong with the Force.

When I think about what’s going through their heads in those moments and WHY they are spinning without making contact (desperately looking for an opening, trying to get one millisecond ahead of the other in their mutual prediction of what the other is going to do, and all the while a huge part of them doesn’t really want to win at all) there’s a hell of a lot of drama. The best part about the SW universe is that there’s so much room for the imagination: with the force, with motive, with emotion and the struggle between good and evil/right and wrong. It’s perfectly fine (and i somewhat agree with you honestly, not this scene in particular) for you to not enjoy it, but you’re not the feels police.
