J.J. Abrams Teases More Deleted Scenes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the Future!

JJ. AbramsA few months ago while speaking to Collider, J.J. Abrams revealed that The Force Awakens had at least a dozen deleted scenes, which running time was around ten to twenty minutes. After the Blu-ray was released 10 days ago, many fans noticed that the release had only a few scenes withthe total running time of less than 4 minutes. Now Collider caught up with Abrams at CinemaCon and decided to follow up with The Force Awakens director about the deleted scenes…

From Collider:

When asked if there are any more deleted scenes on the way, Abrams replied:

J.J. ABRAMS: I think there are going to be some more that are going to be available online, but I don’t know when that’s going to happen. But there are some others.

SIMON PEGG: Most of them feature me, funnily enough. There’s a whole story featuring Unkar. Like him opening his shop—

ABRAMS: There is, actually.

Did Disney say “We’re going to have an ultimate box set and we want to save five minutes for that box set after Episode 9?”

ABRAMS: No, Disney’s been amazing. There’s been no nefarious or weird, “Let’s hold things back for the fans,” but there will be other deleted scenes that will be available for those who wish to see them.

You probably remember at least several scenes that we know exist and were not included in the Blu-ray release. One such scene is Unkar Plutt appearing in Maz Kanata’s castle.

Unkar Plutt On Takodana

As you know The Force Awakens 3D Blu-ray will be released later this year. Probably we will have some extra deleted scenes for this release, or maybe they will save it for the box release after Episode IX?

Lucasfilm has been doing this for years. They figure out a way to get people to buy the same movie 15 times by throwing in some extra bells and whistles with each successive release.

However, I can’t point to a worse collection of extras on a first release of any SW movie. This is some pro-quality trolling from Disney.

I remember when we didn’t have any extras and we had a videotape that would wear out and sometimes be eaten by the players, and that we still had to pay 15 to 20 dollars for them. (In 1990 or prior dollars, which had the value that 30 dollars does now.) So to me, it all looks good.

But the sorta-neat bit w/ Unkar showing up @ Maz’s palace (they kept it in the film novel) is that you find out the Imperial tracker (used to follow the Rebels back to Yavin from Death Star I) was still attached & active!

Really Han Solo is so stupid he never took the tracker off? And then the empire forgot in esb and had to hire the bounty hunters? Nah, good thing they deleted it.

It’s classic Lucasfilm marketing to bait fans into buying the same movie 15 times with extra bells and whistles with each successive release. That’s exactly what will happen with TFA.

Or… Each release has a schedule & a budget. They include as much stuff as they have time/money for. Each new release gets whatever new stuff the new budget/schedule allows. For the most part, Disney holds their home video rereleases to format changes (VHS, DVD, BR & etc.) Lucasfilm is a little worse, but not that much, not really. There are lots of reasons (rights, cost of remastering, space) that old stuff doesn’t make it to new releases along with the new content.
FWIW, my personal pet peeve is all the variations caused by “exclusive” versions. Basically, a store will kick in some money to get extra content that no one else has. That can make it difficult to buy a 100% complete version.

It’s all a money grab. They did it with the OT for 15 years. They will have a new box and “new” featurette every year in the spring after a film came out and again every year in the fall before Christmas. The multi-retailer thing is annoying, but they get shameless once fans have purchased it once. I predict they will have a “what if Luke had been in the movie” featurette in a year or two. As soon as I saw the concept art of an aged, samurai-ish, yet active and engaged Luke (with lightsaber), I do they were going to explore they’re wimping out on including Luke in TFA in a future DVD extra.

I was very disappointed with the deleted scenes that were released so far. Only the Kylo Ren on the Falcon scene was stand out good. The Maz’s basement one was interesting in that… holy crap I’m glad they took it out.

Where was Kor Sella, Chancellor Villecham and the rest of the Republic? Where was Maz using the Force?

So long as we’re not looking at a long tail of ever more feature packed re-relases (and JJ seems to be saying that’s not the case) then I’ll be interested to see these when they surface.

Disappointed that they were short and kind of nothing scenes. I felt like there were some reasonably meaty scenes that got cut for time and we didn’t get any of those.

Glad they took out Maz using the Force. It would be confusing. I like her just having been around long enough to know about the Jedi and the Force, I don’t feel the movie explained the whole her having Force powers but not being a Jedi thing well enough.

Oh, it may well have been the right decision to take it out. I’d like to see it out of curiosity.

Well, seeing as how the original cut of the movie was rumored to be 20-30 minutes longer than the final cut, and seeing as how we got maybe five minutes worth of deleted scenes with the blu-ray… yeah, I’d say there’s probably still quite a bit of deleted footage there that we haven’t seen.

Given how hard they marketed Captain Phasma, with her ending up barely being in the final cut of the movie, I assume there are at least a couple of cut scenes with her.

Well, in the first place – have anyone seen one single ship around Maz Kanata´s castle? 🙂 Not counting thhe Falcon, of course. Zero starship. No No landing platforms whatsoever. No bartenders to be seen anywhere, all of them sitting inside, no one going in or out….when Han and co. ariived, it was like a deserted place. I still didn´t understand it. If there´s a famous smuggler planet with an even more famous place of smugglers queen, and if the bar is full, where is the starport and the life around the Castle????

I agree it did look a little deserted… but if you recall Finn was going to board one of the other ships before Hosnian Prime was blown up. From Disney’s perspective, making it Coruscant would be a bad decision, as they’re trying to move away from the PT era, which at the time of TFA is literally over 50 years in the past. You’re trying to shut down people that argue against you but you’re not very good at it.

See if Disney truly wanted to give a big F you to the prequels they should have just blown up cor. But see that would be too logical for you.

And actually it’s only 30 years in the past since it was still the seat of power at the end of Jedi.

Btw I love that you know so much about Disney even though they literally put out a prequel comic today about obiwan and Anakin. That’s odd for a company trying to distance themselves from the prequels. I agree there is a push to differentiate themselves from the prequels, but it’s hardly the actions of a company that wants to distance themselves from the pt by putting out a pt comic.

“From Disney’s perspective, making it Coruscant would be a bad decision, as they’re trying to move away from the PT era, which at the time of TFA is literally over 50 years in the past.”

I like how you think that’s what Disney wants based on 1 movie. We have yet to see episode 8 or 9. And for all we know that was jj not Disney. The PT made a ton of money and we already know Disney likes money. If it wasn’t for the pt being so successful they wouldn’t have bought lucasfilm. And as I’ve mentioned before they are still releasing prequel material all the time.

So yeah it is illogical to think that Disney wants to move away from the prequels when they clearly aren’t making that move. Even in tfa there were references to the pt like the clone army and the sith. It is 50 years later and the Jedi are pretty much dead so i wouldn’t expect a billion references. Even the OT didn’t have that many so it’s in line with that.

It’s what Disney wants based on all of their marketing and brand synergy. Notice they cancelled Clone Wars. Disney knows that money comes from making good movies, and the PT have a terrible stigma within the fan community. It’s like putting a Gungan in the movie. No one wants to be reminded of the prequels, and Disney knows it.

That makes no sense. of course they aren’t marketing the prequels heavily they are over. Any more than they are marketing empire strikes back. Now don’t get your panties in a bunch there’s a move to tie the new trilogy back to the ot but that sounds like jj more than Disney.

But what makes you dumb is that Disney cancelled the clone wars because it aired on Cartoon Network and Disney would have had to pay royalties to them rather than be allowed to have it on their own network. Heck even after Disney cancelled it they put it on Netflix, released a bonus season, as well as a comic and novel spin off and soon we have an Ashoka novel coming. Not to mention new action figures and heavy clone wars tie ins on rebels. Also in case you have been spending too much time in your troll cave darth Mail has been all over the news lately for his big comeback in rebels.

And further I already demonstrated to you the references to the prequels in TFA… Do you not know how to read? Finally, you can’t stop pretending you speak for everyone “no one wants to be reminded of the prequels” … You can barely speak for yourself. Just crawl back into your cave already.

Notice that all of those TCW characters have been moved into the OT era. Also, Battlefront takes place in the OT as well. You can deny it all you want, but Disney has little interest in the PT era as of now. And by the way, everyone knows the Sith. Everyone knew about them in the Ot despite not being named in those movies. And the reference to a clone army was supposed to be an expository line that explained That the First Order had stopped the use of Clones. If they didn’t have to out that in there, they wouldn’t have.

          • April 25, 2016 at 7:36 pm
            Permalink

Way to contradict yourself turd. Those characters are in the OT era because the Rebels takes place in the OT era… which you could argue being 5 years before ANH is actually pre-OT era. They are still PT CHARACTERS. They still refer back to the PT. When people think of Darth Maul, they think of the PT.

Your basing Disney’s interest in the PT based on a video game? Well, by that logic then, why did they release the big Star Wars Disney infinity game around the PT? That was the first release they did with an Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka toy? It was called Twilight of the Jedi. (Can’t wait to see your excuse for that one). Not to mention, as I already mentioned, a brand new comic book starring Anakin and Obi-wan, set after Phantom Menace. And the forthcoming Ahsoka backstory novel.

Oh, and because the line in TFA about the clone army was expository, it didn’t count? Ummm… ok? Actually, they didn’t need it in there, there was no clone army talk in OT. And further, you don’t know why or why it wasn’t in there. Only the writers know, so stop talking like you have any clue as to the intention of the movie or the writers.

And hardly anybody knew about the Sith until the PT… aside from the more than casual fan. Vader and the Emperor were never called Sith in the OT movies. The PT told us Vader and the Emperor were Sith and fleshed out what the Sith were and who they were… in canon.

Look, you can deny evidence all you want, just makes you look like a big fat moron.

Of course its being held back for the double dip. And yes, there probably will be an extended edition at some point. Its 2016 and Disney wants money. Like most companies they will do multiple home releases.

I think some of the deleted scenes that were included were shortened too. The speeder chase for example- we never see them getting in the speeder or where it came from. Then the ‘standoff’ scene, Maz is supposed to make the ceiling collapse but it cuts short of that. I recall JJ Abrams in an interview before release saying there was something like 25 minutes of deleted scenes but there are, what about 7 minutes on the blueray? I’m sure this is intentional as a money spinner.

However, I won’t be re-buying because the deleted scenes will all be on youtube as soon as someone can upload them… which is how I’ve had to see the deleted scenes so far since the blueray isn’t realsed in the UK until Monday. (imagine my wrath when I went to pick it up last week to find I was 2 weeks early!)

I don’t know when they were removed but they weren’t in there when Daniel Fleetwood saw the movie 6 weeks before the movie was released, I know this via his widow who saw it with him. The only thing was in there that ended up being cut was more dialogue between Leia and Rey right before Rey left to go to Luke at the end, stuff the novel covers.

JJ, how about you cut this deleted scene BS and put this stuff back in the movie where it belongs. I bought the deluxe, I’ve seen the scenes; there is NO reason to keep this stuff out of the movie. None. I’ve heard the flow argument and frankly it doesn’t hold weight. I know the real reason you cut this film from 3 hours JJ was that mickey mouse wanted more asses in the seats. Fine. Now, give us the extended cut and stop pretending this 80% complete film you’ve screened to us is the true finished product. I know better. This film is awesome and no extended cut is a true disservice to the film.

I am absolutely happy we won’t see a “director’s cut”… Movies are one way, not many. 3 hours??? The only reason they cut it from 3 hours to the final length is because no other SW film was that long or needed to be that long. All movies have double of it’s final length recorded and discard lots of it. You say there was no reason to remove them… For me the question is, did these scenes add anything to the story that was needed to tell? No? Then cut it. It is called edit and improves the overall rythm of the film if done correctly. And I think they done it right.

Am I the only one pretty happy with the special features? I agree, I wish that more of the deleted scenes were on the Blu-Ray, but everything else was good for a standard release. Hell, I would actually say it was better than what the Complete Saga did. It had a good documentary and a bunch of cool, smaller features (including one on John Williams) and was easy to navigate. The Complete Saga, while technically had more, was oddly bare bones, mostly random interviews spread throughout and various prop, model, and costume galleries. And it’s selection of deleted scenes weren’t great either (I mean, I have more deleted scenes from Attack of the Clones on my VHS copy!). Combined with a lack of documentaries (other than old, vintage ones, which are a nice bonus) and topped with a terrible menu (I don’t want to navigate between planets!), The Force Awakens is a better release.

The only excuse I could think of is that the VFX for these deleted sequences weren’t finished, but I’m pretty sure that most fans would be okay if the deleted scenes were unfinished or were mostly storyboards.

I for one wasn’t watching for the VFX -I wanted to see bits of storytelling that was dropped for one reason or another.

The scenes we got were almost insulting. Where were all the Constable Zuvio scenes? Or the Senate scenes? Or Maz Kanata going back to the castle with them all? Or the COMPLETE “Escape from the Castle Basement” sequence? What we got was pitiful. I wouldn’t even consider them deleted scenes… more like deleted shots (or scene fragments).

I agree. Most of them were just pieces added on from other scenes that were left in the movie. I even recognized a hot in the final movie that would have transitioned into “Finn and the Villager”.

Slightly worrying info about what was cut, it appears in the rush they didn’t know where the story was going!

OMG stop whinning. you got the freakin movie and that’s what matters! The extra’s are a bonus, be thankful you got any! As for the menus, Jesus why do people worry about menus. They just get in the way of the content you want to see, takes longer to navigate, just keep it simple I say.

Right, well, tell you what – you get Disney to stop using bonus features as a selling point to push product, and then maybe you can expect people to stop complaining about how shitty they end up being. Oh, and let’s be clear – this IS product; nobody who pays good money for it owes Disney shit, let alone “thankfull”ness.

Right of course its their fault. Its always someone else’s fault, never the consumer. Everyone has a choice. You don’t have to buy it, but of course your all weak and blame it on someone other than yourselves.

It’s over 2 hours of extras added up. Plus all the free VFX stuff and trailers are all online now in HD. We get free stuff before even buying anything now. Not true 10 to 15 years ago or so.

My biggest regret is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to delete Simon Pegg from everything, ever, except maybe for Shaun of the Dead.

Figured you’d love Simon since he hates the prequels and has no respect for anyone who likes them.

I’m guessing some of the “held back” deleted scenes may incorporate plot points that were moved to later movies …
