Rumor: 10 More Star Wars Films in the Works at Lucasfilm?

112814_StarWars_TheForceAwakens4Is Lucasfilm expanding their slate of films in pre-production following their historic box office success of The Force Awakens? Well, the obvious answer to that would be a likely resounding “yes”, but we have yet to see any proof to back this up.

Well, this morning there is one report out there that Lucasfilm and Disney are now working with a slate of 10 future films in mind. Now, this rumor comes from the Daily Mail, so it is advisable to take it with a heaping helping of salt. But at the same time, this would just make logical sense. With a $2B+ worldwide start under their belts, Disney can likely assume that barring extenuating circumstances, that they have built up enough good will to allow this franchise to run for quite a while before it can be overexposed to the point of straining profitability. So, the initial plan of 6 releases being extended to 10 (or possibly 13, the article is unclear as to whether Episodes VII, VIII, and Rogue One are included in this tally) would make sense.

As to the content of these films if they truly exist, that is anyone’s guess. There have long been rumors of a second sequel trilogy, an Obi-Wan trilogy, and the mostly fan fueled rumors of an Old republic trilogy. So, will these films be in the main Saga continuity? A spin-off trilogy like Obi-Wan? Additional stand-alone “Star Wars Stories”?

star-wars-rogue-one-cast

It’s possible that even Lucasfilm is unsure at this point. It is possible that they want to see how Rogue One, and more importantly the Han Solo film perform before committing to more of the anthology films. If either or both of those fail to meet expectations, it is likely a second sequel trilogy will be in our future. If people flock to the story of young Han Solo, then something like an Obi-Wan trilogy set between Episodes III and IV may be seen as a safer bet, while they push the second sequel trilogy down the road a bit and hold that in their back pocket as a savior for when they start seeing diminish returns on stand-alone films.

Or maybe this is just a rumor from a tabloid and a complete fabrication. Only time will tell. But it is always fun to speculate. What are you hoping for after the Sequel Trilogy wraps up? Let us know in the comments.

I mean this is nothing too surprising. Lucasfilm confirmed a bit ago that they have no plans of stopping star wars as longs as people want to see it and judging by the box office of just one movie i’d say there is easily 30 years of star wars films in our future (minimum). I think, or more accurately hope, that they will finish the new saga trilogy with episode 9, then switch gears to another trilogy like obi-wan or Old Republic, then after that start the next trilogy of episodes X, XI, XII. If there were no gaps between trilogies then it would feel less special IMO. I like the trilogy story arc format. I think snoke will be defeated and the first order will surrender at the end of XI and we will have a new story for X with cameos or mentor roles for the current cast. Perhaps some variation of the galactic invasion story or something new altogether.

I agree with you on the gaps between trilogies. Though each movie is its own story, each trilogy tells a larger story and should have some gap. We’ll have to see. I’m just happy at this point to see a time where there are more good Star Wars movies than bad ones, though Episode III was pretty good for the most part.

I’m all about an Old Republic trilogy. I’ve enjoyed a lot of the material in the new canon, but I admit I am getting tired of the OT era and characters. Rogue One may be the exception as far as my excitement goes, but overall I’m ready to move on. Not really looking forward to the Han Solo film (or even the upcoming comic series). He was a great character, and may he rest in peace, but I don’t need his whole life fleshed out on screen. Han Solo may even be a good film, but lets do something totally unrelated to the OT next. Shoot, I’d even be up for a prequel era film, but especially for something far removed like TOR era, which could be epic in scope as well.

Though I’m not getting “tired” of the OT like you say, I think there would be some freshness in exploring alternate timelines and characters. The Old Republic storylines and characters are quite compelling. It will be interesting to see the reactions to a non Skywalker centered movie as the first spin off movie as well with Rogue One. I think the success of Rogue One has a lot riding on it, especially for future spin off movies.

Yeah, I think the Han Solo film is a mistake… especially re-casting Harrison Ford. It would have to be something truly amazing for me to overcome this feeling because even if it is “good” I will still feel like what’s the point.
It’s too bad the Boba Fett film or whatever Trank was working on has fell off the map.

I want this so bad. I want a trilogy where the Sith were an army, pre-Rule of Two, with the third movie ending with Darth Bane and his apprentice. Darth Bane is, after all, the only old Sith Lord who is still canon.

Here’s my prediction for the next 10 films (If possible)

Star Wars: The Old Republic I: The Fallen Jedi
Star Wars: The Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Star Wars: The Old Republic III: Fall of the Republic
Force Hunt: A Star Wars Story (Likely Zack Snyder’s idea of his own Star Wars film)
Delta Command: A Star Wars Story (Republic Commando remake)
    An adaption of Twilight Company
Star Wars Episode X: An Order’s Dawn
Star Wars Episode XI: Wrath of the Hegemony
Star Wars Episode XII: Rise of the Knights
    Obi Wan’s Journey

    What you do think guys?

Old Republic MAY actually happen now. That’d be keeno.

And I agree we’ll have another saga trilogy nestled in there too.

Republic Commando’s would be amazing. But, I have a feeling they’re still going to keep away from the Prequel era stuff.

      I’m sorry – I just couldn’t resist on some of these. 🙂

      1. Star Wars: Padawan Taken

(Set a decade before TPM, Qui-Gon Jinn’s young apprentice has been kidnapped by Zygerrian traffickers. He uses his special set of skills to track down Obi-Wan’s captors and make them pay dearly for their grave misstep.)

      2. Star Wars: Ben Kenobi and the Raiders of the Lost Holocron

(Set in between ROTS and ANH, Ben sets off on an adventure to stop the evil Empire from recovering the lost holocron of Darth Revan. The Emperor believes that the possession of the ancient artifact would make his armies invincible in battle, spelling certain doom for the galaxy.)

      3. Star Wars: Ben Kenobi and the Sith Temple of Doom

(Set in between ROTS and ANH – After arriving on Onderon, Ben is asked by a desperate village of beast riders to find a mystical stone. He agrees, and stumbles upon a secret Sith cult plotting a terrible plan in the catacombs of the palace of Iziz. Ben soon discovers that the palace was built atop the ancient ruins of a Sith temple which lay deep in the catacombs.)

      4. Star Wars: Ben Kenobi and the Fool’s Crusade

(Set in between ROTS and ANH – Ben Kenobi acquires Qui-Gon’s old diary that holds clues and a map with no names to unlock the secret of immortality. Following the clues leads Ben to his homeworld of Stewjon where he discovers that the next clue rests with a famed archaeologist, who happens to be Ben’s brother, who has unfortunately fallen into Imperial hands. Ben sets off to rescue his brother from the clutches of the Empire. However, upon retrieving Dr. Kenobi, the rescue mission turns into a race to find the secret of immortality before the Emperor – who plans to use it for complete galactic domination.)

      5. Star Wars Episode X – A Fallen Hero

(Set 20 years after Episode IX – Following a horrific massacre at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant by a group claiming to be the long dead order of the Knights of Ren, Grand Master Rey Dameron embarks on a mission with her son and padawan, Lucas Dameron, to uncover the identity and whereabouts of the attackers. A surprising revelation sets events in motion that may finally be the undoing of the Jedi.

      6. Star Wars Episode XI – Journal of the Whills

(Following the death of his mother and the dispersion of the Jedi, Lucas Dameron seeks answers in the ancient Jedi temple on Ahch-To, where he is visited by the ghost of his grandfather, Luke Skywalker. His grandfather tells him that the last hope for the Jedi may lie in the secrets of a hidden text in an ancient temple on Devaron. The discovery of the fabled text, the Journal of the Whills, long believed to be a myth among the Jedi, may give Lucas the edge he needs to restore balance to a galaxy in chaos.)

      7. Star Wars Episode XII – Legacy of the Jedi

(After achieving full mastery of the Force through the discovery of arcane teachings in an ancient temple, Lucas Dameron sets out to bring balance once and for all as he unleashes the powers of Ashla and Bogan, the lightside and the dark, on the enemies of the Jedi.)

      8. Star Wars: Old Republic – The Fall of Moraband

(The Ancient Sith Empire has risen from obscurity and attempts to reclaim its old homeworld from the Republic. The war that sparked the age old rivalry between the Jedi and Sith begins here.)

      9. Star Wars: Old Republic – Rise of the Mandalorians

(The Sith join forces with Mandalore to strike at the heart of the Republic. Will the Jedi be able to defend against such a threat?)

      10. Star Wars: Old Republic – The Scourge of Malachor

(The Jedi Revan leads his forces into a final battle against the forces of the Sith Empire and Mandalore that will decide the fate of the galaxy.)

I like the idea that Obi Wan spent the whole time living as a hermit on Tatooine between ROTS and ANH! Such a shame if they give him a bunch of action packed adventures between the movies, it diminishes his stoicism and pathos.

No, I think that is most probable. They have made half of their money back from the purchase of Episode VII alone it would seem. I’m unsure, but I’ve seen some sources say that Episode VII cost roughly 200M to make, and made over 2 billion. Nothing to do at this point but make more movies and print more money.

I feel like the movies show why Owen would be leary of Anakin or the Jedi in general, but not Obi-Wan personally. It seems like Owen in A New Hope knows Obi-Wan better than what we see in the prequels. It’s a relationship that I’d like to see expanded.

The problem with Kennedy’s comments is that it limits the outcome of the ST. We already know that Kylo Ren is a Solo. Will Rey be a Skywalker or Solo? If not, and if there aren’t any more siblings, then we can basically expect Ren and Rey to get together to have at least one kid, so that the Skywalker family can continue.

        Only so many options.

I don’t see much story with an Obi-wan movie set between Episodes 3 and 4 that would be interesting… maybe something where he leaves Tatooine and has to stay undercover to not expose himself as a Jedi. But a trilogy of movies?? That’s pushing it.

Did Obi-Wan really watch over Luke? He gave the boy to Owen and Beru and went off on his own into the desert. His encounter with adult Luke felt coincidental, not planned. Especially with the PT, I don’t see why Obi-Wan didn’t raise Luke himself and train him as a Jedi when he still was a child.

Anyway, I can see Obi-Wan having a handful of missions over 20 years as he continues to grow in the ways of the Force.

He might have had other things to do as well, but I imagine he never left Tatooine. Giving him a handful of missions is fine, but giving him three films worth of stuff to do pushes the credibility for me. The way he was spoken about in ANH always gave me the impression he was just by himself in the desert for all those years. I do hope we get to see Ewan McGregor again as Obi-Wan, be it in one or three films. He brought that character to life.

I was wondering also if they would ever re-make the original trilogy movies since they will look incredibly out-dated 10 years from now especially considering that by 2020 a large majority of movies under the “Star Wars” name will have been made in the modern era. I think it’s going to depend on how Rogue One does. There’s going to be substantial pressure on that movie to perform since making infinite Star Wars films will require Disney to stray away from the core story of Star Wars on the big screen.

We’ll see how non-freak-nerd fans deal with a film that doesn’t have anything to do with the main cast.

And deals with events where we already know the outcome. Yes, they steal the plans, no, none of them matter in the larger story. I get Disney wanting to mine the OT, but I’m just not sure general audiences at large are going to care about this movie.

It has Star Wars in the name. Of course they’re going to care about it. The prequels showed us that people don’t care about the content of a movie as long as it’s called Star Wars. Anything is good enough to see in theaters.

Prequels, whatever you think about how they turned out, are STILL the core storyline though, and people know Obi Wan, Vader, and Yoda, so it’s an easier sell. Explaining to casuals and non fans (a big,BIG part of TFA’s BO) why they should care enough about a movie that isn’t part of the Episodes, and has a central story where we already know the resolution is going to be a real test of this whole “Stories” conceit.

Yes, I was quite disappointed with Kasdan’s (and by extension, Abrams’ and Arndt’s) work on TFA…. having raised my expectations post TESB and ROTJ, I was hoping for great things…… but the resulting TFA makes me worried about the HAN SOLO story.

It is my hope that Felicity Jones is playing an undercover Princess Leia in Rogue One… that we don’t even find out she is Leia until the end of the movie. Then in a couple of years we’ll have our new Han Solo. At that point, all we’d need is someone to play Luke and then Disney can start making movies that start off mid-OT (Shadows of the Empire?) and as the cast gets older they start filling in the gap between ROTJ and TFA. A Jedi Academy triology could detail Ben Solo’s fall from grace and the rise of Snoke. If done well, they can spend the next 20-30 years making movies with a new “Big Three.” I’d also love to see the cast from TFA add plenty of post-sequel triology content over all that time as well.

Let’s see a proper anakin in the clone wars then jump to Vader. Vader destroying the Jedi and his sideline agenda! How amazing, then we could have some good memories of how anakin should have been!! Star Wars is Vader! Maybe 9-12 if there’s a story…

I’m still wondering how Disney thinks it is going to sell a movie about a guy they just killed in their first movie for the franchise…? Who, other than hardcore fans, are going to want to see an “early years” movie about Han Solo? Didn’t Disney tell us they want to make movies that they can market to a “wider audience”? So why then make a movie about a dead guy that only hardcore fans would appreciate? Don’t get me wrong, I am a hardcore fan who would appreciate it if done well, but Disney just seems to be confused in its market outreach…?

Plus it’s all downhill after Infinity War, You can’t really top that in terms of storylines and they are down to their C-Listers now far as material. That’s exactly how it’s going to go. Already I can tell interest in these films is waning. Poeople aren’t freaking out over the trailers the way they used to. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few other stories. Obviously one or more Obi Wan movies and the continuation of the sequel trilogies, but let’s see some older period stuff. Say a Darth Bane trilogy (since he is cannon via The Clone Wars). And possibly pull in something even older then that from the Ulic Qel Droma era. And lastly even something everyone wants, a Darth Plagaus movie

I think that the Old Republic would be a good time-period to tap, just simply on the virtue that it is a time where tons of Jedi fought tons of Sith. None of that “the Sith are extinct and there are only 2 of them” bullshit. It would be nice to see a squad of, say, 7 Jedis doing cat-and-mouse hunting of 6 Sith in some jungle; and that’s something that literally can not be found in any other SW film without breaking canon, so Old Republic has a huge leg-up in my opinion.
