UPDATE! Is This the First Line from The Force Awakens Opening Crawl?

SWTFA-PosterBack in 2012, Fantasy Flight Games released the X-Wing Miniatures Game – a tactical ship-to-ship combat game where the players are able to control starships, and face them against each other in fast-paced space combat. Now it appears that the company will be releasing a special The Force Awakens edition of the game, which synopsis may very well show us the first line from the movie’s opening crawl.

One of our readers sent us several photos of the new game. The game is identical with the original, but is using elements from The Force Awakens. For example the new miniatures are the blue Resistance X-Wing and two First Order TIE Fighters with the white wings. Also you have BB-8 as a companion and so on.

But the most interesting thing about the new edition is the synopsis found on the back of the box:

It’s a time of uncertainty. Unrest grips the galaxy as the influence of
the First Order spreads, but a glimmer of hope remains in the heroic
forces of the Resistance. As they struggle against the dark might of
the enemy, these brave heroes may yet awaken the skill and strength
needed to forge a new future…

As you can see, this very well can be an official vague synopsis for The Force Awakens as well. Or even better. This text could actually reveal the first line from the opening crawl that will appear on the big screen this December.

UPDATE!

In their original game, released back in 2012, Fantasy Flight Games used for the synopsis of the game, the first line from the opening crawl of A New Hope – “It is a period of civil war”. The rest of the text was different. So if this is the case again, then here’s your first look at the opening crawl of The Force Awakens! 🙂

Opening Crawl

It definitely has the Star Wars vibe in it. And Just for fun, you can make your own crawl with the new line HERE.

The game will probably be released on Force Friday and with respect to the company we won’t post the photos and spoil the fun. You just have to wait 2 more weeks. 🙂

Special thanks to ArynCrinn for the heads up.

Not really. “It is a period of civil war.” sets up a clear conflict, we’re going to see two sides of a war in progress. “It is a time of uncertainty.” sounds like the whole of the crawl should read:
        .
It is a time of uncertainty. There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend’s hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o’clock…. (Pan down to planet and stardestroyer)
        .
        Hoping for better.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Lightsaber of Luke skywalker, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst slice thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals …

I hope this is not a similar reboot on ANH? If so I am going to be very disappointed! The “Legends” books did a great job of developing the story…..not all were good, but some were fantastic and would have made great cinema……

This. Just start off with “Unrest grips the galaxy.” It sets the stage and I like the alliteration. Lose “It’s a time of uncertainty” altogether. Uncertainty would accompany unrest, so it’s redundant.

            ZZZZZZZZ…

            Wouldn’t that???

It is the first expression in the opening crawl of Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. (As I wrote in the comment…)

            Ask its writer.

The original comment was referring to the full text from the game, being the entire opening crawl of the film.
So “it’s too short”, because it’s not enough for the full crawl.

I see – I thought you were referring to the first sentence only (because it was mentioned in the article that the company used different text in case of the ANH set.)

It’s not so much background to the game, as it is a series of words which casually describe the time period the game is set in.

The love interest for Rey will be Poe I think. It would also be interesting if they have Phasma become a love interest for Finn or Poe.

I’m willing to bet Finn and Rey are related. There is a reason the last names haven’t been revealed…One is Solo and the other is a Skywalker. They are first cousins imo..Or perhaps half siblings. There is no other reason to hide the names.

I’d be shocked if at least one of them isnt revealed to be a Skywalker before this trilogy ends. Disney is playing up the nostalgia with this film. The name Skywalker is iconic.

I have to read Aftermath, if the First Order is “spreading” that indicates that it was originally a small remnant? What was there before it started spreading? How has the Rebel Alliance only got a glimmer of hope? (What major thing happened to so weaken them?)What’s written on games is not usually the whole synopsis. I just hope they can actually make this film work!

    • August 18, 2015 at 1:48 pm
      Permalink

The Rebel Alliance did form a New Republic shortly after the Battle of Endor… and it seems they spent some time tracking down remnants of the Empire.
So more importantly.. what happened to the New Republic?

      • August 18, 2015 at 2:02 pm
        Permalink

The Republic (or New Republic) could still be around. The problem is that it could be seen as an ineffective government that has had a lot of political infighting over the decades since the fall of the Empire.

So the First Order has formed and is growing in influence. They are taking over the Outer Rim planets, and so the Republic is funding and militarily supporting the Resistance in the Outer Rim.

I am going to guess that Leia works as a Senator helping to advise the Resistance. Poe could be with the Republic who is working to train Resistance pilots.

        • August 18, 2015 at 6:58 pm
          Permalink

I don’t think you’re too far off. That’s about what I would assume is the state of things as well, though I think the New Republic itself is probably a little better off than that. They’re just in a different sector of the galaxy, but support the Resistance because they see the threat of the First Order growing. Similar to the U.S. backing the French Resistance in WWII. Something along those lines. I also wouldn’t doubt that Leia quit being a senator for the New Republic to actually become the head of the Resistance. Some of the rumors that have come out sound like she’s their leader.

The original game had a similar bit of text, starting with the first line of A New Hope’s opening crawl (i.e. “It is a period of civil war”).

I think it’s certainly plausible that the first line of The Force Awaken’s crawl will be “It is a time of uncertainty.”

Basically, the first paragraph needs to set the overall feel and political scene. How are things in the galaxy at the moment? What conflict is happening and who are the sides?. “Uncertainty” seems like a suitable word here.

The 2nd and 3rd paragraphs need to set the scene for what is happening at the start of the story. In this case, there will certainly be some mention about a lightsaber/jedi artefact being discovered on the remote planet of Jakku. It will tells us that Leia has sent Poe Dameron to investigate the reports, and how it has also gained the attention of the first order who are on their way… (ellipsis included).

Unless J.J. Abrams is an awful filmmaker, or simply lacks a solid understanding of the tone of the past films in the series, there will be no scene of a lightsaber falling to the ground. For the film to open like that, the opening crawl would need to set that up; explaining why Luke’s lightsaber is drifting through space. We would then need to see it crash on Jakku, then see it get obtained. Then we would need some kind of scene where Leia talks about it and sends Poe to check it out, then we’d see Poe travel there, meet up with the locals… all before we cut to the First Order arriving in Scene #3.

Ever since that SDCC revealed actual scene numbers, makingstarwars.net’s “lightsaber in space opening shot” rumour has been confirmed to be false. I don’t know why they still think it’s real.

Leia doesn’t have the lightsaber… not too begin with at least.

Just ask yourself… Why did Leia send Poe to Jakku?* Why do Kylo Ren and the First Order show up there?* Why is Kylo Ren interested in finding BB-8? Are the whole first 2/3rs of the movie about The First Order trying to track down Finn? Why do they go to see Maz Kanata? Why does Maz Kanata give the lightsaber to Leia?*

        (* indicates confirmed plot information)

I’m quite certain that Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber is to TFA as the Death Star plans were to ANH… but I don’t think we’ll be seeing any lightsabers drifting through space.

I still think it’d be cool if it turns out there was a massive anti-Force witch hunt post-ROTJ, with the masses not recognizing a difference between Light and Dark, but just seeing wizards with too much power. The ST could thus partly be about the galaxy at large coming to peace with Force usage again.
