UPDATE! Is This the First Line from The Force Awakens Opening Crawl?

SWTFA-PosterBack in 2012, Fantasy Flight Games released the X-Wing Miniatures Game – a tactical ship-to-ship combat game where the players are able to control starships, and face them against each other in fast-paced space combat. Now it appears that the company will be releasing a special The Force Awakens edition of the game, which synopsis may very well show us the first line from the movie’s opening crawl.

One of our readers sent us several photos of the new game. The game is identical with the original, but is using elements from The Force Awakens. For example the new miniatures are the blue Resistance X-Wing and two First Order TIE Fighters with the white wings. Also you have BB-8 as a companion and so on.

But the most interesting thing about the new edition is the synopsis found on the back of the box:

It’s a time of uncertainty. Unrest grips the galaxy as the influence of
the First Order spreads, but a glimmer of hope remains in the heroic
forces of the Resistance. As they struggle against the dark might of
the enemy, these brave heroes may yet awaken the skill and strength
needed to forge a new future…

As you can see, this very well can be an official vague synopsis for The Force Awakens as well. Or even better. This text could actually reveal the first line from the opening crawl that will appear on the big screen this December.

In their original game, released back in 2012, Fantasy Flight Games used for the synopsis of the game, the first line from the opening crawl of A New Hope – “It is a period of civil war”. The rest of the text was different. So if this is the case again, then here’s your first look at the opening crawl of The Force Awakens! 🙂

Opening Crawl

It definitely has the Star Wars vibe in it. And Just for fun, you can make your own crawl with the new line HERE.

The game will probably be released on Force Friday and with respect to the company we won’t post the photos and spoil the fun. You just have to wait 2 more weeks. 🙂

Special thanks to ArynCrinn for the heads up.

    So I’m not reading this…

  • August 18, 2015 at 12:54 pm

I hope, the first lines of the real opening crawl will be MUCH better.

    • August 18, 2015 at 2:36 pm

It reminds of A New Hope opening ALOT though…

      • August 18, 2015 at 4:52 pm

Just like every other aspect of this movie that we know so far.

      • August 18, 2015 at 10:30 pm

Not really. “It is a period of civil war.” sets up a clear conflict, we’re going to see two sides of a war in progress. “It is a time of uncertainty.” sounds like the whole of the crawl should read:
It is a time of uncertainty. There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, erm, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base, that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend’s hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o’clock…. (Pan down to planet and stardestroyer)
        Hoping for better.

        • August 19, 2015 at 1:12 am

Then did he raise on high the Holy Lightsaber of Luke skywalker, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst slice thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals …

          • August 19, 2015 at 7:13 pm

And you get an up-vote for being old enough to recognize it 🙂

      • August 19, 2015 at 3:08 am

I hope this is not a similar reboot on ANH? If so I am going to be very disappointed! The “Legends” books did a great job of developing the story…..not all were good, but some were fantastic and would have made great cinema……

    • August 18, 2015 at 6:11 pm

      it’d too ‘wordy’ IMO.

      • August 19, 2015 at 7:11 am

This. Just start off with “Unrest grips the galaxy.” It sets the stage and I like the alliteration. Lose “It’s a time of uncertainty” altogether. Uncertainty would accompany unrest, so it’s redundant.

  • August 18, 2015 at 12:57 pm

So this means what? Don’t you think we already know this?????

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm

The synopsis was kind of obvious beforehand.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:01 pm

The Force AWAKENS, kind of figured this out already.

    • August 18, 2015 at 7:22 pm

i think i know the hole movie ok so we start of us with a shot of the new plant then a shot of her in the market then her going to her `house’ then we cut to the sine with finn in the battle and he relizes he used the force and the new bad guy since it and he try to find the persone that used the force not know it was finn and fin crashes in the new plant and we get a shot of her ridering the speed bike to him and fine him at the market after he got new cloth and he was lookine and she try to help him becouse hes heart and the u pce the rist.

      • August 18, 2015 at 7:24 pm

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:09 pm

Sounds vague. Nothing we didn’t get from the teasers.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:13 pm

Who can tell that ISIS brought up inspiration of the First Order? Can I pick my nose smaug?

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:16 pm

I doubt that this is the official opening crawl. It’s a little too vague. If this was on the back of one of the hundreds of Star Wars novels, would you read it?

    • August 18, 2015 at 1:49 pm

      It’s also too short.

      • August 18, 2015 at 9:26 pm

Episode III, opening crawl, first sentence: War!

        • August 18, 2015 at 10:59 pm

          Re: “War!”
Wouldn’t that be a bit redundant after a saga title of Star Wars?

          • August 18, 2015 at 11:37 pm

            Wouldn’t that???

It is the first expression in the opening crawl of Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. (As I wrote in the comment…)

            Ask its writer.

            (Reference: short)

        • August 19, 2015 at 2:12 am

The original comment was referring to the full text from the game, being the entire opening crawl of the film.
So “it’s too short”, because it’s not enough for the full crawl.

          • August 19, 2015 at 2:51 am

I see – I thought you were referring to the first sentence only (because it was mentioned in the article that the company used different text in case of the ANH set.)

            Not important…

      • August 19, 2015 at 6:26 am

It’s too short. This is only two sentences, whereas they are usually 3-ish

    • August 18, 2015 at 2:03 pm

It’s not so much a synopsis for the film as it is a bit of background for the game.

      • August 18, 2015 at 8:12 pm

It’s not so much background to the game, as it is a series of words which casually describe the time period the game is set in.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:24 pm

Nothing to see here…..move along……..move along

    • August 18, 2015 at 1:31 pm

That only works on the weak minded… hey wait! Where is everyone going???

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I just want to know who Rey’s love interest will be! Poe perhaps?

    • August 18, 2015 at 6:24 pm

She may not even be into guys. She could very well be face hugging Captain Phasma when all is said, and done.

    • August 18, 2015 at 7:04 pm

      She will fall for Kylo.

    • August 18, 2015 at 7:06 pm

I’m gonna guess she will be in one with Boyega? Unless a different person comes into the picture.

      • August 19, 2015 at 12:27 am

The love interest for Rey will be Poe I think. It would also be interesting if they have Phasma become a love interest for Finn or Poe.

I’m willing to bet Finn and Rey are related. There is a reason the last names haven’t been revealed…One is Solo and the other is a Skywalker. They are first cousins imo..Or perhaps half siblings. There is no other reason to hide the names.

I’d be shocked if at least one of them isnt revealed to be a Skywalker before this trilogy ends. Disney is playing up the nostalgia with this film. The name Skywalker is iconic.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:29 pm

I have to read Aftermath, if the First Order is “spreading” that indicates that it was originally a small remnant? What was there before it started spreading? How has the Rebel Alliance only got a glimmer of hope? (What major thing happened to so weaken them?)What’s written on games is not usually the whole synopsis. I just hope they can actually make this film work!

    • August 18, 2015 at 1:48 pm

The Rebel Alliance did form a New Republic shortly after the Battle of Endor… and it seems they spent some time tracking down remnants of the Empire.
So more importantly.. what happened to the New Republic?

      • August 18, 2015 at 2:02 pm

The Republic (or New Republic) could still be around. The problem is that it could be seen as an ineffective government that has had a lot of political infighting over the decades since the fall of the Empire.

So the First Order has formed and is growing in influence. They are taking over the Outer Rim planets, and so the Republic is funding and militarily supporting the Resistance in the Outer Rim.

I am going to guess that Leia works as a Senator helping to advise the Resistance. Poe could be with the Republic who is working to train Resistance pilots.

        • August 18, 2015 at 6:58 pm

I don’t think you’re too far off. That’s about what I would assume is the state of things as well, though I think the New Republic itself is probably a little better off than that. They’re just in a different sector of the galaxy, but support the Resistance because they see the threat of the First Order growing. Similar to the U.S. backing the French Resistance in WWII. Something along those lines. I also wouldn’t doubt that Leia quit being a senator for the New Republic to actually become the head of the Resistance. Some of the rumors that have come out sound like she’s their leader.

        • August 18, 2015 at 9:31 pm

Just like the league of nations in europe during the 1920’s, 1930’s as an evil that originated from one crazy, twisted megolamaniac spread across the majority of europe.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:31 pm

official or not it’s totally vague and tells us nothing really

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:34 pm

well, it says that the resistance is the entity that awakens something, that is a new angle isn’t it?

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:36 pm

The original game had a similar bit of text, starting with the first line of A New Hope’s opening crawl (i.e. “It is a period of civil war”).

I think it’s certainly plausible that the first line of The Force Awaken’s crawl will be “It is a time of uncertainty.”

Basically, the first paragraph needs to set the overall feel and political scene. How are things in the galaxy at the moment? What conflict is happening and who are the sides?. “Uncertainty” seems like a suitable word here.

The 2nd and 3rd paragraphs need to set the scene for what is happening at the start of the story. In this case, there will certainly be some mention about a lightsaber/jedi artefact being discovered on the remote planet of Jakku. It will tells us that Leia has sent Poe Dameron to investigate the reports, and how it has also gained the attention of the first order who are on their way… (ellipsis included).

Unless J.J. Abrams is an awful filmmaker, or simply lacks a solid understanding of the tone of the past films in the series, there will be no scene of a lightsaber falling to the ground. For the film to open like that, the opening crawl would need to set that up; explaining why Luke’s lightsaber is drifting through space. We would then need to see it crash on Jakku, then see it get obtained. Then we would need some kind of scene where Leia talks about it and sends Poe to check it out, then we’d see Poe travel there, meet up with the locals… all before we cut to the First Order arriving in Scene #3.

Ever since that SDCC revealed actual scene numbers, makingstarwars.net’s “lightsaber in space opening shot” rumour has been confirmed to be false. I don’t know why they still think it’s real.

    • August 18, 2015 at 2:45 pm

Wow, I just got credited for something on the site

    • August 18, 2015 at 3:56 pm

Leia ha the lightsaber. Its No a drift.

      • August 19, 2015 at 1:57 am

Leia doesn’t have the lightsaber… not too begin with at least.

Just ask yourself… Why did Leia send Poe to Jakku?* Why do Kylo Ren and the First Order show up there?* Why is Kylo Ren interested in finding BB-8? Are the whole first 2/3rs of the movie about The First Order trying to track down Finn? Why do they go to see Maz Kanata? Why does Maz Kanata give the lightsaber to Leia?*

        (* indicates confirmed plot information)

I’m quite certain that Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber is to TFA as the Death Star plans were to ANH… but I don’t think we’ll be seeing any lightsabers drifting through space.

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:40 pm

Sounds a lot like Episode 4…

  • August 18, 2015 at 1:54 pm

u missed the fact that the force awakes is a xerox copy of a new hope ?

  • August 18, 2015 at 2:24 pm

What a bunch of moaners. I like it

  • August 18, 2015 at 2:28 pm

I still think it’d be cool if it turns out there was a massive anti-Force witch hunt post-ROTJ, with the masses not recognizing a difference between Light and Dark, but just seeing wizards with too much power. The ST could thus partly be about the galaxy at large coming to peace with Force usage again.

  • August 18, 2015 at 2:50 pm

I thought they weren t officially using Roman numeral numbered episodes in the title & crawl anymore?

    • August 18, 2015 at 2:58 pm

I’d heard they just weren’t using numbers in marketing and stuff…
      Never anything about roman numerals.

    • August 18, 2015 at 2:59 pm

Ugh, the Roman numerals were only with the PT posters and marketing. They have returned to the OT marketing. Why is it so hard for people to understand this…..

      • August 18, 2015 at 3:52 pm

        “OT Marketing”
        A New slogan.

      • August 18, 2015 at 4:06 pm

..and the episode number will be in the crawl. They just aren’t using it in the marketing.

  • August 18, 2015 at 3:04 pm

At least it’s not ‘The taxation of trade routes is in dispute.”.

    • August 18, 2015 at 7:12 pm

      We must rely on negotiations,,..yawn

    • August 18, 2015 at 8:09 pm

I’d rather a plot around “Turmoil has engulfed the Galatic Republic.” then “It’s a time of uncertainty”.

  • August 18, 2015 at 3:32 pm

    Episode VII

Heretofore commences a duration of quasi-ambiguity.

  • August 18, 2015 at 4:50 pm

oh I dont give a fuck about the opening scrawl give me real news man wtf! this is a slow news day

    • August 18, 2015 at 6:22 pm

The opening crawl is the vital backstory to the film! How is this no news?

  • August 18, 2015 at 4:51 pm

Yeah I wanna know who Rey’s love interest is

    • August 18, 2015 at 6:38 pm

Who says she has one? Maybe she will go through this film…solo. Lol

But if she does end up with someone my guess is Poe judging by the fact that he seems to be the “flyboy” of the new trilogy

    • August 19, 2015 at 1:03 am

It’s definitely not Boyega lol for obvious reasons lol

I think her love interest is either Poe or Kylo

  • August 18, 2015 at 5:13 pm

Gives a bit more background on the dynamic, looks like the Empire is rising again. What interests me is the ‘glimmer of hope’ why is the Resistance on the run and how are things so dark that there is but a glimmer of hope?!

As an aside, the X-Wing game is amazing. This will totally be my first Force Friday purchase!

    • August 19, 2015 at 2:20 am

Yeah, I’ve been hoping to see some sort of prequel or sequel trilogy content in the game for a while now. While I’m not holding my breath for the former, I’m sure glad to be able to add some T-70s and First Order TIE’s to my collection.

A T-70 may be my first repaint for the game… I want Poe’s black and orange fighter.

It will be interesting to see if the T-70s differ from the T-65s in the game at all.

  • August 18, 2015 at 5:27 pm

    all wrong!!!!!

  • August 18, 2015 at 5:41 pm

Probably not the actual first line. JJ/Disney are too secretive to let something like that slip.

  • August 18, 2015 at 5:54 pm

    Where are the 3 paragraphs?

  • August 18, 2015 at 6:12 pm

It worries me how close to the text of a new hope this sounds… The dark forces of the first order and the heroic forces of the resistance? So much for shades of grey. Also, a tiny glimmer of hope? It sounds like Endor accomplished nothing. Our heroes are still a tiny resistance group? We have seen evil as the underdog in the prequels and good a the underdog in the originals, let’s see a Cold War of EQUALS. No more of these “last hope for the Galaxy” cliches

  • August 18, 2015 at 6:12 pm

Seriously? What is wrong with you?

  • August 18, 2015 at 6:26 pm

The new republic is the first order you nerds, as the empire has decade into nothing the rebels have taken control of all The old Empires space crafts shuttles and fighters { ie why waste a good thing} And combined with the old stormtroopers who were only soldiers doing there job, they are now known as the first order after the Empire,,the resistance are the old troopers who could not surrender and were loyal. It is now a reversed situation, as most political parties get bigger they become an Empire of their own..The rebels are now turning into an empire greed has taken over uncertainty..Hence why luke is needed to bring balance back..Siths have taken control hunting the jedi order has begun as luke’s training of new jedi’s has been discovered a new space station has begun …I know, i see the future…What a load of rubbish but how close am i? LOL

  • August 18, 2015 at 7:46 pm

It’s a time of uncertainty……There are practical effects on both sides…..

  • August 18, 2015 at 8:16 pm

My opinion is close to the *anonymous18:26.
For some reason imperials and republicans a decade so after the batlle of jakku reunite into a solid state once more creating a galactic federation of united planets. The economic crisis and poverty of the post civil war galaxy born an army of desperate and unemployment youth. This fact compined with the bankruptcy of many large industries create the necessary core inside the armed forces and the industrial community to come in surface a plan for a coup. What do you think?

  • August 18, 2015 at 9:07 pm

Kind of lame that rebels are still the underdogs. I guess ROTJ didn’t really matter.

  • August 18, 2015 at 9:40 pm

The StarWars.com Crawl creator is crappy as hell

    • August 18, 2015 at 10:05 pm

Indeed. I couldn’t get a link to mine and the embed code is huge and not editable.

  • August 18, 2015 at 10:12 pm

i’d rather it be “a quiet 30 years after the destruction of the 2nd death star…”

  • August 19, 2015 at 12:34 am

At some point are you going to start IP banning the people posting racist crap?

    • August 19, 2015 at 6:54 am

Seriously. This really needs to happen.

  • August 19, 2015 at 5:42 am

That’s not Hollywood propaganda. It’s reality. I see it all the time with only the occasional inverse.

  • August 19, 2015 at 7:29 am

You guys were desperate to post something new, weren’t you? I think this site may need an editor because this is ridiculous.

  • August 24, 2015 at 9:37 pm

I’m not sure about Star Wars, but I’m sure Obama would like it.

  • August 24, 2015 at 9:39 pm

That crawl is like the vaguest description I’ve ever come across in my life. It’s like it was written by the prophets from The Life of Brian.

  • August 31, 2015 at 7:38 pm

Artist Drew Struzan whose new Star Wars poster was recently released says that The Force Awakens might be the best entry yet. On ScreenRant.
