Star Wars Rebels Review: “The Siege of Lothal”

the-siege-of-lothalFINALLY!!! It feels like an eternity since I first watched “The Siege Of Lothal” at Star Wars: Celebration and I could not WAIT to write an official review for it when it aired. “Fire Across The Galaxy” ended with quite the reveal of Fulcrum being Ahsoka and how Darth Vader was getting involved in capturing the Rebel cell on Lothal. Quite the cliffhanger! Would we see Ahsoka come face to face with her former master? Would Kanan go head to head with a true Dark Lord of the Sith? READ ON TO FIND OUT!!!!!!!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Excerpts from the review:

What worked for me:

– Darth Vader

Vader

I have one word to describe how the writers handled Vader in this one hour special…DAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNNNNNN! They NAILED Darth Vader’s characterization. Vader walks with such a weight and fights with such power, it truly is terrifying. Yes, even in cartoon form. It was nice to see him cut loose a little AS the Dark Lord rather than just plain Anakin from the Clone Wars. We have a tiny glimpse of what Vader’s power level is in the OT and the canon books/comics which have done a good job of showing some of this power, but it’s nice to see it on the actual screen. He basically kicks the crap out of Kanan and Ezra with EASE and they barely escape his clutches. They throw a AT-DP on top of him for goodness sakes! Vader just shrugs it off. Similar to what happened in Marvel Star Wars issue 2. Needless to say, Darth Vader is a force (pun not intended) to be reckoned with!

What didn’t work for me:

– Disguised as…a stormtrooper….

Kanan

THE TINIEST OF NIT PICKS!!!!!!…Can we please stop with our heroes disguising themselves as Stormtroopers? I’m kinda done with it. That’s just me though…

The whole episode is awesome. I think it is like a short Star Wars movie.

“Disgusting themselves as stormtroopers”? Nothing disgusting about it… just a bit predictable 😉

I noticed that and changed it to disguising. Stupid computer! Thanks for not butchering me too badly.

I know, what is the issue in using the enemy armor against them when it’s so effective in infiltrating their facilities? Ex: Luke and Han on the Death Star in ANH.

Vader in the tie was corny and unbelievable and I could not get the image of young Ani out of my head saying to him self ” now this is pod racing”.Though I have to admit this is my only complaint towards this ” cartoon ” so far.

Given Anakin’s piloting exploits in TCW, Vader’s piloting skills in Lords of the Sith, and in light of the fact that he decimated 1/4 of the entire the rebel attack force outside the Death Star in ANH single-handedly (most of which were already shot down before he even arrived), I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch for Vader to be depicted as he was in this show. He didn’t attack the whole fleet. He chased the one ship while avoiding the whole fleet. Vader knew his back-up was on the way and was just arrogant and confident enough to not wait for them to arrive to begin his attack.

      He is just that good:

“He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior.” – Obi-Wan

“The boy is good…no doubts there.” – Watto

WOW WOW WOW….do you even know anything about star wars???? this is to date the most uninformed and dumb comment i have ever read on here… go back to the Star Trek Forums trekkie…..The man is the best pilot in the galaxy and the most powerful Force user in history…to be honest…he was actually just toying with them

I think the point is that no matter your piloting skills – to take out a cruiser with a few shots from a Tie-fighter seems a little unlikely.

Does anyone know where this episode can be purchased? I tried Amazon but it hasn’t been posted yet… I wonder if they’ll hold off on releasing it until Season 2 is really underway

I have not seen this. But, Vader did not kill Kanan and Erza convincing enough ?
Should he encountered them,he must have killed them just by force choking.

I assume he let them leave alive, the shuttle was tracked and it led him to the rebel fleet, obviously he could have destroyed them in seconds, but chose not too. And i think Ahsoka being onboard the ghost stopped him from destroying them from his Tie fighter.

this was the best episode of Rebels to date. i noticed all the voice acting was great too, more polished than season 1, less childish, but still had humour. My only 1 gripe, is too many verbal references spoken to mimic the OT. Us fans know every word uttered from those movies, so hearing them said again is corny, and diminishes them in the OT if overplayed. I gotta bad feelin about this wins for most overplayed sentence. Its only cool when Han says it.

The inquisitor or inquisitors that Darth Vader sends could be the two new ones or the rumored Alieen Zahn character.

Maybe they’re trying to set something up for TFA with the disguised as Storm Trooper thing.

Let me tell you it plainly: THIS EPISODE WAS AWESOME! And it was that for one dark, evil and scary reason — Darth Vader. DV kicks asses of Rebels as it should be. I believe that he would terminate the whole crew including Kanan and Ezra or the latter would turn into a new DV apprentice. Oh, by the way, Asoka is to be killed either.
    Eeer, I’m such a dickhead.

I can’t tell what the intention of your sentence is.
You may have spoiled the end of something for me, but I can’t tell because I literally don’t understand your phrasing.
So yeah, you’re not a dickhead, dicks have better sentence composition.

getting James Earl Jones to reprise his role as vader is special…whatever they paid him was worth it…he absolutely nailed it…which isn’t really that surprising..earl Jones is a legend!!!

TO get a first look at Vaders Tie Fighter Skills was FANTASTIC!!!! he obviously let them go. and could have easily killed everyone… i am curious to know why Ashoka is keeping the fact that she knows it is Anakin from the rest of the Rebel’s. She obviously knows! By the ending you can tell that we wont see vader as much in the season though…and it sucks he will be voiced by someone else. The whole inquisitor thing…i dont like it at all…Vader doesnt need Inquisitors…he can do it all himself…and why were there no Inquisitors in the OT??? thats the main thing i do not like about Rebels…The Inquisitors are lame.

Vader wants Luke alive to become his new apprentice. He didn’t want inquisitors to be involved

There were no inquisitors in the OT, because GL never thought of it. The OT was started about 40 yrs. ago, and the use of inquisitors is only a few yrs. old. Stop trying to understand this through a SW timeline or new canon, and use the real timeline. Star wars 1977, Empire strikes Back 1980, Return of the Jedi 1983. Rebels 2014-15. This is a new era of story telling while trying to fit everything in nicely to the OT. It’s not as easy as people think it is. Furthermore, my guess is, human error will eventually find its way into the new SW canon and corrupt it, so that in 30 yrs. another company that buys it out from Disney will try to scrap the canon and start over. I am going to try to enjoy TFA, but if it truly disappoints, then I’ll just move on.

It’s a very large empire, how do you know that they didn’t exist during the OT. Canon is now part of the story, so just belive it, it really happened. I mean like really

I just want something different. They are paid to be creative. Think of something else. Nit picks are dumb. That’s what they are by nature. No bigs. ☺️

Totally loved the episode. Fantastic to see Vader as the big bad again, I got a wee chill when he said, ”the apprentice lives”
One nitpick, Vader should have blatantly killed the Star Destroyer captain for messing up but as it’s a kids show, I’ll let that go haha
Ditch the lame Inquisitors and have Vader front and centre doing what he does best, hunting down the Rebels!!
Roll on the rest of the season

Overall, this was a fun episode with so many little Star Wars moments!

Kanan in stormtrooper armor (IV), Kanan and Hera arguing in a white corridor with people passing between and around them (V), a woman blowing up after crossing the starship’s door (II), Jedi jumping onto the starship’s door as it flies off (I), etc..
