Confirmation that the Desert Planet in The Force Awakens is Tatooine?

tatooineThere were lots of rumors suggesting that the desert planet in TFA is not Tatooine. For some time now there’s been an image posted on the official Star Wars Celebration page, that could be our biggest confirmation that Tatooine is in The Force Awakens after all.

Admittedly, none of us really know what we are going to see when The Force Awakens premieres this December.  It is possible we can piece things together through trailers and leaks, but it is safe to say JJ Abrams has kept his mystery box tightly shut.

One thing that all signs have pointed to is the beginning of The Force Awakens takes place on a desert planet. We know that a big part of the filming, with principle cast and IMAX aerial footage, took place in Abu Dhabi. Along with the teaser trailer, it is solid confirmation we are going to see a desert planet. There has been debate among fans that it may very well be a different planet. Well, it would seem that the final nail in that debate is hammered in by the image below, from the official Star Wars Celebration page:

Celebration

The planet looks absolutely identical to Tatooine. Here’s Tatooine from the Star Wars Wiki page:

Tatooine

So the big question is, are they really going to use Tatooine for an official TFA announcement, if the planet is not going to be in the movie? I personally really doubt it. I think that it is safe to say, along with Abrams sticking with the Original Trilogy themes, that Tatooine will appear in The Force Awakens. At this point it would seem very odd for it to be any other desert planet.

Tatooine is central to the Skywalker legend. There’s no way it won’t be involved in TFA. I wouldn’t be surprised if the planet is some how even more important than we already think.

Doesn’t mesh with information in the original trilogy between Obi Wan, Luke, and Yoda. Obi Wan would of been lying to hide her identity or he didn’t know her. It would make for unrealistic path for the story to go. I would see that as cheap story development based on how the original story unfolded.
Very few characters are going to be blood related to the original characters, one if not two, but Obi Wan never had offspring as far as I’m concerned, but may have had a love interest somewhere that remains speculative as to any kind of relationship that he had.

Yes, and the reveal of an Obi Wan offspring will give the mass audience, that does not follow any non movie projects, a sense of being lost or that they have missed something, even if it gets explained, its going into ” “Shark Jump” territory.
Anything not hinted at in the past of a main character in the previous films, that can’t give the audience a sense of a previous event to carry over, is a bad story path to take.

What was the point of creating a planet EXACTLY identical than Tatooine? You even have pod racer like engines in it, McQuarrie inspired designs from his Tatooine drawings, extras dressed as those from The Phantom Menace. No rumor would convince me that planet is not Tatooine.

Totally agree. I don’t care if it is or isn’t Tatooine, but there are so many Star Wars things/announcements that feature a picture of Tatooine, it’s hard to label this as proof. It just means that the Star Wars website likes using recognizable Star Wars imagery.

Its definitely tatooine. JJ is meticulously trying to recreate the look and feel of the classic star wars, and tatooine has appeared in 5 of the 6 movies…I just can’t see him passing up a nostalgia opportunity by making a planet that looks and feels EXACTLY like tatooine but only has one sun or something.

You know, I really want to believe that it’s Tatooine, but I’m intrigued by the rumor that it’s actually a melted Hoth.

I remember StarWars.com officially announcing Hoth would be a location in the movie a long time ago (although I can’t find that anywhere now, still looking). Not to mention the SNOWtrooper goggles Rey wears in the trailer.

I’d like to say that the AT-ATs and crashed Star Destroyer in the concept art are clues too, but considering TFA takes place after 30+ years of war, I’ll just sit on that one.

I’m pretty sure there’s moisture vaporators and everything else you’d expect to find on Tatooine in the trailer. There’s definitely a sand crawler in one of the leaked pieces of concept art and there’s nothing that even suggests variations in the environment.

Anyone that ever doubted it’s Tatooine is off their rocker or just desperate for something to talk about or generate hits.

well, it is a point. this article is about where the seen desert is located. and i am saying it dont has to be a ”desert only planet” .

if in star wars every planet would only have one unique environmental feature it would very very unrealistic.
i said ”if” because this is not the case.
some examples are alderaan, naboo and ryloth.

dont get me wrong i strongly believe this desert is on tatooine. i just wanted to point some things out.

I’m not reading your post it’s dumb. Planets in Star Wars are defined by their singular environments. Your real world logic doesn’t fit here, we’re talking about a well loved and defined genre, they’re not going to fuck with the formula much.

Also Alderaan is only seen for a brief moment in Episode 3 and as far as I can tell is something of a world of Swiss Alps, Ryloth is a planet that doesn’t exist at all in canon, and Naboo is an Earth-like planet if Earth were pretty much covered in endless grasslands with a few forested and swampy areas. It doesn’t have extremes really.

you knew much about what i wrote by not reading my post.
and why would you love star wars less only because there are planets that have several different environmental locations?
there is no such rule in star wars that a planet can only have one unique environment.
if you identify the planets, moons etc. only by its environmental feature, then people would be confused of Endor and Kashyyk as well as of Tatooine and Geonosis, to mention only two examples.

The empire must be raging psychotically with anger after what the rebel offensive did to the emperor and the 2nd death star. If rebel spys could intercept an assasination kill list, I bet luke and han would be at the very top, and tatooine would be a prime testing area for a 3rd super weapon of some sort. This is the first place the empire would go to, to set an example. Maybe it won`t be around for long in the new trilogy. It would be a target because of the history tied to rebel heroes. Luke would not be pleased and so would han knowing the empire would blow it up, it would hurt them. Maybe the empire has special plans for this planet, just to score some payback points against the rebels.

In ANH, why does 3PO lie to Luke when he says (referring to the Leia recording for the first time) he’s not quite sure who Leia is and “I think she’s a passenger on our last voyage, a person of some importance I believe…”
WTF?! 3PO knows who Leia is when he says earlier, “There’ll be no escape for the Princess this time”. Plus, he has already conceded that Luke is his new master at this point so it doesn’t make sense for 3PO to start lying at the beginning of his new relationship with Luke. Why is 3PO outright lying about his knowledge of Leia?!

The 3PO memory wipe at the end of ROTS doesn’t matter since it takes place well before the events in ANH obviously.

I don’t care if this is Tatooine, some other desert planet, or some new planet’s version of the Sahara. The important thing to me is the stuff that will be happening there.

I agree. I really don’t give a shit what planets are used as long as the movie is great.

Tatooine, center of the galaxy for no reason whatsoever other than GL’s inability to write something clever for the PT.

Okay, so we can now see who is telling the truth and who is full of shit.

    Bothanspi says its Tatooine.

    Jason Ward says it’s Hoth.

For now, I believe Bothanspi has real information and believe him/her.

Also, even if a planet could warm from ice to a desert in 30 years, would it be covered in sand that quickly? I thought sand formed in deserts over thousands (millions??)of years of wind erosion, etc…

If it is really Tatooine then we can disregard everything else that Jason Ward has said.

Every thing we heard about this movie so far makes it feel like an attempt at the Ultimate Star Wars Movie (TM) by JJ Abrams. Mishmashing key points of previous movies and the Jaina-Jacen storyline. “Its not EU! Defend prequel. Argh” – Star Wars Elitist.

He did not do the same thing with Into Darkness other than poorly homage the movie with several blasts of excellence here and there. For the most part forgettable. Like Indiana Jones IV we can expect the same performance from Ford. Phoning it in for $. Drink the Kool Aid you’re and you’re going to need it.

I agree with most of your points except for that Abrams had some shit writers working on Into Darkness, and that’s the reason the story sucked. His direction is fine, it’s just his love of mystery combined with shitty stories that make it bad. But with Lawrence Kasdan and the ghost of Michael Arndt’s script I’m sure the story will be better than STID. And Ford definitely has been phoning it in lately, but he’ll probably die in this one, which is what he’s wanted since Empire, so I bet he’ll actually give a shit this time.

There is zero evidence that Ford still feels that way three decades later.

I think that art being shown is an old concept art from the original trilogy and I see maybe a few have caught onto it.

The art was from when Princess Leia was to have the rescue role and not Luke.
Then the role was switched to Luke as the rescuer..

I wonder if Rey will be the rescuer of
an old character this time around?

good lord….it is tatooine, it was confirmed to be tatooine the same week it was confirmed serkis was the voice in the backround…you got concept art with the destroyed sailbarge and sarlac tenticals….they also reported in april of 2014 that JJ would be filming tatooine in abu dabi because Tunisia was too dangerous and considered too politically unstable for a major Hollywood production to film there this time around. you also got the first leaked photo’s that are people who are clearly wearing tatooine “fashion” if you will. i highly doubt they would go thru the trouble to recreate a sand planet EXACTLY like tatooine….cmon now….The only other planet it could possibly be would be the sith homeworld…but the sand would be red because of the sky.there is also talk of a cantina scene…from the original cantina. If you dont think this is tatooin and suspect it could be anything but..you are kidding yourself.even the helicopter pilots said it was tatooine in that news clip.

That’s why I thought the original concept art was the clue to the location.
