J.J. Abrams: R2-D2 and C-3PO Have Different Casting Agents.

star wars

J.J. Abrams has been busy lately promoting his book “S”. Yesterday he stopped by MTV News and talked about the Episode 7 release date, R2-D2, C-3PO and more…

On the release date:

“I will say that it is an infinitely better situation now than when they were saying that they wanted it in the summer [of 2015]. “Before I even came onto the project, they were talking about 2015, and they made this announcement very early on, which I understand. I understand why they’d want that, but it didn’t necessarily have anything to do with the reality of where anything was creatively.

I think that it’s a hugely important thing that [the creative process] come first,” Abrams said. “A release date is great, but you have to release something great. To me, the new release date is a huge improvement.”

On C-3PO:

“How do you do ‘Star Wars’ without R2-D2? You know, [R2-D2 and C-3PO] have different agents.”

I couldn’t agree more with Abrams’ position on the release date. May 2015 sounded about a year too early to me when they first announced Episode 7, and it sounds to me like that was probably a concern of Abrams’ from the get-go too. I’d bet good money that the release date is and always has been purely a boardroom decision, and nothing to do with the actual reality of what it will take to get the Star Wars creative machine up and running again.

I’m glad they got the six month delay, and I really wish they’d get the full year’s delay that I’m sure Abrams would have preferred.

I’d be more than happy with a May 2016 release. these films need to live up to a massive reputation. We all speculate on what these films will contain, but, let’s just see what pans out.

Different casting agents? Does this mean two different agents assigned to the characters themselves? Will we not be seeing Anthony Daniels as 3PO? That’d be very unfortunate.

I understand now, haha. It’s early where I am and I’m posting from work so I’m preoccupied. I’m just anxiously waiting for some amount of news and I’m worried that news will be bad. After all of this anticipation, I’d hate for the first big announcement to be a let-down; but yeah, I guess you could say I’m pretty dopey 😉

first off , c-3po and r2d2 are robots with people in it, Kenny baker is old to work r2 d2 anymore and also I do not think Anthony daniels can fit into the outfit anymore, so he might just provide the voice., kinda like James earl jones did for vader,

I’d hate anybody other than Anthony to go into the suit. His actions and manerisms brought loads to the character. Obviously they could bring someone else to copy it, but it would just be so nice to be watching the film and know that the actor and voice actor are actually are both Anthony. Anthony is still very capable of doing the role. In this case, his age is just a number, he still seems like a normal healthy fit guy and could easily sport the suit again. I don’t think it’s right to bring Kenny Baker back because he seems very limited due to his age, and to be honest they don’t need him with all the technology now.

I completely agree. Anthony has said at conventions that he’d be 100% willing to take up the role again if asked. He brings such an incredible amount of life to the character that would not easily be copied or replaced. Kenny Baker is old and I’m sure that coming back at R2 is something he’d like to do, but he is aware of his age and physical state.

Anthony usually seems to keep himself pretty thin, at least from the photos I see of him online. And you can bet that he’s going to go out of his way to make sure he can fit into the Threepio suit if asked.

I agree, his physical performance has always been a huge part of Threepio’s character from the very beginning. Somebody else could probably mimic it to a certain extent, but it’d be like when somebody else voiced Kermit after Jim Henson died… so near, yet so heartbreakingly far.

I don’t know where you got the idea Anthony cant fit in the suit anymore, when we saw him at Celebration Europe he looked just like he did his entire career. Plus, if they wanted him and he wanted to do it, he would lose the weight (even though he doesn’t need to). He’ll be cast, its quite obvious why R2 was announced and that was because you don’t NEED and actor for him, unlike 3PO. So they just went ahead and announced it.

And we know we’re getting 3PO because of JJ’s above comment “What’s a Star Wars movie without R2 and 3PO?”

JJ actually never mentioned 3PO. He said “How do you do star wars without R2D2?”. It was when the other guy said something about the possibility of it being a ‘packaged deal evolving 3PO’, he joked “well you know they have different agents.” I’m assuming 3PO will be back. I really want him back. But hey, maybe JJ has a strong disliking of 3PO and he’s written him out. You never know. But of course I’m pretty sure that’s not going to be the case.

You’re right, my apologies. Thanks for that correction, but I certainly agree. I don’t think Abrams would make a drastic change like that.

Move over C-3PO! Make room for the GONK droid! He’s the new flavor of the month. Deal with it!
