Disney CEO Robert Iger Wants Star Wars: Episode 7 Ready by Summer 2015.

With the announcement that Michael Arndt exits Episode 7, many people begun to wonder if a 2015 release date is still possible. Well according to the latest report Kathleen Kennedy wants the movie to be delayed until 2016 while Disney CEO Robert Iger is on the opposite opinion…

According to a source close to the project:

Kathleen Kennedy and most of the film’s creative team have asked Disney to push the release to 2016, but studio CEO Robert Iger is adamant that Episode VII won’t budge. That has created enormous pressure on all involved, with director J.J. Abrams stepping in to take over scripting duties with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote 1980’s Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, considered the best film in the series.

For his part, Arndt worked exclusively on Episode VII for most of the past year and already had penned a 40- to 50-page treatment before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney in October 2012.

Some sources say Abrams has become autocratic in recent months, wresting some casting control from Kennedy. But others disputed that notion, saying Abrams and Kennedy both have been involved in casting sessions. Unlike Kennedy, Abrams is said to be more in sync with Iger’s desire to meet the 2015 release target — which allows zero margin for error — at all costs.

Still, another project insider dismisses talk of problems and what the writer shuffle means for what is perhaps Hollywood’s most valued franchise. “It’s nothing out of the ordinary,” says the insider. “Almost every big movie changes writers at some point. There’s no drama here.”

It was also mentioned that Iger has a plan of releasing Episode 7 in summer 2015. As we mentioned before this is probably the earliest possible release date after the change of writers. For now August 2015 looks perfect for a release date. Actually it looks like other studios are really avoiding this month. No big movies are scheduled for that otherwise blockbuster heavy month. Maybe the studios know something we don’t…

I seriously doubt this film is released in 2015. If it is it’s going to be a mess.

Under the best of circumstances Abrams moves slowly, now he doesn’t have a script that is anywhere near being ready to film…Despite all the reassurances that the suits at Disney are going to throw our way this has disaster written all over it.

The idea of releasing a new Star Wars film in August is absurd. Anyone who knows anything about box office returns knows that it is not the time of year to release a film of this magnitude…Besides, have much of a difference would the 12 weeks from Memorial Day to August actually make?

Memo to Disney: Do not rush this film. A six month to one year delay is insignificant in your long term plans for the biggest franchise of all time. I want something worthy of the legendary original trilogy. I’d be happy to wait one year to be sure we avoid the disastrous results of the inferior prequel trilogy…Beyond that it makes good financial sesne in the long run to produce the best film possible that is going to be used to sprinboard this franchise.

I fear that these “new” movies may be worse than the prequels…

Relax people, we are getting bits and peaces her. Remember the words in large, friendly letters on the cover of Hitchhiker`s Guide To the Galaxy:

    DON`T PANIC…

18 months is plenty of time guys so try not to worry too much. They have allready spent 2 years working on this so a lot of the groundwork is done, which means a fast run-in to principal photography at Pinewood in the spring. A delay until 2016 would prove awkward for Harrison Ford anyway as it seems he’ll be busy with Indy 5 by then. Plus he isn’t getting any younger and has a few minor health issues as it is. If he’s signed up for all 3 sequels he’ll be pushing 80 by the time they are done. Also, JJ may have other commitments beyond 2015.

Quality over speed Disney! The only reason I’m not taking torches to Iger’s house is JJ seems onboard. Which makes me think it’s still doable.

I agree…but…JJ will face the same mountain to climb as GL…us the fans! so many people hate on the PT, but visually and story wise it was top notch. Its just not what EVERY fan wanted. so…just as many people will be hating episode 7 in June 2015!

The Empire Strikes Back started filming on March 5th, 1979 and was released on May 21, 1980.

I’m not seeing the problem here.

Given enough man power, they can make a summer 2015 release date. My guess is that Kathleen kennedy is more worried about productions costs, than that of scripting and casting delays.

Also, this news may be old news just now coming out.

Since there are for more movies at least scheduled for annual releases, being able to crank them out very efficiently is a habit Lucasfilm will just have to get used to. Once the growth pains they’re feeling from Episode VII are dealt with, Lucasfilm will know how to better organise and utilise their production methods.

Kennedy is used to big budget movies shot in 6 months or less with Spielberg. So if she’s saying that they need more time… I think she’s not lying.

I think 2016 is more than reasonable. Let them get the script, the casting and the filming out of the way. Then the post production. While the post production is going on they have people working on Ep.VIII and the spin off film. and Ad hoc for Ep XI. Maybe this way we will see a Star Wars film once a year like planned just one year behind schedule, which I am all happy for so long as they are good films.
