Star Wars: Han Solo – Thandie Newton in the Negotiations for Role.
Following her critically-acclaimed performance as Maeve Millay in HBO’s Westworld, actress Thandie Newton is apparently taking an interest in playing a character in the Galaxy Far, Far Away for the currently-untitled Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.
From Variety:
Westworld star Thandie Newton may be headed to a galaxy far, far away. Sources tell Variety the actress is in negotiations to join the upcoming Han Solo spinoff, starring Alden Ehrenreich. Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke co-star in the Disney-Lucasfilm feature, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing.
Also worth mentioning is that Variety recently told us that Phoebe Waller-Bridge may be playing a CGI character – they briefly emphasized in their article that they believe this role may be a droid character instead of an alien character. I have to say, as someone who had been feeling rather “eh” about this particular project (even with Lord and Miller at the helm), the talent that they’ve assembled over the past few months is definitely winning me over. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon if the role that Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz, and Naomi Scott were up for has been filled (fingers crossed for the either of the first two).
Odds are that we should get some casting information before principal photography begins in earnest in March. Currently, a bit of early photography is underway, but given that Donald Glover still has yet to read the script and that Woody Harrelson said that he won’t start filming until late March, it’s not likely that they’re filming anything mind-blowing right now.
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.
Just throwing this out there – we may be getting our live-action Rae Sloane with Thandie Newton. (Pure speculation on my part, nothing that’s been rumored or anything.)

Yeah well watch where you’re throwing things, you might take someones eye out.

Could be, could be

Then I guess Tiffany Smith (The Smith Lord) will not be playing Rae Sloane. She will be crushed.
I hope so. But still, my dream casting for Rae Sloane would be Rutina Wesley.
Wouldn’t that make her younger than she looks?
A bit. Also, cool, a JoJo avatar!

SUNLIGHT YELLOW OVERDRIVE!!!
Sana?
She’s too old to play Sana Starros. I get the feeling that the part of Sana could go to Thompson, Kravitz, or Scott – presuming that Sana is in the movie in the first place.

Who says she’s too old?
Kinda like how 32 year old Felicity Jones played 21 year old Jyn Erso?
Not only that, but we don’t have a clue how old Sana is. We’ve seen her in a few comics. That’s it. Certainly nowhere near enough to be able to judge how old she is. My two cents: shes around the same age or maybe even a little older than Han is.
Thandie is 44 – unlikely she’ll turn out to be Sana, given Han’s just a youngin’ in this, apparently…
She’s about Han’s age in the comics, and given that Han’s in his twenties here… Yeah. Too big a difference to be convincing.

I don’t know, man. I can absolutely see LFL/Disney shooting for some of that sweet, sweet female demographic money by pairing Han up with a smarter, cooler, more sarcastic, more skilled, slightly older woman who is better than Han at literally everything, who he swoons over, and who gets killed to propel him on his way to being the man we know.
I don’t disagree, but I think (in practice) Maz Kanata already fills those shoes….from a certain point of view
20 years isn’t slightly older. It’s older.
I doubt that Lord and Miller would go for a cliche like that.
I would say she’s just under being too-well known but we live in a post-Woody Harrelson casting universe now, man. I think they should stick with theatrically trained unknowns for the most part tbh but these are Disney productions and they are always going to be pushing for star power. Just glad they haven’t pushed any of their tweeners on the series yet.
I also think Star Wars is best served by talented unknowns. Granted, Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing were far, far from unknown, but beyond that I think it’s worked for the property. Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon was a highlight of E1, but it took me out of the film a bit. I can’t see Windu without seeing Sam Jackson. Ever. I’m not sure how Woody will play out in the Solo flick. But I have no idea who Newton is.
I guess they worry that the Han Solo name isn’t enough to pull in the punters. No Ford, No Williams.
I don’t think they need to worry too much about that.
I just don’t get this kind of criticism.
I just don’t care whether an actor or actress was well known before star wars. Thandie and Woody are both actors I appreciate much.
Lando’s main squeeze?
Calling it now, Han’s wife is going to be Lando’s sister, because it’s a small galaxy after all
Oh noooooooooo
“You got a lotta guts comin’ here… after what YOU pulled.”
Good god, PLEASE not that!
I’m afraid it’s going to be that obvious. He, what? Ditches her to win the Falcon so he can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, and save a wookie by shooting first. Not going to put the blame on Lord and Miller if that comes to pass, but I’ve got this horrible feeling Disney and LFL are going to insist on a bunch of this kind of stuff.
The insane amount of fan service in both TFA and RO indicate that you will be correct. There will 10000000% chance of a shooting first joke in the first 20 minutes of the film.
If it makes me laugh, I don’t care. It rather that not happen, though.
Just like they kept the entire cast of Rogue One alive after the suicide run on Scarif to make it a more family friendly experience, right?
Oh wait.
On his honeymoon, Han most definitely shot first… *ZING* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyLWrKh2fB0
if it’s one thing TFA and Rogue One proved, it’s that Star Wars fans are bad at predicting plots.
the force awakens anyway. we’ve known the plot to rogue one for 40 years.
han went after his sister too? he is cold blooded. lol.
That’s a considerable age difference for two people to be married.
Young Han Solo Smuggles a Cougar: A Star Wars Story
the graduate in space? 😉
Amazingly Anne Bancroft was only 6 years older than Dustin Hoffman.
Interesting, though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
lol
HELLS YES. Shes fantastic.
I’ve always thought Thandie Newton was super cute! 😉
Remember when she was in Mission Impossible 2?
Major babe 🙂
THAT’S O B J E C T I F I C A T I O N
Lots of speculation here about Han hooking up with whomever Ms. Newton is being cast as.
She was more or less an anti-hero borderline villain in West World this past Fall and she made a big splash doing so.
Wouldn’t you think that maybe she’s being cast in that role rather than the love interest?
I was so disappointed with Westworld. For me (read as only my opinion :p), nothing works well in that show. The combination of the absurd modern world (overacting, and bad “office” design) with the inconsistent theme west world park with poor stories and no empathy for hosts and guests, was really bad, boring, pretentious and bad executed. Repeat, just my opinion while watching the series. It doesn’t work as a futuristic tale neither a western.
So, at the moment i,m not that enthusiastic about this cast. Hope she will have a good character.
My opinion (repeat, my opinion) is that you didn’t understand half of what was going on, or stopped watching before anything that would clarify the whole thing was revealed.
I’m stupid, but not that all ;P. I understand all of what was going on. Just gave my opinion, man. It’s not that hard to follow this series. Why if i don’t like the series is just i don’t understand it?). I watched all season (sorry, you opinion is wrong 😉 I always give opportunities the series i don’t like the beginning. Jesus. I don’t like the acting (unnatural, and for me a bad casting, nothing to compare with Deadwood, Soprano, Band of Brothers, or Boardwalk Empire, or Breaking Bad, or Luck, or Firefly… to name a few). I love the premise (like the 1973 movie) but for me is bad executed. Again, my opinion. For me the stories and characters are not interesting, the relations don’t work (for me), the dialogs are pretentious, the situations unnatural too, and so foreseeable. For me there is no tension and equilibrium between west world and futuristic world. Just my vision. I have seen a few westerns and a few sci-fi tales and this series don’t give what i like of those worlds. I don’t like the music, the cinematography and “the office”. I think i give my opinion with arguments (trying to do my best with my bad and poor english). I like to give it with respect (not the easy “worst series ever”, or “crap”…) Just don’t like the series the way it is. SOme people like, some people don’t. Giving good reasons it’s a good way to discuss all kind of films, or series, or art in general. Cheers
All right. Got that.
Loved….LOVED the show. I found everything worked damn near flawlessly (I did guess Billy’s identity and the multiple periods, but it wasn’t so obvious that I got irritated with the show) right…up…until the last half of the final episode. Resolving such a fantastic collection of themes and questions with “and then the robots went on a shooting spree” was perhaps the most boring narrative decision they could have made. I also had more respect for the whole thing when I thought they were going to be brave enough to tell the story they wanted and then end the show, rather than dragging it on for another season.
This would be great! She’s awesome!!
All roles would have been finalised months ago, this is just the steady drip of promotion.
OMG R E S H O O T S
Which clearly have no major impact on the….final….movie…dang, wait a second…. 😀
Hey, at least Lucasfilm knows what they’re doing when it comes to reshoots. Rogue One turned out great and the reshoots were probably a part of that. Besides, the general story outline was basically the same in the end.
Yep. We knew the end of the movie before we even knew anything about Rogue One. We knew the Rebels got the plans, it’s just a matter of how.
Regarding the reshoots, I think they said that the ending was actually redone. If that is the case, it made for some of the most beautiful moments in film history per my opinion. As big of a Star Wars fan as I am, my top 5 moments in film (not films themselves mind you) were not even in Star Wars. After Rouge one, the last 5 to 10 minutes of the film became my number one favorite section of film. Pure gold to not be topped in my opinion.
When I say “in the end”, I mean in the final version of the film, although you;re right, the ending was one of the parts of the film that was changed the most, and it ended up being the best part.
Can’t reshoot what hasn’t been filmed in the first place.

According to the Internet, they’ll find a way. H A N S O L O I S DO O M E D
I’m up for Rae Sloane, but I’d rather have Rutina Wesley do it.
