Rumor: Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer: When and Where

After the reveal of the Star Wars: Episode VIII title, the biggest question that all fans have of course is when to expect the first footage from The Last Jedi, the highly anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In the last few weeks, numerous reports on the web claimed to know when the first footage from Rian Johnson’s movie will be revealed. We’ve tried to contact several sources hoping to get some small hints about a possible trailer premiere date.

Rumors have been swirling for a couple weeks that a brand new trailer or TV spot for Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released this Sunday during the Superbowl. As we also shared on Twitter several days ago, a source of ours told us that there will not be any Star Wars footage during that event. We were not the first to hear something about this, even Pablo Hidalgo made a post saying that this Superbowl will be pretty much like the previous ones in terms of Star Wars coverage, meaning no coverage at all. We mainly did this clarification because multiple reports were posted online claiming to have inside information that The Last Jedi will get a TV spot during the Superbowl. This is not going to be the case.

The most logical date for the first footage from The Last Jedi has always been Star Wars Celebration Orlando, which is happening much earlier in the year than last year’s event. Many people are betting that the first The Last Jedi teaser will be screened during the Star Wars fan event.

With this in mind we contacted one of our sources who shared with us an interesting tidbit. According to him, right now they are hard at work on a new Behind the Scenes reel for The Last Jedi, which will be the first footage that we will see from the movie. This means that there will be no teaser trailer before Celebration. All rumors on the web with earlier dates are not accurate, as are the reports with teaser descriptions. While a BTS reel premiering during Celebration is not surprising at all, since they did pretty much the same for The Force Awakens and Rogue One, it is interesting that we will be heading into Celebration without any TLJ footage released before. That is of course if we don’t count the brief start of production video that Lucasfilm released back in February.

So, when can we expect the first The Last Jedi teaser? The following is just a speculation on our part based on the quote above from our source. First, here are all the previous trailers, teasers, and BTS reels released for the previous movies for reference:

TFA Teaser – November 28
TFA Teaser 2 – April 16 (Celebration)
TFA BTS – July 10 (SDCC)
TFA Trailer – October 19

Rogue One Teaser – April 7
Rogue One BTS + Teaser (only for the attendees) – July 15 (Celebration)
Rogue One Full Trailer – August 11
Rogue One Final Trailer – October 13

As you can see from the list above, April has been the month for Star Wars teasers. TFA teaser in November is an understandable exception, since it was the first Star Wars movie we were getting in more than a decade. We have to keep in mind also that for some time now many Hollywood insiders have been hearing that a teaser for The Last Jedi has been in the works since late November 2016. So, knowing the fact from our source that the BTS reel will be the first The Last Jedi footage shown, we speculate that during the same event a new teaser will be shown as well – pretty much what they did with Rogue One. The big difference now is that we don’t have a teaser going into Celebration, like we did for Rogue One. This leads us to speculate that if we get a teaser during Celebration in addition to the BTS reel, it will not be screened only for the fans in the hall, but for everyone.

Although we are confident in the part our source told us, still treat this as rumor for now. It has been demonstrated many times over that plans can change. I always like to give the example that Disney had a plan to attach a Rogue One teaser to The Force Awakens, but decided against it in the last minute. We will all find out the truth soon enough as Star Wars: Celebration is just 69 days away!

Tell us what you think in the comments below. Do you like the idea of getting both a BTS reel and teaser for The Last Jedi together during Celebration rather than an earlier date?

Agreed. And also it makes no sense for Disney to pay so much money for one of those TV spots when they don’t really need the NFL or its ancient TV network lackeys to reach people these days.

I have doubts about this. It’s pretty rare if they show BTS footage before a teaser. A teaser is much more impactful at least for a first 60 second spark.

Just a small correction: The July 10 trailer of TFA was released at Comic-Con not Celebration. Celebration Anaheim happened in April 2015.

    TFA Teaser – November 28
    TFA Teaser 2 – April 16 (Celebration)
    TFA BTS – July 10 (Comic-Con)
    TFA Trailer – October 19

I doubt our first footage will be a BTS reel. I just don’t feel that has the impact as an actual teaser. I think the most likely scenario is a teaser and BTS real at Celebration, but I also feel there’s a slim possibility that we’ll see a teaser released online (or debuted on a Disney owned network show like we saw with Rogue One) shortly after Rogue One is out on video. Or even a “teaser” to the teaser to premier at Celebration.

    Re: Poster w/Rian
I’m not fond of the colour change to *red* for the Star Wars title.

Probably mind it less for the stories films, but would prefer the main movies use the same/original colour scheme.

Get use to it as we get a few movies down the line, year after year, no doubt they will be mixing things up to keep things interesting and probably to help people tell all the movies apart. Not such a bad problem to have, after all… lol (assuming they continue to be good).

I don’t like the new logos as well. It is just ugly. You want a logo? Look at Empire and Jedi, that is the kind of logo I’m looking for

The logos are literally just the Star Wars logo and a subtitle. How could that possibly be ugly?

come on, Tud, do not joke. You know very well that the Star Wars logo is perfect. First – the subtitle is between, not under. THAT looks ugly – to me. Second – Look AGAIN to Empire and Jedi logos and tell me what you see next to the logos of Force Awakens and Last jedi. Can you notice any differency? What do you think? I can just say that – again TO ME, it’s far superior than the new ones. The same way I was dissapointend back in the prequel era, when they didn’t make a REAL new logo. Just episode bla bla bla…..I hoped that in the new era they will see the importance of a logo and make it great again. They didn’t. They didn’t bother to make a new logo. Just the old one with additionals words in between. Probably because of the “Episode” issue. I’m not more impressed because of the red color. I’m happy for those who are so excited with the logo of Last Jedi. I just don’t see anything exciting in it.

So your problem is less that it’s UGLY per se, and more that they put the words in the wrong place and didn’t make a brand spankin’ new logo for each individual film. I guess I can see why you might have a problem with that, if you have a major nostalgia boner for the individual logos that the OT had. I don’t think many people really care all that much about it.

yo. sith red was chosen purposefully. yellow is yellow because on black yellow is easiet to read… the other times it happened were because that first time – george hadnt written an actual screen play capable of both c apturing drama, dialog and details so he worte the easiest part of the story he cobled togther, named it numbered it – but only in his head, and took the only marker he had and used his giant auteur brain to birth the adventure in expository detail dumping we lovingly call – the crawl. 1 to be read, 100s for luck, and finally one in red – because Rian is a closer and yellow is for pee trumps teeth

I’m going to sit back and enjoy the ride. Having said that, I was severely disappointed in the decision last year to show the BTS Rogue One footage at Celebration to everyone, but not the Teaser Trailer with Darth Vader’s first reveal. With all due respect to the many arguments I’ve heard about people paying a lot of money should get something extra, I disagree that this brings the fan community closer together. I distinctly remember Celebration last year and the lack of people engaging on the forums here. The entire world should’ve gotten to rejoice in the return of Vader together and I still to this day feel it was a missed opportunity for Star Wars and Star Wars fans.

Disney has two spots during the Super Bowl, but they’re heavily tipped to be Guardians 2 and Pirates 5.

That a new Pirates 5 trailer was recently rated and the fact that Disney usually places Marvel previews at the game, would bear those tips out.

Disney understands its Jewels best and Disney is very concerned how BB is going to be recieved. Yes it will make American dollars, No – its not an acheivemment and Hermione is pretty but oh boy – what do we do when the script has both singing and facial expressions that evoke more than breathy porny stupid female i dont know face…

Its clear that Emma was heavily auto tuned, and while it certainly lives in the same magical world as the original – its a bit “Shelley Duvals HBO Fairy Tail Theater” and everyone knows the only watchable one of those is the one where Liza Minelli is the Princess in the Princess in he Pea story… Liza. The 80s. She Just cant Get Sleep…. Must be the mattress. The 80s… im telling you nerds. America is over. 1984 was the absolute Zenith of the American Experiment… the rest… Cheato … its all self aware and derivative… Like what Disney does to thier own IP when they double dip… or is it double penetrate. See I think Liza would dig the DP – you know it hurts at first – but after your really spun.. it starts to feel powerful. And shes a lady that likes a good time. ya know ?

at any rate – they made that mistake with Into the Woods last year. Theyre not going to muddy the reveal with another one of their jewels shine and lustre. Also two diff. demographics… Star Wars – all the people Beauty – middle school, thier admirers and benefactors, a bunch of gays and old fat white men

      different animals.

everybody. its a movie. Star Wars … Beauty is a Musical. And since they seem to have been more inspired by the ice show theme park Broadway Musical then ya know – the Oscar nominated cartoon. Except – the singing. Cant have pretty brown haired females singing on film with a musical voice… it would be distracting ! This tart was also gonna be in La La Land before she was reassigned… perhaps it has something to do with theyre being a gabillion of her in every city in America and without her magical smarts shes just another brown haired invisible person that surely mattered… just not to anyone but her.

Moving on – I know some of your childhoods were wretched – they must have have been – but look how little youve done to make lemonade out of it… obsessing about a terrible childhood, indulging and infantilizing nursery rymhes and fantasical fairtale cartoons that can come to life with wizard girls that *oops* forgot all the magic they knew in college except this auto tune devilry… and whats worse your daydreams ? They come with tiny little “coming soon” movies about space religions and stuff…

Dont make your adult life horrible too. Not everybody can be pretty and the world needs more ditch diggers then just about anything else… so you can be useful. yet.

Thats the best any body can do.

U believe in you. Im a busy person… i had the time to type this and i promise – but I believe in Me ! No one cares about a ditch digger friend.

Cool. Totally fine with this. Besides…it’s Star Wars. The name alone is all the promotion it needs – it does not require the viewership of a Super Bowl to reach it’s intended audience. Also, this should come as no surprise whatsoever ever to anyone who pays any attention at all to entertainment news, as Kathy Kennedy has already stated some months back that any sort of trailer for VIII won’t arrive until the spring…and we’ve a ways to go until that happens.

The Super Bowl is a Trillion Dollar Event in our Economy but its not a singular thing. If every player were to get explosive diarhea half way through the 3rd Quater and the smell was so terrible Lady GaGa vomited blood – only then would it bec ome interesting. The Falcons are a lot of criminals and dog fighting folks who while not hanging dogs from trees these days… certainly arent going to beat the Partiots. I mean – they cheat. DOgs dont cheat. Its win or swing.

Star Wars must last 100 years in our consceince, must cost no more than 1/3 of a billion dollars and must make no less than 2 billion dollars in 4-6 months and it needs to be exciting, surprising and filled with secrets new and old that millions and millsions of strangers have spent time and energy ruminating on…

One is Diamond and one is styrofoam. America do Styfoam Only these days…

FUck this country and all you fat fuckers zombieing around…

Anyway – Lucasfilm is being run better than it ever has been or was dreamed to be able to be run – No one gives a shit about the Super Bowl.

Lucasfilm 10 years ago was a glorifed video gaming company with a solid start in film and associates degree in space dialog… Theres always been a story, theres always been fans… and Lucas synthesized – a ditched Boba Fett video game with cut scenes that were too long and a cartoon series thats unwatchable in order -?

My point. Kathleen is on it. The woman is the most powerful person in film and id argue – all of business. GM Mary is a Cheato Hack. But I digress – Shes gonna put it right where its supposed to be… and that new face of hers makes 60ish look 40 and shes got the funds to freeze it Disney style if things go south someday…

And she hates her exhusband just enough so that she can still wring one more dollar out of the old jew when things get Indy style next year… This time though Lucas touches nothing. The man is ridiculous hack… refrigarator, aliens and shia labeouf… Hes like Midas only its poo not gold.

wahh but hes the creator, he dreamed up my childhood… save it nerd, the man stole every story, paid for the religion in a college c ourse he barely understood and wrote a terrible draft of that idea and shot a movie around it. Its garrrrbage… but its gold. So what next ? He became rich enough to buy Kasdan and Irvin so he could do the dreaming ?

Hes a hack the world is not fair and the super bowl is terrible way to die infront of your family and the television audience because some person needs to blow you up but also maximize the effort. so enjoy.

They’ll debut a teaser before they show us any BTS footage. It’ll prolly be a quick minute + one I imagine. Just enough to excite us like they did Nov of 2014 for TFA

I actually liked the Disney Star Wars trailer music better than the majority of the tracks on the actual soundtracks. I wonder who does those and if they’ll ever release them?

Honestly I hope they do release on at all. The amount of buzz these movies get just by releasing a title, they do not need a trailer

Can’t wait for this. The story Rian scripted for VIII based on what we got in VII is my biggest hope. TFA was alright. Rogue One was lame for me only in the sense that it got the fan service version of star wars right but it got the star wars version of star wars wrong. I mean in Hoth it made sense to include the walkers because the Empire was aiming to take out a large structure shielding the base and the rebels had field artillery… in Rogue One the Empire realizes there are a bunch of people on foot on the home planet of their base on a planet that is still completely shielded so they decide to bust out walkers and shoot like mad in completely disregarding the fact that they may very well end up damaging their own base more than the rebels? Or did the bust them out because “yeah that’s badass! that’s star wars! yeah!”

Either way. I know fan service factory made movies are what we’re going to be getting every. frigging. year. until we die from star wars which is ashame… but with the slate we’ve been presented so far TLJ is the only movie with the few people attached that give me hope that we’ll get a film that doesn’t feel like it comes directly from the Mouse’s fan service mandates.

    but that’s just MY opinion.

If Rogue One is fan service, TFA is “casual fan” service. It was the most shallow, empty, devoid of substance Star Wars film ever made.

The walkers in Rogue One were not the same, they were cargo haulers, the ones on Hoth were troop transports. You’re anger is your weakness. 😉

I could never be angry at Star Wars. But the type of walker doesn’t make up for the use of walkerS. There’s no tactical or strategic reason to use everytyhing you have for a handful of people trapped on a planet you own where the base with all of your government’s records are held which (in the Empire’s case) would house a large amount of soldiers. Even if the Empire won and I were Vader or Palpatine, I’d still drop a Force Choke on Krennic for being so ham-handed and wasting unnecessasry resources while putting all of our own things at risk. It’s basically like dropping every US War Movie Stereotype into a film about 25 people raiding a US base on our home territory. I don’t think we’d bust out tanks, bombs, and the works. I just felt Empire had a logical reason for the walkers being used while Rogue One’s reason was “because its badass” But I guess that’s why Empire is not only one of the best sequels but one of the best movies ever. Where is our episode 8 teaser : _ ^ )

Is timing really an issue for the first trailer ?
Or is it just not ready yet ?

Disney could just drop the trailer on some random Tuesday and who would really think poorly of it ?

Bob Eiger already saw a cut of the movie, so I would guess it’s ready to show.

So why wait to release a trailer ?

I think it makes more sense to release a teaser early (like now), some footage at Celebration and then the first full trailer with Spider-Man or Guardians.
